A ping or traceroute can add context, but neither proves a route fault or identifies a responsible hop. Google may serve YouTube content through a local cache or other Google network locations, and says it does not use ICMP ping latency to choose a serving location.
What the VPS location does—and does not—tell you
A Singapore VPS does not guarantee that a particular YouTube video is delivered from a nearby Singapore server, or that its traffic follows a short route. Google describes several possible delivery paths: content may come from a local Google Global Cache (GGC), or from Google core locations reached through peering or transit. Less popular content that is not cached may follow a different path. The serving location can depend on application performance, legal requirements, demand, capacity, maintenance, and DNS resolver configuration. Google explicitly says it does not use ICMP ping latency to select that location. Google’s Content Served documentation describes this general model; it does not establish the route for your VPS or video.

Google’s network model also involves connections with local internet providers: Google exchanges traffic with providers at peering points, and those providers carry it toward the end user. Performance may therefore involve Google’s network as well as the VPS provider and its upstream route. Without the VPS provider, destination address, and measurements, no particular route or cause can be identified.

- Choose a repeatable playback test. Note the video URL, playback quality, and the exact UTC time. Use the same video and quality on the VPS and on an independent connection, such as your regular broadband or mobile data. Run the comparisons close together in time so changing conditions are less likely to confuse the result.
- Record what the player does. While the VPS is buffering, note the selected quality, the player’s connection speed or throughput if available, and whether the buffer drains, stalls, or repeatedly refills. YouTube’s general buffering guidance recommends trying a different internet connection and adjusting playback quality. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers broader playback checks.
- Repeat during a good period. If playback later works, collect the same observations again. A bad-versus-good comparison can show whether the symptom tracks a change in end-to-end playback performance; one isolated measurement cannot.
If the independent connection plays normally while the VPS stalls, that makes the VPS’s path a useful focus for further diagnosis. It does not prove whether the cause lies inside the provider network, an upstream network, Google’s delivery path, or another factor.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Identify the destination before tracing a route
- Resolve the relevant YouTube or video hostnames from the VPS. Record the hostname, returned IP addresses, resolver used, and timestamp. DNS results can vary; keep each result with the playback period it came from.
- Observe routes to the actual destination. Repeat ping or traceroute observations to the destination address during both buffering and good playback, where possible. Include the complete command output and timestamps. A trace to
youtube.comis not necessarily a trace to the host delivering the video chunks. - Compare address families only when relevant. If the VPS is using both IPv4 and IPv6 for the tested destination, collect observations for each and note which family the playback connection uses if you can establish it. Do not treat an unused address family as evidence about the active stream.
Ping and traceroute do not measure DNS resolution speed. Google describes these tools as ways to help locate delays or confirm reachability, not as measurements of DNS performance or video delivery. Google Public DNS troubleshooting guidance explains that ICMP may be rate-limited or deprioritized.
Interpret the results without overdiagnosing
- An unanswered intermediate hop is not proof of packet loss. Routers may deprioritize or limit ICMP replies while forwarding normal traffic. A hop that does not answer can still pass the video traffic.
- One high ping or long trace is not proof of bad peering. ICMP behavior is not the same as the application’s video-delivery performance, and Google says ICMP ping latency does not determine its serving-location choice.
- Look for repeatable correlation. The most useful evidence is a recurring relationship between buffering and degraded player throughput or buffer behavior, alongside route observations from the same periods. Route output supports the picture; by itself, it does not prove which segment is responsible.
- Do not assume DNS changes will fix it. Google lists resolver configuration among factors in serving-location selection, but that does not establish that changing resolvers improves this particular case.
What to send the VPS provider or YouTube
If the issue appears limited to the VPS
Send the VPS provider a concise evidence bundle and ask them to inspect the VPS’s upstream path for congestion or loss during the reported windows. The provider controls the VPS’s network connectivity, so it is the appropriate party to investigate that portion of the path; your measurements may help them narrow it down.

If YouTube playback is affected more broadly
Use YouTube’s in-product feedback or support path and include the playback observations and relevant diagnostics. Google’s reporting guidance says to route issues with Google properties through the relevant support path and include diagnostics: Google support.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the reason you use the VPS is to keep an uploaded-video YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
