YouTube background play on Android used to be one of the most complained-about friction points—so people built workarounds to keep audio going while the screen turned off or the app moved to the background. Over the last year, those methods have been increasingly unreliable or blocked.

Why the old workarounds broke
YouTube’s restrictions don’t come from Android alone—they come from how the YouTube app decides when to pause. Several changes over time have reduced the effectiveness of the common “free background” tricks.
1) Stricter background and audio focus rules inside the YouTube app
Android relies on audio focus to decide which app can play sound while others are active. When YouTube loses focus—or when it believes it’s no longer “allowed” to keep playing—it pauses. Many older workarounds couldn’t keep audio focus long enough to survive.
2) PiP behavior changes
PiP is supported on Android (Android 8.0+). But PiP availability and behavior can be limited by the app. When YouTube updates, it may disable PiP for certain playback states, switch the UI so PiP never triggers, or stop audio continuation when you exit the player.

Working alternatives that don’t require Premium
There are still a few paths that can provide continued playback behavior without relying on fragile third-party tricks. They’re not perfect, but they’re the most stable “free-ish” options you can use.
Android
On Android, your best non-Premium options are PiP (when YouTube allows it) and settings that prevent Android from aggressively restricting the app.
- Open YouTube and start a video.
- Look for the Picture in picture / PiP control (often accessible from the player UI).
- Press Home while PiP is active; test whether audio continues.
- On your phone, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Battery.
- Set YouTube to Unrestricted (wording varies by brand) or disable Battery optimization for it.
- If your phone has App background activity or Restricted apps, move YouTube to Allowed.
- Retry after rebooting once to clear stale audio focus state.
iOS
If you’re willing to switch devices, iPhone and iPad can behave differently for media playback, but YouTube’s official background rules still generally favor Premium.

On desktop, background play depends on the browser and site player behavior rather than Android’s audio focus rules.

Verify PiP support on your phone
Some Android skins hide PiP toggles. Make sure PiP is enabled at the OS level.
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Search for Picture-in-picture or PiP.
- Enable Allow picture-in-picture (wording varies).
- Ensure YouTube is allowed under PiP app permissions, if the toggle exists.
Disable aggressive battery restrictions

Step 4: Temporarily disable Battery Saver / Power saving
Power-saving modes frequently throttle background audio and background services. If you’re testing, turn it off for the trial.
Step 5: Remove “Restricted” background permissions
