You can work on finding an audience before you qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP); reaching a subscriber or view threshold does not guarantee acceptance or earnings. Use the Earn area in YouTube Studio to check your channel’s current eligibility, available features, application status, and region-specific requirements.
What YouTube provides to help creators grow
YouTube directs creators who have not yet reached YPP eligibility to its Creator Tips hub and official YPP guidance, YouTube Creators resources, the Help Forum, and official tutorial and troubleshooting channels. These are places to learn platform practices and solve practical problems—not a formula or guarantee of audience growth.

Use those resources alongside your channel’s own analytics: compare how viewers find and watch your videos, identify which topics and formats hold their attention, and use what you learn to plan the next upload. No single format or growth tactic is established as universally best; fit depends on your channel and audience.
What you need to join the YouTube Partner Program
YouTube’s standard YPP ad-revenue eligibility overview lists two alternative audience thresholds. You must also meet the channel, account, policy, and regional requirements, then pass YouTube’s review.
#1 Best Overall
| Standard ad-revenue threshold | What counts |
|---|---|
| 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours | The watch hours must accrue in the prior 12 months. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward this threshold. |
| 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views | The Shorts views must accrue in the prior 90 days. |
In addition, YouTube lists these application requirements: your channel must be in a supported country or region, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, have 2-Step Verification enabled, have access to advanced features, and have one active AdSense for YouTube account linked or set up through YouTube Studio. Once you apply, accept the base terms, and link the payment account, YouTube reviews the channel. Its automated systems and human reviewers assess the channel as a whole. As YouTube puts it, “If it meets our policies and guidelines, we’ll accept your channel into YPP.”
What “qualified” means in practice
The thresholds are not simply lifetime totals. The watch-hour route concerns qualified public watch hours inside the stated 12-month window; the Shorts route concerns qualified views inside the stated 90-day window. Shorts Feed watch time cannot be used to reach the 4,000-hour requirement. YouTube also excludes some Shorts views from payment eligibility, including artificial or fake views and some non-original material.
Earlier access in eligible regions
In participating countries and regions, expanded YPP can provide earlier access to fan-funding features and Shopping. Its entry thresholds are 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the prior 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the prior 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days. This is not a replacement for the higher thresholds for ad-revenue sharing. Check YouTube’s current expanded YPP eligibility and participating locations; availability is regional, and review still applies.

How to check eligibility and apply in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Earn in the navigation.
- Review the eligibility information and available monetization features shown for your channel and region. If you have not qualified, the page offers a notification option for when you become eligible.
- When eligible, follow the application flow in Earn, accept the base terms, and link an existing AdSense for YouTube account or set one up through Studio.
- Return to Earn to check the application review status and any notices or terms requiring action.
Meeting the numbers only makes a channel eligible to apply. YPP policies, account requirements, and YouTube’s channel-wide review still determine acceptance; features can also have separate eligibility rules and geographic or legal limits. Requirements, participating locations, feature availability, and terms can change, so the Earn page and linked current YouTube Partner Program guidance are the practical checkpoints for your channel.
How creators can earn on YouTube
YouTube describes several possible revenue routes. Each has its own availability and eligibility criteria; inclusion here does not mean a feature is enabled for every channel.
Rank #3
| Route | Where it fits | Published share or basis |
|---|---|---|
| Watch Page Ads | Ads on eligible long-form videos and live streams on the Watch Page. | 55% of net revenue under the Watch Page Monetization Module. |
| Shorts Feed ads | Eligible Shorts viewing in the Shorts Feed. | 45% of the revenue allocated to the creator from the Creator Pool, based on the creator’s share of views. |
| YouTube Premium | Revenue associated with eligible Premium members watching your content. | Revenue route described by YouTube; no share figure stated in its earnings overview. |
| Memberships | Recurring fan support through channel memberships, where available. | 70% of net revenue under the Commerce Product Module. |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Fan payments during eligible live-stream interactions. | 70% of net revenue under the Commerce Product Module. |
| Super Thanks | Fan payments on eligible videos and Shorts. | 70% of net revenue under the Commerce Product Module. |
| Shopping | Eligible creators may connect an official merchandise store and, where available, promote products from other brands. | Feature-specific; the cited overview does not state a universal revenue share. |
The shares above are module-specific published terms, not earnings estimates. Watch Page Ads and the listed fan-funding features are expressed as shares of net revenue; the Shorts figure applies to the creator’s allocation from the Creator Pool, not a simple share of every ad shown. Actual income depends on revenue and allocation. YouTube states in its partner earnings overview: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.”
Shorts revenue sharing begins for eligible views after a creator accepts the Shorts Monetization Module; views from before acceptance are not eligible under YouTube’s policy. For the applicable modules and feature terms, review the current YouTube monetization features and policies.

Why an eligible channel can still be rejected or lose monetization
YouTube’s review is not just a count check. Channel monetization policies, Community Guidelines, terms, copyright requirements, and applicable AdSense or commerce policies all matter. Reviewers consider the channel as a whole, and YouTube says it continues monitoring partner channels. Ad-supported videos must also meet advertiser-friendly guidelines.
- Originality: Non-original Shorts compilations or reuploads without original additions can be ineligible for Shorts revenue sharing. Consider whether a viewer can identify meaningful original contribution across the channel.
- Authentic activity: Artificial or fake Shorts views do not qualify for payment.
- Advertiser suitability: Content that violates advertiser-friendly guidelines may not be eligible for ad revenue even if a channel is in YPP.
- Copyright and other policies: A numerical threshold does not override copyright obligations, Community Guidelines, or applicable program terms.
Because YouTube can review channels over time, acceptance is not a permanent exemption from compliance. Check the relevant channel monetization policies and advertiser-friendly content guidelines when deciding what to publish or how to use third-party material.

Use the Earn page’s notification option if it appears, and keep building a publishing plan around what your own audience watches. They do not promise a particular growth rate or substitute for meeting YPP requirements.

Announced changes and checking what applies now
YouTube’s official pages include changes scheduled to begin February 1, 2027, including updated terms. Those are announced future changes, not requirements to apply under as of October 2026. Check YouTube Studio for notices and terms you must accept, and use the current Help pages for thresholds and regional availability rather than assuming a future change is already in force.
