A long pause around a YouTube gaming replay does not identify one cause. First work out whether the pause is inside one archived livestream, between two separate VODs, or happens while seeking backward in a stream that is still live. Those are different playback situations, and YouTube’s guidance does not document a standard “delay between VOD segments.”
First identify where the delay occurs
- Inside one archived replay: The recording is already published, and playback stalls or jumps at a point within that video.
- Between separate VOD entries: One livestream replay ends and another begins later in the channel’s video list. That is a gap between uploads, not necessarily a pause within a single replay.
- While rewinding a live stream: You are watching the broadcast as it happens and using pause or seek controls to go back. This is a live DVR issue, not an archived-VOD gap.
Note the affected video, approximate timestamp, device, app or browser, and whether the stream was live or archived. That information helps distinguish a playback problem from an archive or DVR limitation.
Check whether the problem follows your device or connection
If you are a viewer, compare the same point in the replay on another supported device and, if practical, another internet connection. Try the YouTube app or youtube.com as appropriate. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends clearing the YouTube app cache and restarting or updating the device. These checks can help isolate an app, device, or network issue; they do not guarantee a fix for a particular replay.
- Open the replay and record the timestamp where the pause occurs.
- Test that timestamp on a different device or in the other available viewing method: the YouTube app or youtube.com.
- Switch networks if possible. If the issue appears only on one connection, investigate that connection; if it follows the replay across devices and networks, the cause may not be local to your setup.
- On a device using the YouTube app, clear the app cache, then restart or update the device and test again.

If the delay happens while a stream is still live
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between a camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. That is a live capture-to-viewer delay; it is not the same as a pause inside an already published replay. YouTube explains that lower live latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can mean more buffering, while network congestion can delay a stream even when a connection can sustain its average bitrate. YouTube’s latency guidance describes typical latency as under 10 seconds for most viewers on low-latency streams and under 5 seconds for most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams; the accessed guidance does not state a publication year for those figures.
Latency options are creator-side settings intended to balance interaction and buffering during a live broadcast. They are not an established remedy for a gap in an archived VOD. For background on those options, see Understand live streaming latency.

When you are rewinding with DVR
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. Its capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions have lower limits. If DVR is disabled, you cannot seek backward while the stream is live, though a recording may become available afterward. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance before treating a live seek limitation as a VOD defect.
If the pause is in an archived livestream
Ask the creator whether the stream was under or over 12 hours and whether a local recording exists. YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends that creators keep a local archive backup. These limits concern whether an archive is captured; they do not establish a normal processing time or explain a pause between parts of a replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

For a creator, compare the YouTube replay with the local recording around the reported timestamp. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking that a local archive file is growing, verifying the file’s integrity, checking that the event is accessible through channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. - If the local file also has the gap: The issue is present in that recording too; inspect the source file and recording setup rather than assuming YouTube playback caused it.
- If the local file plays continuously but the YouTube replay does not: You have narrowed the difference to the uploaded replay or its playback path, but that comparison alone does not reveal the cause.
- If no local archive exists: You may not be able to make a direct recording-to-replay comparison. For future broadcasts, YouTube recommends keeping a local backup.
Do not confuse HLS segments with VOD gaps
YouTube’s HLS ingest documentation says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. It sets HLS segment duration between 1 and 4 seconds, with shorter segments resulting in lower latency. That describes live ingest and latency, not a documented cause of a long pause between portions of an archived gaming replay. The title alone does not establish that the creator used HLS. What the checks can—and cannot—tell you
If the symptom reproduces across devices and connections at the same point, local troubleshooting has not identified a device- or network-specific cause. If only one device or connection shows it, that comparison helps narrow the investigation. For creators, a local archive comparison can show whether the recording itself contains the gap. None of these observations by itself proves that latency settings, HLS, archive processing, or a particular network condition caused the delay.
YouTube’s official guidance covers live latency, DVR, archive capture, HLS ingest, and viewer troubleshooting, but does not specify a standard duration for archive availability or a general “delay between VOD segments.” The actual cause depends on where the pause occurs, which replay is affected, and whether it reproduces across devices or networks.
