YouTube app for TVs will add these new features soon

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reports and rollout chatter about the YouTube app for TVs usually boil down to the same thing: feature flags, staged deployments, and app updates that land in waves across platforms. If you’re seeing references to “new features soon,” your best move is to verify your current YouTube app version, confirm your TV OS is up to date, and know how to trigger or preview changes when they’re available.

This guide focuses on practical, TV-specific steps—Android TV/Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Roku, and Apple TV (tvOS)—plus troubleshooting when the update you’re waiting for doesn’t show up. Because YouTube rollouts are staged, the “soon” you hear may mean days to weeks depending on region and device model.

What the announcement means for your TV

When YouTube adds features to its TV app, you typically won’t get a single universal update that changes everything overnight. Instead, YouTube uses a mix of app updates and server-side feature flags—so two TVs with the same model can receive different behavior at the same time.

You’ll usually notice changes in one of these places: on the Home screen, in Search results, in the player (controls, captions, quality options), or inside profile and settings menus. Sometimes the “new feature” is really a UI refresh that gradually replaces the old layout.

Which features are most likely to show up next (and what they do)

Without a specific public changelog for your exact TV platform, it’s safest to treat “new features soon” as “typical TV YouTube updates that commonly roll out.” The items below are the kinds of improvements that regularly appear first on TV apps because they’re easiest to test at scale.

Improved playback controls and quality behavior

TV YouTube updates often refine how buffering works and how quality selection behaves under changing network conditions. You may see smoother transitions, more consistent “Auto” quality, or better caption syncing.

Enhanced search and recommendations UI

YouTube frequently updates how categories, filters, or suggested rows appear on the TV Home screen. Expect layout tweaks that make it faster to jump to subscriptions, channels, or specific content types.

Profile and sign-in experience improvements

Many TV rollouts improve profile switching, saved preferences, and how your watch history affects recommendations. If you use multiple profiles in a household, you may see fewer mismatches between “what you watched” and “what you’re shown.”

More consistent subtitle and accessibility handling

TV updates commonly address subtitle stability (for example, fewer missing captions) and accessibility menu responsiveness using your remote. If you rely on captions, pay attention to whether they start faster or remain readable during seeks.

Player stability fixes (the boring but important ones)

Even when the headline is “new features,” the real win can be fewer playback crashes, fewer “something went wrong” errors, and better handling of resumes after interruptions.

How to check whether you have the latest YouTube app for your TV

Start with the basics: update the YouTube app itself, then confirm your TV operating system is current. A newer YouTube build can still refuse certain features if the TV OS is behind (especially on older webOS and Tizen versions).

Android TV and Google TV

On Android TV/Google TV, the fastest way is the Google Play Store (or the system’s app manager) to check the YouTube app build.

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Select Search and type YouTube.
  3. Open YouTube app listing.
  4. If you see Update, select it.
  5. After updating, launch YouTube and look for any new UI prompts or settings changes.

If your Play Store shows no update but you suspect you’re behind, check whether your TV has pending system updates in Settings → System → About → System update.

Samsung Tizen

On Samsung smart TVs (Tizen), app updates are typically managed through the TV’s app store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Apps on your Samsung remote.
  2. Launch Samsung Apps (or Galaxy Store depending on model).
  3. Find YouTube.
  4. Select Update if shown (or check Updates list).
  5. Restart the TV after updating, then open YouTube.

Samsung can be “staged” about updates too, so even with updates enabled, you might not see the latest YouTube build immediately.

LG webOS

On LG webOS, app updates are usually handled via the LG Content Store.

  1. Open LG Content Store.
  2. Search for YouTube.
  3. If you see Update, select it.
  4. After updating, reboot the TV.

If your Content Store shows the app is up to date but features still don’t show, check webOS system updates in Settings → All Settings → General → About this TV → Check for updates.

Roku

On Roku, updates are generally straightforward and usually prompt you, but you should still verify manually.

Apple TV (tvOS)

If you use the YouTube app on Apple TV, updates typically happen through the App Store.

  1. Open App Store on Apple TV.
  2. Go to Updates.
  3. Update YouTube if it appears.
  4. Check tvOS updates in Settings → System → Software Updates.

Apple TV can also receive staged app changes server-side, so features might appear without a visible UI label.

How to enable or preview new features when they are available

Once your app is current, features still may require one or more “activation” steps—often as simple as changing a setting or signing in cleanly.

Turn on app updates automatically

This prevents you from staying on an older YouTube build longer than necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open TV Settings.
  2. Find Apps, Auto update, or Automatic updates.
  3. Enable automatic app updates.
  4. Verify your TV stays connected to the internet (some TVs go offline if “power saving” is too aggressive).

Reinstall the YouTube app safely

If you suspect your app is stuck on an older module, a clean reinstall can fix mismatched components.

