If your YouTube 24/7 stream began reconnecting after your Linux VPS public IP changed, the change may have interrupted the encoder’s existing outbound connection—but timing alone does not prove the cause. Check the first failure against VPS network events, then verify the YouTube RTMPS endpoint, stream key, TLS connection, and YouTube stream health. Keep YouTube’s ingestion hostname in the encoder; the VPS public IP is a different address.
Why a VPS IP change can interrupt a YouTube stream
A live encoder maintains an outbound connection to YouTube. If the VPS public egress address or route changes, that existing connection can be interrupted, leaving the encoder to reconnect. This is a plausible networking explanation, not a cause YouTube specifically identifies in its published RTMPS documentation. A disconnect close in time to an IP or route change is a useful clue to investigate, not proof by itself.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Distinguish the VPS’s public source IP from YouTube’s ingestion server address. Your encoder should connect to the RTMPS URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room and use the intended stream key. Do not replace the YouTube endpoint with the VPS IP.
Diagnose the reconnect loop in order
- Correlate the first disconnect. Record the exact UTC time of each disconnect and reconnect. Compare the first failure—not just later retries—with VPS provider network events, reboot records, public address changes, and interface or route changes. Correlation helps narrow the investigation but does not establish a cause.
- Inspect encoder and service logs. Find the earliest error. Check whether the encoder process is still running, whether hostname resolution succeeds, and whether it can establish a new connection. A supervisor can restart a failed process, but repeated restarts will not fix a wrong endpoint, blocked outbound traffic, or recurring network changes.
- Verify the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Live Control Room, recopy or confirm the RTMPS stream URL and make sure the encoder has the intended stream key. Confirm that the encoder uses
rtmps://, rather than plainrtmp://, and supports RTMPS. YouTube advises checking the URL, protocol, and encoder compatibility when a connection times out (YouTube Help: encoder streaming settings). - Check outbound connectivity and TLS hostname handling. Confirm that the VPS can make outbound TCP connections on port 443. Preserve the YouTube ingestion hostname: RTMPS needs TLS and the correct hostname for SNI authentication. Do not substitute an IP address for that hostname (Google for Developers: RTMPS ingestion).
- Inspect YouTube’s stream health as well as host logs. Check the stream’s messages and health in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s LiveStreams API also exposes status and health information, including detected configuration or delivery problems (LiveStreams API). A network reconnect can coexist with an encoder, bitrate, or delivery warning; identify which signals are present rather than assuming they share one cause.
- Ask the VPS provider what actually changed. Ask whether the event affected outbound egress, whether the public address is reserved or ephemeral, and what options exist for stable outbound connectivity. Verify whether a claimed static or reserved IP applies to outbound traffic and routing; the label alone does not establish that it does. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements do not state that the sender must use a stable public source IP.
RTMPS settings to verify
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its ingestion guidance specifies port 443 and the correct server hostname for SNI authentication (encoder settings; RTMPS ingestion). Check these connection details separately from video quality settings: changing bitrate is not an established fix for a source-IP or route change.

| Setting or check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS, not plain RTMP; confirm encoder compatibility. |
| Destination | The RTMPS URL provided by YouTube Live Control Room, including its hostname and path. |
| Transport and TLS | Outbound TCP port 443 is reachable; TLS uses the YouTube ingestion hostname for SNI. |
| Stream key | The intended key is configured and matches the stream. Previously used stream settings, including the key, may load in YouTube’s encoder workflow. |
Check bitrate without mistaking it for an IP fix
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates. The figures depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are ingestion settings, not a remedy for a changing VPS source address (YouTube Help).
| Video format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Compare the encoder’s configured video bitrate with the relevant recommendation, then check YouTube’s health messages for a delivery or configuration warning. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health and messages while streaming. A bitrate warning may need its own fix, but it does not show that bitrate caused an IP-related reconnect.

Keep a 24/7 stream recoverable
- Monitor both the VPS service and YouTube stream health; an encoder process that remains alive does not guarantee a healthy YouTube delivery.
- Use process supervision to restart an encoder that exits, while recognizing that restarts cannot repair faulty connection details, blocked egress, or repeated route changes.
- Document what should happen if the VPS provider reconfigures networking, and retain timestamps and logs for the first failure.
- When comparing hosting or relay arrangements, ask about egress stability through network events, reserved or floating IP coverage for outbound traffic, region and network reliability, sustained outbound bandwidth limits, recovery options, and total operating cost. Available information here does not establish a preferred VPS provider or quantify those trade-offs.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after sending content stops. That guidance does not establish exactly what happens to every long-running broadcast after a reconnect; check the individual broadcast’s state in YouTube Studio (YouTube Help).
