Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a 24/7 YouTube relaxation stream on one PC, choose OBS if you want a graphical interface and hands-on control; choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring a command line and supervising a background process. Neither makes a single computer, its power supply, or its internet connection failure-proof. Before going live, test the actual audio and video you plan to use, confirm your upload connection can sustain the bitrate, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
OBS vs. FFmpeg: which should you use?
The practical difference is how you operate the encoder, not a proven difference in reliability or performance. No controlled same-PC comparison establishes that either uses less CPU or stays live longer.

| Decision | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Operator experience | Graphical desktop workflow; convenient for manual setup and visual scene management. | Command-line workflow; suits operators who can configure options and inspect logs. |
| Configuration | Manage sources, scenes, and settings in the OBS interface. | Declare media inputs, filters, codecs, and output in command-line options. |
| Keeping it running | The desktop session and OBS must remain available. Auto-reconnect can help with brief network interruptions, but does not recover from every process failure. | Can run as a background process under a service manager or restart loop. Restarting after a process exits does not prove the resulting stream is healthy. |
| Best fit | You want a GUI and can keep the desktop session running. | You can maintain a command, diagnose logs, and configure process supervision. |
These are workflow distinctions, not measured performance results. A single-PC setup depends on that computer, its power and network connection, and the availability of the source media.
What YouTube needs from either encoder
OBS and FFmpeg both send an encoded stream to YouTube, so the choice of software does not remove YouTube’s ingest requirements. YouTube’s live encoder guidance documents RTMP or RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds.

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate examples are 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingest figures, not an independent performance test or a requirement that every relaxation stream use 1080p. Choose a resolution and bitrate your actual upload connection can sustain.
Prepare and test the stream before launch
- Choose representative source media. Test the audio and the visual motion you intend to stream, rather than a static placeholder if your final content moves. Check that local files remain accessible for the planned run.
- Check upload capacity. Test the connection and leave practical headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured upload rate. If the connection cannot sustain your target, lower the resolution or bitrate.
- Set the encoder to YouTube-compatible output. Use a supported video codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval where configurable, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Use RTMPS when available.
- Connect using your YouTube stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in a shared command or screenshot. Select the intended stream in YouTube Studio and verify the incoming preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Run a sustained test and watch stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream-health messages during the event. Look for dropped frames, unstable ingest, or audio/video problems before relying on the setup.
YouTube distinguishes a stream, which carries audio-video data and settings to the platform, from a broadcast, the event viewers watch. Its Live Streaming API guide uses a 24/7 feed as an example and explains that a separate broadcast can be created while that feed continues. This distinction matters if you automate broadcasts or manage them separately from the continuing encoder feed.

Set up the workflow that matches your skills
OBS: graphical control
Use OBS when you prefer configuring a desktop application, managing scenes visually, and starting or monitoring the stream manually. Add the media sources you need, configure the stream destination and key, then check the preview and audio before starting. Leave the computer, desktop session, and OBS running for the stream’s duration. Auto-reconnect may help after a brief network hiccup, but it is not a substitute for recovering from a crashed application, a powered-off PC, or an unavailable source file.
FFmpeg: command line and supervision
Use FFmpeg when you are comfortable specifying inputs and output settings in a command and checking logs. A looped media input can be sent to YouTube as an RTMP/RTMPS output; the precise command depends on your files, codecs, and desired output. Validate the command with a representative test before using it for a long run.

To relaunch FFmpeg when the process exits, run it under a service manager or restart loop. This only reacts to process exit: a process can remain running while the incoming stream has a problem, so continue to monitor YouTube’s stream-health status. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes technical protocol behavior; it does not promise uninterrupted operation or automatic recovery from every failure.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not detect an incoming stream: Check that the selected destination and stream key match the intended YouTube stream, that the encoder is running, and that the connection is not blocked or interrupted.
- Unstable stream health or dropped frames: Compare the chosen bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Reduce bitrate or resolution and test again; a short speed test alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable.
- The stream stops after a computer or application failure: OBS requires its desktop workflow to remain available. With FFmpeg, configure a supervisor to restart a process that exits, then verify the stream health after recovery. Neither approach removes PC, power, or network dependencies.
- Video works but audio is missing or wrong: Confirm the intended audio source is active, the output uses AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and a representative test recording includes the expected sound.
- Repeated or unavailable media: Check that the files used by the playlist or command exist at the configured paths and remain readable. A restart cannot fix a missing or damaged source file.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Only stream audio and visuals you have the rights or permission to use. A 24/7 format does not make copyrighted music, ambient recordings, artwork, or video safe to rebroadcast. Check the rights for every part of the loop, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules before building a channel around reused material. Avoid assuming that technical success—YouTube receiving the feed—means the content is eligible for monetization or free of claims.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a PC running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
