YouTube can fail partially: the homepage may load while videos buffer, comments may disappear while playback works, or sign-in may fail only in one app. A problem that follows you across several devices and unrelated networks is more consistent with a YouTube-side, regional, ISP or DNS incident. A failure limited to one browser, app, television or Wi-Fi network is usually local.
First, find out whether the problem is widespread
Run this isolation test before clearing data or reinstalling anything:
- Open a different video, preferably from an unrelated channel.
- Try YouTube in both the app and a current browser.
- Test another device.
- Switch Wi-Fi to cellular data, or use a trusted hotspot where practical. Cellular charges may apply.
- Check whether other websites and streaming services work.
- Ask someone on a different internet connection to test YouTube.
- Compare the result with DownDetector’s YouTube report categories, which include website, app, login, server connection and video streaming.
DownDetector is based on user reports, not an official diagnosis. A spike can indicate a possible incident, a regional ISP problem, a popular event, or a reporting surge. Describe it as “reports have spiked” unless YouTube confirms an incident.
| What you see | More likely explanation | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube fails on several devices and networks | Platform, regional, ISP or DNS problem | Check independent reports and official updates |
| Only one browser fails | Cache, cookies, extension or browser setting | Private window or another browser |
| App fails but browser works | App cache, version or device issue | Update, force-close and clear cache |
| TV fails but phone works | TV app, firmware or TV network issue | Power-cycle and update the TV/device |
| Only home Wi-Fi fails | Router, ISP, DNS or filtering | Test cellular data or a hotspot |
| Only one video fails | Availability, licensing or account restriction | Try several unrelated videos |
| Videos work but comments or recommendations do not | Partial feature outage or account/session issue | Refresh, sign in and check outage reports |
| YouTube works but YouTube TV fails | Separate YouTube TV service issue | Use YouTube TV Help |
Fast fixes when the service is working for others
1. Reload and try a different video
Reload the browser page, or close and reopen the app. YouTube recommends reloading to reconnect when a page will not load. A single unavailable video is not evidence that the whole service is down.

2. Change networks
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If playback returns immediately, investigate the original router, ISP route, DNS settings, VPN, proxy or filtering rather than repeatedly resetting YouTube.
3. Test a private window and disable extensions temporarily
Open an Incognito or Private window, or use another current browser. Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy and script extensions, VPN browser add-ons and content filters. If playback works, re-enable tools one at a time to find the conflict. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance specifically notes that ad-blocking extensions can affect playback and suggests allowing ads while testing: YouTube video-error help. Restore your security and privacy protections after the test.
4. Update software and restart
Install browser and YouTube app updates, then update your phone, computer, TV or streaming device. Restart after updating. Use the latest compatible browser or app rather than assuming Chrome is mandatory.
5. Clear Android app cache
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & notifications, or the equivalent app-management menu.
- Choose See all apps if shown, then select YouTube.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, reopen YouTube and test.
Labels vary by Android manufacturer and version. Do not confuse Clear cache with clearing storage/data, which can sign you out and reset settings. Details are in YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guide.

6. Clear browser site data
Delete YouTube/Google site data if your browser supports site-specific removal; otherwise clear cached files and cookies in browser settings. You may be signed out and lose saved preferences. YouTube lists cache and cookie removal as a response to “Something went wrong.”
7. Restart the device and router
Close YouTube, restart the phone, computer, TV or streaming stick, and reboot the router if the problem is network-specific. For a TV device, disconnect power, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it and try again.
8. Investigate DNS and filtering only after basic tests
Custom DNS, Pi-hole or network-wide ad blocking, parental controls, school or workplace firewalls, router security features, VPNs and proxies can block YouTube endpoints. Confirm that your preferred DNS is still configured and that third-party software has not changed it. Changing DNS is not a guaranteed fix and can affect privacy, filtering and local network behavior.
Device-specific recovery
iPhone and iPad
- Force-close and reopen YouTube.
- Update it in the App Store and restart the device.
- Compare Wi-Fi with cellular data.
- Open YouTube in Safari to distinguish an app problem.
- Delete and reinstall the app only after less disruptive steps fail; you may need to sign in again.
iOS does not provide a universal Android-style “clear cache” button for YouTube.

Android phones and tablets
Update and force-close the app, use Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage & cache → Clear cache, restart, and test another network. Reinstall only if those steps fail.
Windows and Mac
- Try a private window and an alternate current browser.
- Disable extensions temporarily.
- Update the browser and clear YouTube site data.
- Check VPN/proxy and DNS settings.
- Restart the computer.
Smart TVs, Chromecast and streaming devices
- Power-cycle the device.
- Update the YouTube app and device firmware.
- Check the TV’s network connection.
- Try casting from a phone or playing through an HDMI-connected computer as a diagnostic comparison.
YouTube states a minimum recommendation of 7 Mbps for HD streaming on TV; this is not a universal requirement for every resolution, codec or household setup: YouTube streaming and video help.
What common error messages mean
“Something went wrong”
Reload, sign in, update the app or browser, test with extensions disabled, clear cache and cookies, and check for DNS or network modifications. If several networks show the same error, consult outage reports.
“Playback error. Tap to retry”
Possible causes include a temporary service incident, unstable connection, app cache, extension conflict, outdated software or a video-specific restriction. Try another video and another network.

“Connection to server lost”
Refresh, change networks, restart the app and device, and temporarily test without a VPN, proxy or filtering tool.
“You’re offline” while other sites work
The message can reflect a YouTube outage, DNS/filtering, a stale app session or a browser conflict; it does not prove that the device has lost internet access.
“This video is unavailable”
Check for removal, private status, regional or age restrictions, licensing limits, or account eligibility. A single unavailable video is not a platform outage.
Black screen, audio-only playback or buffering
Try a lower quality temporarily, another video, a device restart, software updates and a different network or device. Also check the device’s audio and display settings.

Account, sign-in and creator issues
If playback works while signed out but fails after signing in, investigate the account session, Brand Account or channel switching, age or location restrictions, Premium or purchase entitlements, and account settings. Some features may not work correctly when you are signed out, according to YouTube’s video-error guidance.
Watching can work while uploads, processing, monetization or Studio fail. Those are creator-service problems and should be handled through YouTube’s creator-focused support rather than treated as ordinary playback failure.
YouTube and YouTube TV are different services
Regular YouTube is the video platform, including its website, mobile apps, Music and Kids experiences. YouTube TV is a separate live-television subscription service with distinct login, billing, location and playback systems. A regular YouTube incident does not automatically affect YouTube TV, and a YouTube TV problem does not necessarily affect normal YouTube viewing. Use the separate YouTube TV Help center for that product.
When waiting is the sensible fix
Stop making disruptive changes when YouTube fails on independent devices and networks, reports are rising across more than one feature, and official channels acknowledge an incident. Save unsent upload or Studio work, avoid repeatedly signing out or changing account settings, recheck status after a reasonable interval, and try again after a restoration update. Regional or ISP-specific failures may recover at a different time from the main service.
