YouTube Analytics in YouTube Studio shows how viewers find your videos, how they watch, and whether they return. Use those reports to spot patterns and choose what to test next—not to assume that one metric explains why a video performed as it did. Start with a goal, compare like with like, and judge results against your own channel history.
YouTube has been gradually rolling out an updated Studio experience since July 2026, so labels and layouts may differ between accounts. The reporting principles below apply even if your menus look different.

What does growth mean for your channel?
Decide what you want to improve before opening a report. A channel focused on discovery has different priorities from one trying to deepen viewing or build a returning audience. YouTube’s guidance is that goals and business aspirations shape what success means; there is no single metric that applies to every creator.
- More discovery: examine impressions, thumbnail click-through rate (CTR), traffic sources, and search terms.
- Deeper viewing: examine watch time, average view duration, engaged views, and audience retention.
- More repeat viewing: look at new, casual, and regular viewers, alongside subscriber gains and format overlap where available.
- A business outcome: include revenue if the channel has access to that report.
Choose a small scorecard that reflects your goal. YouTube says “there’s no universal "good" benchmark for performance metrics like click-through rate (CTR)” and “there’s no single most important metric to optimize for.” Avoid fixed CTR promises or generic growth targets; use your own historical performance as context.

Where to find YouTube Analytics
You can open analytics in YouTube Studio at the channel level or for an individual video. Analytics is also available through YouTube’s apps, but some reports may not be available on mobile.
- For channel-level reporting: open YouTube Studio and select Analytics.
- For one video: open Content, select the video, then open its Analytics.
- Start with Overview: use it for a high-level view, then choose the report that answers your question. Depending on availability, that may be Content, Reach, Engagement, Audience, Revenue, or Trends.
The Trends report can surface audience searches and content gaps. Treat those as prompts for ideas, not a guarantee that a topic will perform well.
How is your channel doing? Start with discovery
Use Reach to understand where viewers found a video. Traffic-source categories can include YouTube Search, Browse features, Suggested videos, external sources, and others. Impressions show how often YouTube displayed a thumbnail in eligible places; CTR describes how often viewers watched after seeing one. YouTube defines thumbnail CTR as the share of thumbnail impressions that resulted in a view.

CTR is not a stand-alone quality score. Read it alongside impressions, resulting views, and watch time. A high CTR on a small or different audience is not necessarily comparable with a lower CTR after a video reaches a broader audience. Compare a video with your own videos or a relevant historical period before deciding whether to change its thumbnail or topic.
If impressions are low
Check traffic sources and available search terms first. Ask whether the topic, format, and packaging match the audience you want to reach. Low impressions alone do not establish that a thumbnail is weak; the video may have had limited distribution or may address a narrower topic.
If impressions are present but CTR differs from your norm
Review the thumbnail and title in context with the impressions and views. If you make a change, record it and define a comparison window. A difference after the change is an association to investigate, not proof that the thumbnail alone caused the result.

Am I on the right track? Inspect viewing behavior
Use Engagement and the retention graph to see how long viewers watched and where attention changed. YouTube’s help guidance says, “The shape of the audience retention graph can tell you which parts of your video are most and least interesting to viewers.” A rise or fall can suggest a question to investigate—for example, whether an introduction runs too long or the promised answer arrives late—but a graph does not establish why viewers behaved that way.

Detailed retention activity can show where viewers start or stop watching. Use that observation to form a content hypothesis, then test it in later videos rather than treating one graph as a causal conclusion.
When retention highlights are available
YouTube’s highlighted retention moments are conditional, not guaranteed. The video must be at least 60 seconds long and have at least 100 views to be eligible for highlighted key moments; highlights appear only when YouTube detects them. If they are absent, that does not by itself indicate a problem with the video.

Who is watching, and are viewers returning?
Audience reports describe who watches, including new, casual, and regular viewers. Pair reach measures with returning-audience measures: broad exposure and a habit of coming back are different aspects of channel development.
Monthly audience is a rolling measure, not a fixed calendar-month total. YouTube calculates it daily from unique viewers during the preceding 28 days. Some audience and traffic data may be limited, so not every report or breakdown will be complete for every channel.

Advanced Mode lets you choose date ranges, breakdowns, metrics, filters, and comparisons; save reports; and export data. It can compare videos, groups, playlists, and time periods. YouTube’s examples include comparing videos at the same point in their life cycle, such as their first 24 hours, first 7 days, or first 28 days. Those are comparison windows, not performance targets.

To organize related material, you can create a group containing up to 500 videos, playlists, or channels. Compare videos with similar topics, formats, or life-cycle windows, and consider seasonality when comparing different periods.
- Choose a question: for example, whether a change in upload frequency coincided with a change in audience engagement.
- Set a comparable window: compare the same number of days since publication, or choose a meaningful historical period.
- Select relevant measures: include discovery, viewing depth, audience development, or revenue according to the question.
- Record the change and intended result: note a topic, format, thumbnail treatment, or schedule change and the metric you expect to move.
- Review over a meaningful period: account for seasonality and compare more than one video where possible.
A before-and-after difference may help you decide what to test next, but it does not prove that the change caused the result. A comparison can inform an experiment; it cannot isolate every factor that affected performance.
What is a good performance benchmark?
There is no universal good CTR or single number that defines a healthy channel. YouTube recommends looking at your own historical metrics and zooming out to a broader period—90 days is one example in its channel-health guidance, not a rule that fits every channel.

Use comparisons to refine your next experiment rather than to label a video a success or failure from one number.
