Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA router reboot breaks the network path between a local encoder such as OBS and YouTube; no stream key or setting can keep that connection alive while the router is unavailable. Once the router and internet connection return, check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room separately: a recovered router does not prove the public live event resumed. Prepare a reconnection plan and test it, but do not count on every broadcast resuming seamlessly.
What a router reboot interrupts—and what it does not
YouTube receives an encoder’s video through a stream URL and stream key. These connection settings identify where and how the encoder sends its feed; they do not provide network connectivity or prevent an outage. YouTube’s encoder guide describes connecting an encoder to a live stream.

During a router reboot, the computer may lose its route to the internet even if OBS remains open and YouTube’s event still exists. When the router returns, the encoder may reconnect, but the event may instead be waiting for data or may have ended. YouTube and OBS document setup and troubleshooting; neither guarantees that every 24/7 broadcast automatically resumes after every router reboot.
Recover the stream after the router comes back
- Wait for the router to finish rebooting. Check that the streaming computer has internet access before changing encoder or YouTube settings.
- Check OBS. Inspect its connection state and logs. If it has not reconnected, use OBS’s reconnect or start workflow and confirm that it is sending data. OBS lists network instability, modem/router connectivity, and other network hardware among possible causes of dropped frames or disconnections; it recommends wired networking for streaming. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (dated September 30, 2024).
- Check the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm whether it is live, waiting for data, or ended, and verify that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. The encoder workflow and live stream settings guide describe the platform’s stream setup and controls.
- If needed, reconnect or start the encoder again. Follow the encoder’s normal connection workflow, then confirm the event’s state in Live Control Room. Do not reset the stream key just because the router rebooted; YouTube describes resetting keys for key-specific problems, not as a router-reboot recovery step. The live stream settings guide covers stream settings.
For a channel that must run continuously, test this sequence during planned maintenance and note what happens at each stage: router recovery, internet restoration, encoder reconnection, and YouTube event status. That gives you a recovery procedure suited to your setup, not a guaranteed recovery time.

Use Ethernet for the encoder computer
A wired connection can avoid local Wi-Fi instability between the computer and router. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming. Ethernet does not prevent a router reboot, restore an ISP outage, or help while the router itself is unavailable.
Consider dual-WAN failover only for the failure it covers
A dual-WAN router can switch from a primary to a configured secondary internet connection when its detection system identifies a WAN failure. ASUS documents this behavior for supported configurations in Configure Auto Network Detection while enabling Dual WAN (last updated June 2, 2025); supported models and firmware can vary. This feature does not establish that a stream will survive reboot of the router performing the failover. Assess whether the backup path is independent, how failure detection works, and whether the encoder and YouTube event recover.

Know what fallback video can—and cannot—do
A streaming service’s cloud fallback-video feature may give viewers something to watch during an encoder disconnect if configured and available on the applicable plan. Restream says disconnect protection is limited to certain plans; check its current terms at Set up stream disconnect protection. Fallback video does not restore the local router or the encoder’s originating connection, and it is not proof that your YouTube stream has resumed.

Use RTMPS for encryption, not uptime
RTMPS encrypts the encoder-to-YouTube connection using TLS/SSL, as explained in YouTube’s RTMPS guide. Encryption protects the connection; it does not prevent downtime when the network path disappears.

Match power backup to the actual cause
A battery backup may be relevant if the reboot follows a power interruption and the router and other necessary equipment are connected to it. It cannot prevent a deliberate or software-triggered reboot, or an ISP outage. Without knowing why your router reboots, its model, and the equipment involved, there is no basis to recommend a particular backup unit.
| Option | What it can address | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet from encoder computer to router | Local Wi-Fi instability; OBS recommends a wired connection. | It does not prevent router reboots or fix ISP-side failures. |
| Dual-WAN failover | Loss of the primary WAN when a configured secondary path and failure detection are available. | It does not establish continuity through reboot of the router doing the failover. |
| Cloud fallback video | Viewer-facing video during an encoder disconnect, where the feature is configured and included in the applicable service plan. | It does not keep the local router or encoder’s originating connection online. |
| RTMPS | Encryption for the encoder-to-YouTube connection. | It does not prevent network downtime. |
| Router battery backup or UPS | Potentially relevant if the reboot is caused by power loss and the required equipment is powered by the backup. | It does not prevent a software reboot or ISP outage; a suitable model is not established here. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 YouTube channel plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud instead of relying on a home computer and router to originate it. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