  1. Open Settings → Apps (wording varies).
  2. Select YouTube.
  3. Choose Uninstall (or Remove channel on some platforms).
  4. Reinstall YouTube from the official store.
  5. Sign in again and check Home and Settings in YouTube.

Clear cache and restart the TV

Clearing cache can help when a feature flag is partially applied and the app ends up in a broken UI state.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → YouTube.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Choose Clear cache (avoid clearing data unless you’re ready to sign in again).
  4. Restart the TV.

On some platforms you can’t clear cache separately; then just restart after updating or reinstalling.

Check settings inside the YouTube TV experience

New features are often controlled by settings such as subtitles, playback quality, autoplay, or improved navigation. Once you’re updated, scan for changes in these areas:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Account / Profile: make sure the right profile is selected.
  • Settings: subtitles/captions preferences, playback options, and privacy controls.
  • Notifications: if relevant, confirm your choices haven’t reset.
  • Player: captions and quality controls can change with UI updates.

Troubleshooting: when the new features don’t appear

Feature rollouts can be delayed, but you don’t have to guess. Use a structured checklist so you don’t waste time on random toggles.

  • More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.

Common causes

  • Staged rollout: your device hasn’t been included yet, even if the app is updated.
  • Outdated TV OS: the YouTube app may run, but it can’t activate certain components.
  • Network quirks: captive portals, strict DNS filters, or unstable Wi‑Fi can prevent feature activation tests.
  • Profile mismatch: you’re signed in to a different Google Account/profile than you think.
  • App cache corruption: UI elements won’t render correctly until cache is cleared or the app is reinstalled.

What to try in order

  1. Confirm YouTube app update is installed (re-check the app store for your platform).
  2. Install any pending TV OS updates.
  3. Restart the TV and relaunch YouTube.
  4. Sign out and sign back into the correct Google Account (if the option exists in your TV YouTube UI).
  5. Clear cache for YouTube; if still stuck, reinstall the app.
  6. Switch networks temporarily (for example, mobile hotspot) to rule out DNS or router issues.
  7. Check whether other apps that stream (like another video app) behave normally—this helps separate YouTube issues from network issues.

Comparing the TV YouTube experience vs other devices

It’s common to see features on mobile first (Android or iPhone), then on TV later. That doesn’t mean you’re missing out—you’re just seeing the staged rollout in the correct order for your platform.

Device What often arrives first Why it differs
Phone/tablet (iOS/Android) New controls and recommendation experiments Touch UI makes A/B testing easier
TV apps Playback stability, captions behavior, remote navigation UI Different rendering pipeline and remote interaction model
Web (YouTube on a browser) Account-level settings and player experiments Browser-based rollout and data collection is faster

If you want the newest behavior sooner, you can sometimes replicate the account state across devices (sign in, ensure settings match), but the TV app still needs its own version rollout.

Common mistakes that delay feature rollouts

  • Ignoring system updates: updating YouTube without updating the TV OS can block feature activation.
  • Using an old “official” build: sideloaded or unofficial YouTube APK/channel variants (where supported) can break updates.
  • Staying on one profile: if you share the TV, the active YouTube profile affects what experiments you see.
  • Assuming “no change” means “no update”: staged rollouts often mean you’ll wait even after you update.
  • Forgetting to restart: some TVs apply updates but won’t fully refresh the app’s UI state until reboot.

FAQ about YouTube updates on TVs

How long does it usually take for YouTube features to show up on TV after an update?

There’s no single schedule. Rollouts are commonly staged over days to a few weeks depending on device model, region, and the specific feature flag.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does reinstalling the YouTube app force new features to appear?

It can help with UI glitches and cached components, but it can’t force server-side feature flags. Still, it’s one of the most effective fixes when an update installs but the UI never changes.

Will updating my TV OS make new features appear sooner?

Often, yes. Newer TV OS builds can be required for newer YouTube app components to run correctly, especially on older webOS and Tizen devices.

Can I tell which YouTube app version I’m running on my TV?

Some platforms show the app version in an app info or about screen. If you don’t see it, you can rely on the app store update status and your TV OS version as the practical check.

Why do I see new features on my phone but not on my TV?

Mobile and TV apps can receive features in different rollout waves. Your account state might be the same, but the TV app still needs its own update and server-side activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

If the YouTube app for TVs is adding new features soon, the fastest path to getting them is boring but effective: update the YouTube app, update your TV OS, and restart or reinstall if the UI looks stuck. Feature rollouts are staged, so your timing may differ even with identical TVs.

Use the platform-specific steps above to verify your install, then follow the troubleshooting order to eliminate cache, profile, and network issues. When the rollout flag hits your device, you’ll be ready to see it immediately.
