“No data” means YouTube is not currently receiving a usable feed from OBS; it does not identify the cause on its own. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s status message and preview first, then verify OBS’s YouTube server URL and current stream key, inspect OBS’s local audio and video output, and test the outbound connection if that output looks healthy.
What “no data” tells you—and what it doesn’t
OBS can appear to be streaming without YouTube having accepted its feed. YouTube expects the encoder to send data to the server URL using the stream key for the intended broadcast. Until Live Control Room receives a usable feed, a running OBS interface alone is not confirmation that the stream reached YouTube.
The symptom could involve the destination or key, OBS’s audio/video output or encoder, a format YouTube cannot accept, or the outbound internet connection. More than one issue can coexist. Use YouTube’s displayed status or error to choose what to investigate rather than changing unrelated settings.
Diagnose the problem in this order
-
Read Live Control Room’s status and check for a preview
Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the stream status or health message and whether a preview appears. YouTube says status messages can provide specific errors and instructions; the preview is a practical indication that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. Record the exact error text and when it appeared before changing settings.

Verify OBS’s destination and stream key
In OBS, open Settings > Stream and check that the service and server correspond to the intended YouTube stream. If OBS is configured to enter a server URL and key manually, compare both with the details for that broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” A key for a different broadcast, an outdated key, or the wrong destination can prevent YouTube from receiving the expected feed. Do not share the key publicly.
If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its troubleshooting guidance advises obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Change the key only when the error or setup warrants it, then try connecting again.

Check OBS’s own picture, sound, and encoder status
Confirm that the intended video and audio sources are active and that OBS’s local output contains the picture and sound you expect. Look for encoder errors and check CPU load, especially if the output is missing, stuttering, or otherwise faulty. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, software version, errors, and CPU load; none of those observations alone proves that a particular one caused “no data.” Its live-stream troubleshooting guide describes these checks.

Follow any specific YouTube ingest error
If Live Control Room names an error, use that message to guide the fix. YouTube’s live streaming error messages page covers problems including missing or multiple audio or video streams, incorrect format, keyframe frequency, resolution, and mismatched primary and backup stream settings. These are distinct issues: do not alter keyframe, resolution, or audio settings unless the displayed error points there.
-
Test the outbound connection if OBS looks healthy
If OBS’s local output looks right but YouTube still receives no data, test the internet connection’s ability to send data out. YouTube recommends testing upload connectivity and contacting the internet service provider if the test identifies a connection issue. A healthy local preview does not rule out an outbound network problem; a network test is a diagnostic step, not proof that the network is at fault.

Check whether OBS uses an integration instead of a stream key
Some encoder workflows connect through a software login or integration rather than a manually entered key. If that is how your setup works and the connection fails, YouTube advises contacting the software provider because the integration may need an update. The phrase “OBS is streaming” does not establish which connection method is configured.
Use the symptoms to narrow the search
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Live Control Room displays a specific error | Note its wording and timestamp, then follow the matching guidance in YouTube’s error list. |
| There is no preview, although OBS appears to be running | Check the intended broadcast’s server URL and stream key, then inspect OBS’s output and stream indicators. The symptom alone does not identify which side failed. |
| OBS’s local audio or video is wrong | Inspect the active sources, encoder errors, and CPU load before changing YouTube ingest settings. |
| OBS’s local output looks right, but YouTube has no incoming data | Test outbound upload connectivity; contact your ISP if the test indicates a connection issue. |
| The preview appears, but viewers report playback problems | Check stream health. Determine whether the reports come from one viewer, viewers sharing a network, or viewers on different networks; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes these patterns. |
After YouTube starts receiving data
Use the preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room to confirm that the feed is arriving as expected before proceeding with the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow says to wait for the preview and then select Go live. The current labels and available indicators may vary as YouTube updates Live Control Room; follow the status and error text shown for your stream. For health information and metrics, see See your live stream’s metrics.
