What changed: the YouTube for Android TV account switcher at startup
Recent YouTube for Android TV builds may show a Google account chooser when the app starts, rather than going straight into your last signed-in session. The switcher typically lists the Google accounts available on the device and lets you select which one YouTube should use.
Even if you’ve been using the same account for months, any of the following can trigger the switcher behavior: adding/removing a Google account on the TV, updating apps, clearing YouTube data, or changes in Google sign-in state.

Why you’re seeing it (common causes)
The account switcher is usually a symptom of YouTube not being able to confidently reuse a previously active sign-in session. Here are the most common causes on Android TV / Google TV devices.
- Multiple Google accounts on the device: If your TV has 2+ Google accounts configured, YouTube may ask you to choose which one to use.
- Sign-in session reset: Clearing cache/data, reinstalling the YouTube app, or an app update can wipe the “active” session state.
- Conflicting Google Play services state: Stale sign-in tokens or pending updates in Google Play services can cause YouTube to re-evaluate accounts at launch.
- Device-level profile changes: In some households, switching Android TV user profiles or family settings can lead to different account availability.
- Network or time issues: Incorrect device time can break secure token validation and force sign-in re-selection.
What you can control: account, sign-in state, and defaults
On Android TV / Google TV, YouTube generally relies on the Google accounts configured on the device. Your two main levers are:
- Which accounts exist on the TV (and how many)
- Which account YouTube uses at app launch (via choosing from the switcher or resetting app state)
If you only want one person to use YouTube, the cleanest solution is to remove other Google accounts from the TV. If you want multiple people, you’ll likely keep seeing the switcher—unless YouTube can lock onto the last used session reliably on your build.

Update first: confirm you’re on the latest YouTube build
Before changing anything, make sure you’re running a current YouTube version. Updates sometimes fix startup sign-in behavior or reduce unnecessary prompts.
- On your Android TV / Google TV home screen, open Google Play Store.
- Search for YouTube.
- Select YouTube and check whether an Update button appears.
- If there’s an update, install it, then restart the TV and launch YouTube again.
Method 1: Pick the right account during the switcher prompt
When the chooser appears, it’s doing real work: it maps YouTube’s signed-in identity to one of the accounts currently available on the device. If you pick the “correct” account, the prompt may stop because YouTube can resume that session.
- Launch YouTube.
- On the account switcher screen, use your remote to highlight the account you want.
- Select that account and wait for YouTube to finish loading.
- Close YouTube fully (press Back until it exits, or use the app switcher) and reopen it to confirm behavior.
If it still switches accounts every time, move to the device-account or app-reset methods below.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Method 2: Remove extra Google accounts from your Android TV / Google TV device
This is the most reliable fix for households that don’t need multiple accounts on the TV. Fewer accounts configured = fewer reasons for an account chooser at startup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- From the Android TV / Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Go to Accounts.
- Select the account you don’t want on the TV.
- Choose Remove account (or Remove), then confirm.
- Restart the TV.
- Open YouTube and check whether the account switcher still appears.
Gotcha: Removing accounts also affects other apps that rely on that Google identity (for example, Google Photos, Play Store purchases, and YouTube Music recommendations).
Method 3: Clear YouTube app data to reset sign-in (works when prompts won’t stop)
If the switcher appears because the YouTube sign-in session is in a broken state, clearing app data forces YouTube to re-authenticate cleanly. This often stops repeated prompts caused by stale tokens.
- Open Settings on the TV.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select YouTube.
- Choose Storage.
- Select Clear data.
- When prompted, confirm.
- Open YouTube again and sign in with the account you want.
What you lose: Clearing data resets the app’s local state. You may need to re-enter preferences like autoplay, quality defaults, and watch history-specific behavior.
Method 4: Fix Google sign-in conflicts (credentials and caches)
Sometimes the issue isn’t YouTube itself—it’s the supporting Google components. If YouTube is repeatedly unable to validate a session, you can clear targeted caches rather than wiping everything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings > Apps.
- Search and select Google Play services.
- Go to Storage.
- Select Clear cache.
- Return to Apps and open Google (or Google app).
- Select Storage > Clear cache.
- Restart the TV and open YouTube.
If clearing caches doesn’t help, you can repeat the process but avoid Clear data for Google components unless you’re comfortable re-signing in.

- Multiple Connection Options: Bluetooth 5.4 technology and the TV box’s two built-in USB ports let you easily connect your phone, speakers, keyboard, and other peripherals
Method 5: If you manage YouTube via a family setup, align profiles and memberships
Family sharing and household devices can create multiple active identities. Even if two people use the same physical TV, they might sign into different accounts for subscriptions, Premium, or Kids profiles.
To reduce unwanted prompting:
- Use a single “main” Google account for the living-room TV if you want a consistent startup experience.
- If you need separate accounts, accept that account selection may be required after sign-in resets (for example, after app updates or data clears).
- Verify whether the kids or supervised profiles are being handled by separate apps or separate Google accounts.
Troubleshooting guide: what to try when it still won’t behave
If the switcher keeps showing up even after updating and selecting the correct account, work through these checks in order.
1) Confirm device date/time is correct
Incorrect time can break token validation and make sign-in sessions look invalid.
Recommended Free Tools
- Go to Settings > System > Date & time.
- Enable Set automatically.
- Restart the TV and open YouTube.
2) Restart the TV (not just the app)
A full reboot clears in-memory state and can fix stuck sign-in behavior after updates.
- Hold Power on your remote.
- Select Restart.
- Wait for the TV to fully boot and then open YouTube.
3) Re-clear YouTube data only if needed
If the prompt returns immediately after you sign in again, clearing YouTube data again can help when the previous auth flow is incomplete.
- Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage
- Select Clear data
- Open YouTube and sign in
4) Remove and re-add the same account (last resort)
If you have one desired account but the device sign-in state is corrupted, removing and re-adding it can rebuild valid credentials.

Comparison: account switcher vs. general login prompts
These behaviors are related but not identical:
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first fix |
|---|---|---|
| Account switcher lists multiple Google accounts | Multiple accounts configured or YouTube can’t reuse one session | Remove extra accounts or pick the correct account, then restart |
| You’re asked to sign in every time but no chooser is shown | Broken sign-in tokens or time mismatch | Fix date/time and clear YouTube data |
| Account switcher appears only after updates | New app version reset local auth state | Update everything, then sign in again and reboot |
FAQs
Will clearing YouTube data remove my subscriptions?
Subscriptions and watch history are account-based. Clearing YouTube data resets local app state, but your subscriptions should reappear once you sign in again with the same Google account.
Can I force YouTube to always use one account without the switcher?
On many Android TV / Google TV setups, the switcher is triggered by multiple configured accounts or an unusable session. The most dependable way is to remove other accounts from the TV or ensure YouTube can persist the last selected account by not repeatedly clearing data.
Does this happen on all Android TV brands and models?
It can. The behavior depends on the YouTube app build and your device’s Google account configuration rather than the TV brand alone. Any device running Android TV / Google TV with multiple accounts can be affected.
What if I see the switcher but my preferred account isn’t listed?
That means the account may not be configured on the device. Go to Settings > Accounts and confirm the account exists; if needed, add it, then reopen YouTube.

YouTube for Android TV showing an account switcher at startup is usually caused by YouTube not being able to reuse a previous session—most commonly because multiple Google accounts are present on the TV or the app’s auth state was reset by an update or data clear.
If you want a consistent startup experience, remove extra Google accounts from the TV or keep YouTube’s local sign-in state intact. If the prompt persists, clear YouTube data and check date/time and Play services cache as the next best fixes.
