Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe YouTube.com Continue watching row is supposed to pick up where you left off, then stop resuming once you’ve finished the video. When it keeps rewinding to an unfinished timestamp, it usually means YouTube isn’t receiving (or can’t store) the playback progress it needs to update your history.
This guide covers the most common causes and the most reliable fixes, from clearing the right browser data to correcting signed-in account mismatches and handling chapters, playlists, and network interruptions.

Why YouTube keeps resuming the wrong spot
“Continue watching” relies on watch-time signals and history stored in your Google account plus local browser/app data. If those signals are delayed, blocked, or applied to the wrong account/device, YouTube may keep showing an older “last watched” position.

- Signed into a different Google account on YouTube.com, the browser, or a different device.
- Blocked cookies or restrictive tracking prevention that prevents YouTube from saving progress.
- Outdated or corrupted site data (cache, cookies) that holds stale playback state.
- Playback interruptions (ads, tab switching, backgrounding on mobile, network drops, VPN/proxy).
- Video chapters/segments or playlist behavior that changes the way “last watched” is stored.
- Slow watch-time reporting—you may have watched to the end, but the “finished” update didn’t make it to YouTube.
The good news: most cases are fixable with a small set of changes.

Quick checks that fix it in minutes
- Confirm the account: Open YouTube.com in a browser and make sure the profile icon shows the same Google account you use on your phone/other devices.
- Wait for completion: If you just finished a video, give it 30–90 seconds. If YouTube still shows an unfinished timestamp, proceed to the troubleshooting steps below.
- Check your connection: If you’re on spotty Wi‑Fi, switch to a more stable network and try again.
- Try a different player method: Play the video from the watch page (not an embedded player on another site) and see whether progress updates correctly.
Troubleshoot on YouTube.com (desktop browser)
Start with the least disruptive tests: signed-in state, then normalizing watch signals, then fixing cookies/cache and extension conflicts.
Confirm you’re signed into the same Google account
On YouTube.com, click your profile icon (top-right) and verify the email shown. Then check your phone and any other device you used to watch the same video.
If you’re signed into multiple accounts, “Continue watching” can pull the last saved position from the other account, making it look like YouTube didn’t record completion.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Refresh watch progress signals
Before clearing anything, do a short “reset” playback attempt on the same device:
- Open the video that keeps resuming.
- Scrub forward to a point close to the end (not just a few seconds past where it resumes).
- Watch until the end screen appears and stay on the tab for an extra 30–60 seconds.
- Reload YouTube.com and check Continue watching.
Clear the right site data (cookies and cache)
If progress is stale, clearing YouTube site data is often the fastest fix. Target only YouTube to avoid wiping everything.
Chrome / Edge
- Open Settings → Privacy & security.
- Select Third-party cookies or Cookies and site data.
- Open See all site data and permissions.
- Search for youtube.com and googlevideo.com and remove site data entries.
- Then clear cache for youtube.com via the site data page if available.
- Reload YouTube.com and sign back in if prompted.
Firefox
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Under Cookies and Site Data, click Manage Data.
- Search for youtube.com, remove entries, then reload.
Disable browser extensions that interfere with playback or cookies
Extensions are a frequent culprit when they block tracking scripts, inject players, or modify HTTP requests. Temporarily disable them and retest.
- Ad blockers (especially those that also block analytics domains)
- Privacy tools with strict cookie blocking
- “Video enhancer” or playback speed tools
- Script blockers (NoScript-style)
After disabling, play the problematic video again and confirm whether Continue watching updates.

Try a private window (baseline test)
Open an Incognito (Chrome/Edge) or Private Window (Firefox/Safari) and sign into YouTube. If the issue disappears, it’s almost certainly your cookies, cache, or extensions.
Troubleshoot on iPhone and iPad (YouTube app)
The YouTube mobile app stores progress differently than the browser. If progress won’t save, it’s usually backgrounding, network stability, or a stale app session.
Force-close and reopen the app
- Swipe up from the bottom to open the app switcher.
- Swipe the YouTube app away to close it.
- Reopen YouTube and play the video again to completion.
Check Background App Refresh and network stability
On iPhone/iPad, go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh. If it’s disabled for YouTube, progress syncing can lag.
Also avoid watching over a flaky network. If you’re on VPN, test without it.
Update the app and sign out/in
- Open the App Store → Updates and install the latest YouTube version.
- Open YouTube → tap your profile icon → Sign out.
- Close the app fully, reopen it, and sign back in.
Then test the same video again and see if Continue watching stops resuming.
Troubleshoot on Android (YouTube app)
Android fixes usually come down to clearing the app cache and forcing a clean session.
Force-stop, clear cache, and re-launch
- Open Settings → Apps → YouTube.
- Tap Force stop.
- Tap Storage → Clear cache (avoid clearing data unless you must).
- Reopen YouTube and try again.
Recheck permissions and storage
If you have a low-storage condition, apps can behave unpredictably. Check Storage and free space if you’re below ~1 GB remaining.

