YouTube Encoder Settings for a Stable 24/7 Pre-Recorded Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a stable 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube Live stream, set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a 2-second keyframe interval, and choose a codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Test with representative audio and motion before launch, then monitor stream health. These settings reduce avoidable problems, but no configuration guarantees an uninterrupted 24-hour connection.

Choose settings that match the video and connection

Use YouTube’s live ingest recommendations rather than settings intended for uploading a finished video. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video ingest bitrates, not a guarantee of picture quality or a measurement of what your particular connection can sustain. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table before launch for the full table and any updates.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 H.265/HEVC or AV1
1080p, 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations for the listed codec, resolution and frame rate. They are not minimum connection speeds or a promise that an encoder, source file or network will deliver a stable stream. If the upload path cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the stream’s resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again. Do not set the encoder to a bitrate simply because that is the source file’s upload bitrate.

Video encoding

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says keyframes should be sent every 2 seconds and specifies a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
  • Codec and transport: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Prefer RTMPS for encrypted transport.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Match the frame rate to the content and the connection; do not choose 60 fps unless it serves the source and can be sustained.

For SDR, YouTube’s advanced recommendations include progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. Encoder labels can vary by software, so check its documentation for the equivalent controls rather than assuming every encoder exposes the same names. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Audio encoding

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommendations specify 128 Kbps for stereo at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. For 5.1-channel audio, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Confirm that the chosen encoder and source audio use compatible settings, and listen to the preview before starting the public stream.

Configure the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream’s settings and use the stream URL and stream key shown there in your encoder. YouTube describes a stream key as a password-like credential that routes the encoder’s feed and lets YouTube accept it.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot or share it with anyone who does not need access. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  3. Set the video and audio options. Select the codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings appropriate to the source and upload path. YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default; use manual selection with a custom stream key only when your workflow requires it.
  4. Choose a latency setting for the audience, not as a stability fix. Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube cautions that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. For a pre-recorded stream without audience interaction, lower latency is less important than a reliable viewing experience. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Check that video and audio arrive as expected before making the stream public or starting its scheduled broadcast.

Test and operate a continuous stream

A setting that works on a short clip may not hold up under the actual source material or operating conditions. Test before launch with content that has similar movement and audio to the planned stream. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live; its live streaming tips also recommend allowing time to prepare. For an encoder event, YouTube says to set up at least two hours ahead and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and read stream-health messages; do not treat a successful preview as proof that the connection will remain stable indefinitely.
  • Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast. Monitoring helps identify problems; it does not eliminate outages.
  • If YouTube reports ingest or encoding errors, use its live streaming error messages guidance to match the error to the setting or signal that needs attention.
  • Do not assume there is a universal restart or reconnect schedule for 24/7 streaming. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe one.

If you configure a backup encoder

A backup is useful only if it is configured and tested. YouTube says primary and backup streams should match in important settings, including resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency and audio settings. Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. A failover setup is not proven merely because a second encoder is available; the switch must be checked in practice. See YouTube’s streaming tips and error guidance.

Protect the recording separately from the live stream

Do not rely on YouTube to keep an archive of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Keep a local archive if the recording matters, and check that the archive file is growing during the broadcast. Archive reliability and live-stream continuity are separate concerns: a stream can remain live while its recording fails, or an archive can be saved even if the broadcast has an interruption. See YouTube’s archive guidance and live streaming tips.

Check rights and YouTube’s live-stream rules

Encoder settings cannot make unauthorized material eligible to stream. Before using pre-recorded video, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music and other included material, and that the stream complies with YouTube’s policies. Copyright claims or other policy enforcement can interrupt or restrict a live stream regardless of bitrate, codec or keyframe settings. Keep evidence of licenses or permissions for material you did not create.

Likewise, technical availability does not guarantee that a channel or its videos meet YouTube’s monetization requirements. Reused-content review is separate from encoder configuration; make sure the channel adds the original value required by YouTube’s policies rather than assuming that looping content or keeping a stream live satisfies them.

Ways to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running

There are two broad approaches: operate an encoder yourself or use a service designed to run uploaded videos as a continuous stream. YouTube’s encoder guide lists local encoder options and Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streaming; it does not provide a neutral price or reliability comparison for those options. For the listed equipment and tool context, see YouTube’s encoder guide.

  1. StreamNeo — first option to try for a hands-off continuous stream. It runs uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
  2. Operate your own encoder. Configure and run an encoder on a computer or standalone device, maintain the upload connection and power, monitor the stream, and arrange your own recovery and archive workflow.
  3. Consider another cloud tool. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. The listing establishes that use case, but does not establish its current price, performance guarantees or terms.
  4. Consider standalone hardware. YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and describes optional PlayToStream support for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. The guide also describes recording to SD cards, USB storage or network locations. This is an optional equipment route, not a requirement for a stable stream; confirm current availability and features before buying.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can YouTube guarantee that these settings will keep a stream live for 24 hours?

No. The recommended settings and operating practices can reduce avoidable problems, but YouTube does not promise a 24-hour connection for any specific encoder configuration.

Does a bitrate recommendation mean my upload speed only needs to equal that number?

No. The bitrate is an ingest recommendation for a particular codec, resolution and frame rate; test whether your actual upload path can sustain the selected stream.
