For a 1080p60 gaming video sent to YouTube as a live rerun, use the live-ingest settings: 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Set rate control to CBR and keyframes to every two seconds, never more than four. These are live-stream recommendations—not the separate 12 Mbps recommendation for a regular 1080p high-frame-rate SDR upload.
Recommended settings for a 1080p60 rerun
YouTube does not publish a special bitrate profile for a “rerun.” If you send prerecorded gameplay through an encoder as a YouTube Live broadcast, treat it as a live signal and use YouTube’s live encoder recommendations. That is an operational interpretation of YouTube’s separate guidance for live ingest and normal video uploads.

These are YouTube Help recommendations checked on October 3, 2026; they are not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection will sustain the target. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. Test the complete signal and monitor stream health rather than relying on a connection’s advertised peak speed.
Choose the bitrate by codec and workflow
If you are streaming with H.264
Set the video bitrate to 17 Mbps for YouTube’s recommended 1080p60 live ingest target. YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum in its current table. The minimum is not the recommended target; use it only when constraints prevent reaching the recommendation, and check the resulting stream health and picture quality.

If you are streaming with AV1 or H.265
YouTube lists 12 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum for 1080p60 in its AV1/H.265 column. Use these figures only if your encoder supports the selected codec and your YouTube ingest setup accepts it. YouTube’s published table does not establish that one of these codecs will look universally better for every game or encoding setup.
If you are uploading a finished VOD instead
A regular SDR upload is not live ingest. YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate SDR uploads. That upload recommendation should not replace the 17 Mbps H.264 or 12 Mbps AV1/H.265 live targets when you are rebroadcasting the recording through YouTube Live.

Set up and test the live signal
- Choose the encoder and codec. Select H.264, AV1, or H.265 only if your encoder and YouTube setup support it; use the corresponding bitrate recommendation above.
- Configure the output. Set 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Keep the keyframe interval at or below four seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709.
- Set audio. Use AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
- Connect to YouTube Live. Use RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS for encrypted transport. Keep your stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a signal to your channel.
- Test before going live. Include audio and gameplay movement similar to the planned rerun. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check upload capacity and stream health while the test is running.
If you have streamed before, YouTube Live Control Room can reuse prior stream settings, including metadata, settings, and the stream key. You can change settings for the new stream. YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream; neither reused settings nor DVR creates a separate bitrate profile for prerecorded reruns.

Plan for the replay archive
YouTube may automatically archive a live stream that lasts less than 12 hours. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the complete rerun matters, keep the broadcast below that threshold and make a local recording as a backup. The 12-hour caveat is about the YouTube archive, not a promise that every shorter stream will be captured without issue.

Local recording storage needs depend on recording settings and duration. An external SSD can be one option for keeping a local stream recording, but YouTube does not require or endorse a particular drive.
Common bitrate and rerun problems
- Video looks blocky during fast gameplay: Confirm you are using the live recommendation for your codec, not the lower upload figure by mistake. Check the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, and stream-health indicators.
- Connection cannot sustain the target bitrate: Run a test while the stream is active and check stable upload capacity, not just the connection’s advertised peak. A bitrate target does not compensate for an unstable connection.
- Keyframe or rate-control warning: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: Verify the selected audio codec and stereo settings, then test with sound and motion before the public rerun.
- Replay is incomplete or missing after a long broadcast: A stream over 12 hours may not be archived. Use a local recording and plan around the archive limit.
- A finished upload is being encoded like a live feed: Use YouTube’s upload recommendation for a normal SDR VOD; use live-ingest recommendations only when the recording is being sent as a live broadcast.
