If your Raspberry Pi is dropping frames while streaming to YouTube, first check whether the board can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is specified for H.264 encoding up to 1080p30—not 1080p60. On Raspberry Pi 5, the camera software uses software video encoders, so performance depends on the encoder and workload. Then check YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages to distinguish an encoding problem from a bitrate, format, or network problem.
Start with the Pi model and encoding path
Write down the exact Raspberry Pi model, the application doing the encoding, codec, resolution, frame rate, target bitrate, and keyframe interval. Those details matter because a stream can exceed the board’s encoding capability even when the same resolution appears in a decode specification.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B: do not confuse decode with encode
Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B as capable of H.264 decoding at 1080p60 and H.264 encoding at 1080p30. The 1080p60 figure is for decoding, not encoding. If your Pi 4 is configured to encode H.264 at 60 fps, that target is beyond its published encode specification. Check the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications.
If you are encoding at 1080p30 or below and still see dropped frames, do not assume the specification guarantees that your particular application and continuous workload will run reliably. Continue with the stream-health and network checks below.

Raspberry Pi 5: software encoding
Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation says Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its encoding performance therefore depends on the software, settings, and workload; do not treat the Pi 4 hardware-encoding specification as a Pi 5 guarantee. In the camera software, the documented --low-latency option can reduce encoding delay, with a slight reduction in coding efficiency and potentially in maximum frame rate. The documentation says it still easily achieves 1080p30, but that statement is not a guarantee for every third-party encoder or 24/7 setup. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.
Compare your stream settings with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current general live-encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its H.264 bitrate guidance includes these ranges:

- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader

| H.264 stream profile | YouTube bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a promise that a Raspberry Pi can encode every setting in a range or that your internet connection can sustain it. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its wider guidance, including other codecs and frame rates.
If the board cannot sustain the target, try a lower resolution or frame rate. If the encoder appears healthy but the outgoing connection cannot sustain the bitrate, lower the bitrate or resolution to fit the available upload bandwidth. Change one setting at a time and observe whether the health messages improve.

Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to locate the failure
Open YouTube Live Control Room while the stream is running and note the wording and timestamp of each health message. YouTube documents errors involving stream format, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and resolution. These messages help separate an ingest or configuration problem from a Pi-side encoding limit; “dropped frames” alone does not identify the cause.
- Format, resolution, or frame-rate warning: compare the actual outgoing stream settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance and correct the mismatch.
- Bitrate or insufficient-bandwidth warning: verify the configured bitrate and the connection’s ability to sustain it. YouTube advises lowering the selected resolution when bandwidth is insufficient.
- Keyframe warning: check the encoder’s keyframe interval against YouTube’s 2-second recommendation and 4-second maximum.
For definitions and remedies for individual messages, see YouTube’s live streaming error messages. A message’s timing is useful: if it appears when the stream settings change or the connection becomes unstable, investigate that part of the chain rather than treating every warning as a hardware limitation.

Run a representative test before relying on 24/7 operation
- Record the profile: note the Pi model, encoder application, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Check the target: compare the profile with the board’s published encoding capability and YouTube’s applicable settings guidance.
- Test representative content: use movement and audio similar to the material you intend to stream. A static test image may not represent a more demanding workload.
- Monitor Live Control Room: record the health messages and timestamps during the test, rather than relying only on whether the preview appears live.
- Adjust the likely limiting side: reduce resolution or frame rate if the Pi cannot encode the target; reduce bitrate or resolution if the outgoing connection is insufficient; correct format or keyframe settings when YouTube reports those errors.
- Repeat for a sustained period: confirm that the adjusted profile remains stable under a workload comparable to the intended continuous stream.
YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream. Neither its settings guidance nor Raspberry Pi’s specifications establish a universal 24/7 profile for every Pi revision, operating system, encoder, scene, network, and environment.
Troubleshooting common dropped-frame symptoms
| What you observe | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Pi 4 is configured for H.264 at 1080p60 | The Pi 4’s published H.264 encode specification is 1080p30; 1080p60 is its decode figure. | Reduce the target to a profile within the published encode specification, then test it. |
| YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth | Configured bitrate and the connection’s available upload capacity. | Lower the bitrate or resolution and check whether the warning clears. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect keyframe interval | Encoder keyframe setting compared with YouTube’s 2-second recommendation and 4-second maximum. | Set a 2-second interval if the encoder exposes that setting, then test again. |
| YouTube reports a format, resolution, or frame-rate error | The stream actually being sent, not only the values selected in the encoder interface. | Correct the outgoing profile to match YouTube’s guidance and recheck stream health. |
| Pi 5 camera software has excess encoding delay | Whether the documented camera software and its low-latency option apply to your setup. | Consider --low-latency for that camera software, accounting for its coding-efficiency and possible maximum-frame-rate tradeoff. It is not a universal remedy for other encoders. |
| No clear YouTube warning, but frames still drop | Board model, encoder path, chosen profile, and whether the test matches the real workload. | Reduce the workload one setting at a time and repeat a sustained, representative test while monitoring health. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep uploaded recordings live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to encoding continuously on a Raspberry Pi: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
