YouTube 24/7 Stream Drops Frames on an Indian Cloud VM After Enabling Software Encoding: How to Diagnose It

Enabling software encoding does not prove x264 is the cause of OBS frame drops. Identify the rising counter first, then troubleshoot the VM’s network, encoding or rendering path.

Enabling software encoding may overload a cloud VM, but “dropped frames” alone does not prove that x264 is the cause. In OBS, open View → Stats while the problem is happening and identify whether the counter rising is Dropped Frames (Network), Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag), or Missed Frames (Rendering Lag). Each points to a different part of the stream pipeline and needs a different fix.

The VM provider and size, guest operating system, OBS version, encoder preset, output settings, network path and actual OBS counters are unknown here. Treat the steps below as a diagnostic path—not a root-cause verdict or a guarantee that a particular VM can run continuously.

Identify which OBS counter is increasing

Reproduce the problem before changing settings. In OBS, open View → Stats and watch the counters during the failure. Also note the encoder and preset, output resolution and frame rate, configured bitrate, CPU use, and how long the stream has been running. Save the OBS log for the same session; it can help distinguish an immediate problem from one that appears only after an extended run.

OBS symptom What it indicates First area to investigate
Dropped Frames (Network) The connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, according to OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guidance. Upload capacity and stability between the VM and YouTube ingest.
Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) The encoder is not keeping pace with the configured output. Encoding workload, output settings and CPU or supported hardware-encoder capacity.
Missed Frames (Rendering Lag) OBS is not rendering/compositing frames on time. GPU resources exposed to the VM and scene/source complexity.

These problems can coexist. A busy CPU, for example, does not by itself establish which counter is responsible; use the counters and log to choose what to change.

If OBS shows network-dropped frames

Network drops concern the stream path, not simply whether the software encoder is x264. OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate.

  • Check that the VM’s sustained upload capacity can support the configured bitrate. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic; it is not a guarantee of stable throughput. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate in its encoder settings guidance.
  • Where available, try a different YouTube ingest/server option and compare the same stream settings.
  • Review VPNs, security or network-prioritization software, network drivers, routing and provider-side network issues. An Indian VM’s route to the selected ingest matters; the VM’s location alone does not establish the quality of that path.
  • OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing for supported Windows builds. These are not universal settings for every operating system or VM.
  • OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate when network conditions worsen, but that may lower stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection problem.

Change one item at a time and watch the network counter. A speed-test result or brief period without drops does not establish that the path can sustain a 24/7 stream.

If OBS shows encoding lag after enabling software encoding

Software encoding makes the CPU perform the encoding work. Enabling it makes CPU capacity worth checking, but the setting change alone does not prove that the CPU is the bottleneck. OBS Project notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance in its encoding performance troubleshooting guidance, dated 2021-06-12.

  1. Establish a baseline. Record the encoding-lag counter, CPU use, encoder and preset, output resolution, frame rate and bitrate during a representative stream.
  2. Reduce output resolution first. Test a lower output resolution, then compare the encoding-lag counter under otherwise similar conditions.
  3. Lower frame rate if needed. If 60 fps is not working, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps. Frame-rate reduction can also reduce motion smoothness, so judge it against the needs of the channel.
  4. Simplify what OBS must process. Reduce high-resolution media and expensive filters; remove or simplify browser sources and complex scenes where possible.
  5. Test one change at a time. Compare the counter and output after each adjustment. If the required quality still overloads software encoding, verify whether the current VM can supply more CPU capacity or an appropriate hardware encoder before changing instance size.

The VM provider, instance SKU and hardware exposed to its guest are not specified, so a particular upgrade or encoder cannot be recommended from the available case details. A cloud provider may advertise GPU products without exposing a usable GPU or hardware encoder to the VM you are running; verify the guest’s actual capabilities.

If OBS shows rendering lag

Rendering is separate from encoding: OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and complex scenes and sources add work. Check the rendering-lag counter rather than assuming that a CPU-oriented software-encoding change explains this symptom.

  • Reduce scene complexity and test whether high-resolution or animated sources, browser sources or filters are contributing.
  • Check what graphics resources the guest operating system actually sees. Headless and virtualized VMs vary; do not assume a generic GPU product will help unless its rendering capability is available to OBS in that environment.
  • After a change, compare the rendering counter under the same representative scene and stream settings.

Choose YouTube settings the VM can sustain

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum. The H.264 bitrate values below are platform recommendations, not measurements of this VM’s available bandwidth.

Use the values for the input codec and format you actually select, and choose a bitrate the VM-to-ingest path can continuously deliver. Run a representative test before relying on a 24/7 stream

YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and platform messages. Keep the test scene and bitrate representative: a short, static or idle test cannot establish that the VM will remain stable over a full day or longer.

  • Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, scene and audio sources.
  • Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test; record which counter changes and when.
  • For an issue that appears only after extended runtime, test long enough to observe the relevant timing and inspect the matching OBS log.
  • Consider a VM change only after measurements identify resource saturation, and verify provider, region, guest-visible CPU/GPU or encoder capability, network path and operating cost.

Without the OBS counters/log, VM vendor and SKU, operating system, OBS version, encoding preset, settings, CPU quota or steal, GPU exposure, upload throughput and loss, and time-to-failure, it is not possible to conclude whether this VM can stream to YouTube 24/7.