Not all “Continue watching” problems are account-related. Some videos and viewing contexts save progress differently.
- Chapters: If the video has chapters, resuming may jump to the chapter boundary even after you watched longer.
- Playlists: Switching between playlist items can update “last watched” in a way that looks like it’s stuck. Test by opening the video directly from its watch page.
- Embeds: Watching the same video embedded on another site may track progress separately from YouTube.com’s watch page.
- Autoplay/multi-video pages: If autoplay starts the next video and you interrupt it, YouTube might retain the last completed “segment” rather than your overall completion.
If only one specific video is affected across devices, assume the video’s chapter/playlist structure is part of the trigger.
Workarounds if progress won’t stick
Sometimes you’ll need a practical workaround until the underlying watch history sync corrects itself.
Use the scrub bar carefully and watch long enough for stats to save
Don’t just “tap play” briefly—watch for long enough that YouTube records the completion. A safe practice is to remain on the tab for 30–60 seconds after the end screen loads.
Finish via the end-screen and avoid interruptions
When the video ends, let the end screen (recommended videos) appear. If you close immediately, switch apps, or lose network right at the end, the completion signal can fail to register.
Watch the video to completion from the same source
For example: if you started on YouTube.com (web) but finished on the iOS app, test finishing again on the same source. Consistency reduces cross-context progress conflicts.

Remove the video from Continue watching controls
If YouTube shows a persistent stale entry, you can remove the video from your watch-related row. On the video’s entry, look for a three-dot menu and choose the option that removes it from the row (wording varies by platform).
Then reload YouTube and play the video fresh.

Pause watch history (test) and re-enable
This is a diagnostic step. Go to YouTube’s History controls (via your Google account settings) and pause Watch history.
Then turn it back on and test. If the issue changes behavior after re-enabling, you’ve confirmed a history-state problem.
Clear watch history for the affected period
If “Continue watching” is reading old entries, clearing the relevant range can help. In Google account activity settings for YouTube, remove watch history entries related to the problematic video(s).
After clearing, watch the video to completion again and verify the resume prompt no longer appears at the old timestamp.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Closing the tab instantly after the end: wait 30–60 seconds for progress to commit.
- Using multiple accounts without noticing: always verify the email on YouTube.com and the mobile app.
- Testing only one platform: if it happens on web, test on iPhone/iPad or Android to isolate whether it’s local or account-wide.
- Clearing all cookies for the whole browser: target YouTube site data first to reduce collateral damage.
- Forgetting VPN/proxy: network routing changes can delay or alter tracking requests.
Troubleshooting checklist (fast reference)
| Step | What to do | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify you’re signed into the same Google account | Continue watching stops showing the wrong timestamp |
| 2 | Finish the video and wait 30–90 seconds after completion | The end-screen appears and the resume point updates |
| 3 | Clear youtube.com cookies/site data (browser) | Fresh progress sync persists across reloads |
| 4 | Disable ad blockers/privacy extensions temporarily | Progress saves correctly without the extension |
| 5 | Force-close/reopen YouTube (iPhone/iPad) or clear app cache (Android) | Mobile resumes correctly on the next play |
| 6 | Test from YouTube.com watch page (not an embed) | Progress becomes accurate for the direct watch source |
FAQs
Why does YouTube show Continue watching even after I finished the video?
Most often, the completion signal didn’t save due to a network interruption, immediate tab/app close, or blocked cookies/history. Waiting 30–90 seconds after the end screen and testing with extensions disabled usually resolves it.
Does watching on another device affect Continue watching?
Yes. YouTube merges watch progress at the account level, but cross-context differences (web vs app, embeds, playlists) can create mismatched timestamps. Testing the completion on the same source you were using typically fixes the “stuck” resume point.
Will clearing cookies or app cache delete my watch history?
Browser cache and cookies usually don’t erase your account watch history, but clearing site data may sign you out. On mobile, clear cache typically won’t delete your watch history; clear data can reset app local state.
Could autoplay cause this problem?
It can. If autoplay transitions to another video and you interrupt right away, YouTube may save a last watched position that looks like it’s not advancing. Try finishing one video fully (end screen visible) before switching.
What if only one specific video keeps resuming?
That usually points to chapters, playlist item structure, or the way that particular video is being watched (embed vs direct watch page). Rewatch to completion from the video’s own watch page and avoid embeddings for the test.
Bottom Line
When YouTube.com keeps resuming unfinished videos, it’s almost always a progress-saving issue: wrong account, blocked cookies/history, stale local site/app data, or an interruption right at completion. Work through the checklist—account verification, then wait for completion, then cookies/cache and extension conflicts.
If the problem persists for one video across multiple devices, focus on chapters/playlists and test watching directly from the watch page rather than an embed.
