If YouTube closes, disappears, or becomes unresponsive, start with the least disruptive fixes: force-close the app, restart the device, update YouTube and the operating system, then test youtube.com in a browser. On Android, clear YouTube’s cache before clearing its storage; on iPhone or iPad, delete and redownload the app. Test another network or device before assuming YouTube is down.
First, identify what “crashing” means
A hard crash closes the app or makes it unusable. The correct fix depends on when and how it fails.

Check whether YouTube is down

youtube.comin Safari, Chrome, or another supported browser. - Switch networks: use cellular data if you are on Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi if you are on cellular.
- Try another phone, tablet, computer, or TV.
- Check whether other apps and websites work.
Interpret the results this way:
- If the browser works while the app crashes, the problem is more likely local to the app, its data, or compatibility.
- If YouTube fails only on one Wi-Fi network, investigate the router, DNS, VPN, carrier, corporate filter, or parental-control service.
- If the app and browser fail on multiple devices and networks, a service-side problem becomes more plausible.
- If only one Google account is affected, test another account before changing device settings.
- If every app is unstable, focus on the operating system, storage, heat, or device health.
The Google Play Status Dashboard showed “No incidents” at 7:08 a.m. UTC on August 18, 2026, but it covers selected Google Play developer products, not every YouTube service: Google Play Status Dashboard. Do not treat that page, or a third-party outage graph, as proof that YouTube is working everywhere. Call an outage likely only when failures are consistent across devices and networks or YouTube acknowledges one.
Fixes for any phone or tablet
1. Force-close YouTube
- iPhone or iPad: Open the app switcher and swipe YouTube away, then reopen it.
- Android: Open recent apps and dismiss YouTube. If it still will not behave, open its app settings and use Force stop.

2. Restart the device
A normal restart clears temporary app and system state and is low risk. Both Google and Apple include restarting in their initial troubleshooting sequences.

3. Update YouTube
- Android: Open Google Play, search for YouTube, and install an available update.
- iPhone or iPad: Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, choose App Updates, and update YouTube if listed.
There is no single universally verified current YouTube version for every region and platform, so use the store listing for your device rather than a number copied from another phone.
4. Update the operating system
Install pending Android, iOS, or iPadOS updates, especially if YouTube began crashing after an update or no app update is available. Google and Apple both recommend checking device software when app or playback problems continue.
5. Check free storage
- Android: Settings → Storage
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → General → iPhone/iPad Storage
Low storage can prevent updates and contribute to instability. No universal amount of free space guarantees a fix, so free enough room for the pending update and normal device operation.

6. Test without network filters
Temporarily test with a VPN, ad-blocking DNS, corporate filter, or parental-control profile disabled. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommendation to remove privacy or workplace protections permanently.
Fix YouTube crashing on Android
Clear the cache first
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and version. The usual path is Settings → Apps (or Applications) → YouTube → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear cache. Google documents the same general route in its Android troubleshooting guidance.

Clear storage or data only if necessary
If the crash remains, return to the same screen and choose Clear storage, Clear data, or the equivalent label. This resets local app state, may sign you out, and can remove downloads and other locally stored data. Do it only if you can authenticate to your Google account again.

Reinstall only where Android permits it
Some phones allow YouTube to be uninstalled and reinstalled; preinstalled versions may instead offer Uninstall updates. The labels and results are manufacturer-dependent, so treat this as an advanced option rather than a guaranteed universal path. Avoid unofficial APKs and “cleaner” apps.

Fix YouTube crashing on iPhone or iPad
Delete and redownload YouTube
- Delete the YouTube app.
- Redownload it from the App Store.
- Open it and test the same action that caused the crash.
Apple’s current guidance uses this sequence after force-closing, restarting, and checking updates: Apple Support. Deleting an app may remove data stored in it. Offloading can retain some documents and data where supported, but neither option guarantees that YouTube downloads, settings, or session state will remain.
If reinstalling helps only briefly
- Install all pending iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Confirm that the device has adequate storage.
- Test YouTube in Safari.
- Test without VPN, DNS, content-filtering, or parental-control software.
- Try another Google account if the crash appears account-specific.
- Record the device model, operating-system version, YouTube version, and exact trigger before contacting support.
If YouTube works in a browser but not the app
Browser playback shows that YouTube, your account, and the current network can still be reachable. It points more strongly toward the app installation, local data, or app-device compatibility, although it does not prove which one. Keep using the browser as a temporary workaround; it may not provide every app-only feature, such as some notifications, downloads, or casting behavior.
For computers, Google also recommends updating the computer and browser, closing excess tabs, restarting, and trying Chrome: YouTube Help for computer playback.
If YouTube crashes on every device
When the failure reproduces on multiple devices and networks, gather evidence before repeatedly clearing data. A service-side incident, account-specific state, or network-wide filtering is more likely than a single damaged installation. If only one account fails, compare it with another account; if every account fails on one network, test elsewhere.

- Do not factory-reset a phone or tablet for a YouTube-only crash.
- Do not install unofficial YouTube APKs, RAM boosters, registry tools, or phone-cleaner utilities.
- Do not buy a VPN, antivirus product, or YouTube Premium subscription as a default crash fix. Premium is an ad-free viewing option, not a repair service: YouTube Premium.
- Do not repeatedly clear storage or delete the app if you cannot sign back into the account or need its offline downloads.
Report a reproducible problem
After reproducing the crash, include:
- Device model and Android, iOS, or iPadOS version
- YouTube app version
- Whether it fails on launch, search, Shorts, a particular video, casting, downloads, or sign-in
- Whether browser playback works
- Whether another network or device works
- Approximate date and time, including your time zone
- A screenshot or screen recording if the app stays open long enough
In YouTube, use Profile icon → Help and Feedback → Send Feedback, as described by Google. If the App Store version still fails after Apple’s steps, Apple directs users to contact the app developer. Seek manufacturer or professional device support when multiple apps crash or the whole device is unstable.
