Because this type of issue can be caused by a site-side change, Google may investigate before a full fix rolls out.
While the investigation runs, you can usually narrow the cause and restore your feed by working through a short set of browser/app checks. The steps below are written to be practical: start with the quickest, most reversible actions and move toward deeper cache resets only if needed.

Goal: confirm whether the problem is global or local, then apply the right workaround for your device. If the bug is server-side, most of these steps won’t change the root cause—but they can still get you back to a working homepage view.
What a YouTube barren homepage bug looks like
Users typically describe one of these patterns:
- Empty or minimal homepage: the “Home” tab shows little to nothing, often without an obvious error.
- Missing rows: you might see only a couple of sections (or none), even though your history usually drives personalized recommendations.
- Endless loading without content: spinners or “Something went wrong” messages may appear intermittently.
- Layout glitches: thumbnails fail to render, or elements appear in a broken order.
In many cases, other pages still work—for example, search results, a direct channel URL, or watching a specific video continues to function.

Why it happens (and why it can take time)
A “barren homepage” can be caused by several layers: account personalization, cached homepage responses, ad/recommendation components, browser extensions, or network filtering. When multiple users report it at the same time, it’s often tied to a backend rollout or a regression in the homepage feed service.
Even when Google is investigating, fixes may roll out gradually (region-by-region, account cohorts, or device categories). That’s why you’ll see mixed experiences: one device works while another shows an empty feed.
Check for a site-side issue before you troubleshoot
Before you clear everything, confirm whether other people are seeing it too. If it’s server-side, focus on workarounds rather than deep troubleshooting.
- Try opening https://www.youtube.com/feed/recommended in the same browser/device.
- Check YouTube’s official status or reliability signals through Google’s public channels (for example, the Google Workspace Status Dashboard style pages where applicable) and reputable outage reporting sites.
- Ask a second device on the same network (or same phone, different Wi‑Fi) to open YouTube Home.
- Check social reporting for the same date/time window. If multiple threads mention “blank homepage” and “Google investigating,” it’s likely global.
If direct video pages and search work, you can assume the issue is narrowed to the homepage feed or personalization layer.
Fast workarounds that usually bring content back
These actions are quick and reversible. Try them in order.
- Hard refresh: on desktop, press Ctrl+F5 (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (macOS).
- Sign out/in: in the YouTube app or browser, sign out of your Google account and sign back in.
- Switch accounts: open YouTube in a new session (or different Google account) to test whether personalization data is broken.
- Use search: search for any known channel or video and open it. If watch pages work, your account can still function—your homepage feed is the issue.
- Turn off VPN/proxy: reroute traffic can block certain recommendation endpoints or cause caching mismatches.
Troubleshoot on the YouTube website (desktop browsers)
For desktop browsers, most “blank homepage” cases are caused by stale cookies, blocking extensions, or a cached feed response. Work through these in sequence.
1) Hard refresh and verify the correct account
Hard refreshes the homepage shell and forces a new feed fetch. Then confirm you’re logged into the same Google account you expect.

- Press Ctrl+F5 (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (macOS).
- Open the profile icon menu on YouTube and confirm the correct account email.
- Try the Home tab again.
2) Disable extensions and try Incognito/Private
Ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and content filters can interfere with the homepage’s dynamic components. Use an isolated session to test.
- Open an Incognito/Private window: Ctrl+Shift+N or Cmd+Shift+N.
- In the Incognito window, sign in and open YouTube Home.
- If it works, disable extensions one by one in your main browser window and retry Home after each change.
3) Clear cookies/cache for youtube.com
Clearing only YouTube-related cookies is safer than wiping everything. It forces a fresh homepage feed response and fixes broken session personalization.
- Open your browser’s Settings > Privacy & security.
- Go to Cookies and site data.
- Search for and remove youtube.com and, if listed, googlevideo.com or accounts.google.com site data.
- Clear cached images/files if your browser offers that option (for the same site scope, if possible).
- Restart the browser and sign into YouTube again.
If you see multiple accounts in your cookie list, remove the specific entry tied to the problematic account where possible.
4) Test alternate network conditions
Network filtering can block domains used by homepage components. Test with a different connection to separate “blocked endpoints” from “account feed issue.”
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off and use cellular hotspot (or mobile data) to test YouTube Home.
- Disable corporate/school proxies if you can.
- Check if your router applies parental controls or DNS filtering.
5) Reset browser settings (only if needed)
If Incognito works but normal mode doesn’t, you can often fix it without full resets. If the issue persists in all modes, reset only what you changed.
- Re-enable any security policies you intentionally disabled.
- Update the browser to the latest version.
- If still broken, consider a “restore settings to defaults” feature—this removes conflicting flags and can fix broken content rendering.
Troubleshoot on iPhone and iPad (iOS / Safari or the YouTube app)
On iOS, the biggest wins are restarting the app, verifying iOS restrictions, and reinstalling (if needed) after a cache reset isn’t available.
1) Force-close the YouTube app and reopen
- Swipe up from the bottom (or double-press Home on older iPhones) to open the app switcher.
- Swipe the YouTube app away to force-close.
- Reopen YouTube and check the Home tab.
2) Check iOS-level content restrictions
If content filters are enabled, YouTube may show reduced or empty results depending on how “Restricted Mode” is interpreted by the app.

- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Check Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If restrictions are enabled, temporarily disable and test YouTube Home (then re-enable if you need them).
3) Clear YouTube app cache (if available) or reinstall
Some YouTube app builds expose a cache-clearing option, but iOS doesn’t always provide a straightforward “clear cache” flow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the YouTube app, go to Settings.
- Look for Clear cache (if present) and confirm.
- If there’s no cache option or it doesn’t help, uninstall and reinstall YouTube.
4) Sign out/in and verify content settings
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile icon.
- Sign out.
- Close the app, reopen it, and sign in again.
- Verify your default content preferences (channel region, language, and whether you use any restricted modes).
5) Test on another Wi‑Fi or cellular connection
This is the quickest way to identify DNS filtering or network-level blocks. If the Home tab loads on cellular but not Wi‑Fi, you’ve got a network issue, not a YouTube account feed failure.
Troubleshoot on Android (YouTube app)
Android gives you more control over app cache. That makes it easier to fix a barren homepage caused by corrupted cached feed data.
1) Force-stop and relaunch
- Open Settings > Apps > YouTube.
- Tap Force stop.
- Reopen YouTube and check Home.
2) Clear app cache (and only clear data if necessary)
Clearing cache removes temporary feed payloads without wiping your account session in most cases. Clearing data is more disruptive and signs you out depending on your build.
- Go to Settings > Apps > YouTube.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Restart the app and check Home.
- If still empty, consider Clear data as a last resort, then sign in again.
3) Update the app and your device OS
Outdated YouTube versions can fail to render dynamic homepage components correctly after server-side updates.

- Update your Android version if an OS update is available.
4) Remove VPN/proxy and retry
VPNs can alter routing and DNS behavior. Disable them, then relaunch YouTube and check Home.
Troubleshoot on TV and streaming devices
TV YouTube apps use different caching layers, but the fixes are still predictable: update the app, clear cache if possible, and sign out/in.

When it’s likely account- or personalization-related
If only your account shows a barren homepage (other accounts work), focus on personalization data, history controls, and restricted modes.
Try a different Google account
Sign into YouTube with a different Google profile. If the homepage is normal, your primary account’s feed personalization is the likely culprit.

Reset recommendations and watch history controls
If your watch history is paused or history is corrupted, YouTube may have less data to generate recommendations.
- Open YouTube Settings > History.
- Verify whether Watch history and Search history are paused.
- Toggle them off/on (only if you’re comfortable re-enabling history), then refresh Home.
Check SafeSearch / Restricted Mode
Restricted Mode and SafeSearch can affect what appears on the homepage, especially if parental controls are configured. Confirm these settings in the YouTube app or on the account level.
How to report the bug to Google (so investigation actually helps)
When Google investigates, detailed bug reports help engineers correlate the issue with specific client versions, networks, and account states.
- On the YouTube app, open the video feed or Home screen and look for Send feedback (or a similar feedback option).
- Describe what you see: “Home tab loads blank/barren with missing recommendations.”
- Include device model, OS version, and YouTube app version (for iOS/Android, note the iOS/Android version and update date).
- Include browser + version for desktop (for example, Chrome version from Settings > About Chrome).
- Add steps to reproduce: “After signing in, Home shows no rows; Search works; direct video pages play.”
- If possible, attach a screenshot showing the empty feed.
If you can, also report whether Incognito/Private mode fixes it. That strongly suggests a caching or personalization issue rather than a total outage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon mistakes that waste time
- Clearing cookies for the wrong domain: clearing random browser data doesn’t guarantee the homepage feed cookies are removed. Remove site data for youtube.com first.
- Ignoring VPN/proxy: many “works on cellular, breaks on Wi‑Fi” cases are routing/DNS related.
- Testing only one device: try at least one other device or browser profile to identify whether it’s global.
- Over-resetting immediately: uninstalling/reinstalling too early can mask the actual cause. Start with cache/extension tests first.
Troubleshooting matrix (quick “try this first” list)
| What you see | Most likely cause | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Home is empty, Search works | Homepage feed/personalization glitch | Clear youtube.com cookies; sign out/in |
| Only one account is affected | Account personalization data or history controls | Try another Google account; check history paused |
| Incognito works but normal browser doesn’t | Extension/cookie interference | Disable extensions; clear site cookies |
| Only on one network (Wi‑Fi breaks, cellular works) | DNS filtering or blocked endpoints | Disable VPN/proxy; switch networks |
| App/Home empty on iPhone/iPad and Android | Server-side rollout regression | Check status/outage signals; wait for rollout |
FAQ: YouTube homepage barren bug
Is this a YouTube-wide outage or just my device?
If Search and individual video pages work, but Home is empty, it’s often a homepage feed issue rather than a full outage. Check a second device (or Incognito/Private) to see whether the problem is local.

Why does YouTube Home look blank but videos still play?
The homepage is a curated feed that can depend on personalization, recommendation services, and dynamic UI components. Those pieces can fail independently from the player, so watching can still work.
Will clearing cookies permanently fix the bug?
Clearing cookies can fix a corrupted session or stale homepage response. But if the root cause is server-side, you may need to wait for Google’s backend fix—cookies only help with client-side state.
Does using a different Google account help?
Yes. If a second account shows a normal homepage, your primary account’s personalization or history controls are the likely trigger. If both accounts are affected on the same device, it points back to a feed or site issue.
What should I include when reporting the bug?
Include device model, OS version, app/browser version, and a short reproduction path (sign in > open Home > blank feed while Search works). Screenshots and timestamps are especially useful.
How long should I wait for Google’s investigation?
For server-side regressions, fixes can roll out within hours, but it varies by region and client cohort. If you still see the barren homepage after trying cache/cookie resets and alternate sessions, treat it as likely server-side and monitor for updates.
Bottom Line
A barren YouTube homepage is usually fixable on the client side if it’s caused by stale cookies, extensions, or corrupted app cache. Start with Incognito/Private mode, then clear youtube.com cookies or the YouTube app cache, and verify your account and settings.
If the issue matches multiple reports and only the homepage is affected across devices, it may be the kind of bug Google is investigating. In that case, focus on the fastest workarounds (search, direct links, alternate accounts) while you wait for the backend rollout to restore normal recommendations.
