If OBS stopped sending your YouTube 24/7 stream after its key was lost or reset, copy the current key from YouTube Studio and replace the saved one in OBS. Then verify the stream destination and restart the encoder. If it still will not connect, diagnose the encoder, network, or YouTube account separately: a correct key cannot fix those problems.
Restore the OBS-to-YouTube connection
- Copy the current key. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live to open Live Control Room, then open the Stream tab and copy the current stream key. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load your prior settings, including the key, unless it was changed or reset. A stream key is a credential and destination identifier, not something you need to buy. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it; editors and viewers cannot. - Update OBS. Open Settings → Stream and replace the saved key with the current YouTube key. Check that the selected service/server and stream URL match the intended YouTube stream. The encoder needs both the YouTube Live server URL and the key. YouTube encoder setup instructions
- Start the encoder. Select Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live if that stream’s workflow requires it. Check the current stream settings for auto-start or auto-stop rather than assuming either is enabled.
- Confirm the result. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream status. If the stream remains offline or reports an error, use the checks below instead of repeatedly replacing a key that is already current.
What to check if the new key does not work
Key, server URL, or stream selection
A key can be valid but belong to a different stream or destination. Recopy it from the intended stream in Live Control Room, then verify the server URL and selected service in OBS. YouTube’s guidance for third-party encoder start errors is to get the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors

OBS or encoder fault
Update OBS, inspect its error messages and output settings, and check CPU load while streaming. If you have a local recording, review it for audio or video problems. YouTube suggests trying another encoder when checks of the source and current encoder do not explain poor output; this is a diagnostic option, not a guarantee that changing software will fix a connection problem. Dropped frames or insufficient upload capacity
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Check whether other devices or uploads are using the connection and test outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For a primary and backup encoder, its guidance is to plan for the primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Network interference or configuration
OBS lists security software, VPNs, bundled network-optimization software, and outdated network drivers as possible causes of connection trouble. Check these only as part of diagnosis, and change one thing at a time. Reducing OBS’s bitrate may help a connection that cannot sustain the current setting, but it lowers video quality and will not repair the underlying network issue. Copyright, strikes, or account restrictions
If YouTube reports a copyright match, strike, or other restriction, changing the key will not clear it. Copyright matches can cause a placeholder, interruption, or termination, and strikes can also end a stream. Check YouTube Studio for the specific notice. Even when you have licensed content, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Make a 24/7 stream more resilient
Plan for encoder and network failure
For a long-running broadcast, consider a backup encoder and test the handoff rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet during a test, then checking that the player switches to the backup. Monitor the public channel or watch page and a mobile device, keep an eye on audio and video, and confirm that any local archive is still growing. A disruption in connectivity can break the stream. Keep a separate recording plan
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast end to end. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that a longer continuous stream will be archived as one complete recording. If you need footage for retention, keep a local recording or another separate retention plan, and plan transitions so viewers know what to expect.
