Before buying anything, try your TV’s built-in dialogue or voice setting, then test a volume-leveling option if loud music and effects drown out conversation. The exact controls depend on your TV, streaming device and speaker setup, so change one setting at a time and compare the same scene.
First, check which device is producing the sound
Sound settings may be on the TV, a connected streaming box, or a receiver or soundbar. Start with the device whose speakers you are actually listening to. Some TV audio settings may be unavailable when external speakers are selected; Samsung, for example, notes that some settings can be greyed out with external speaker output.

Use the remote for the active device to open its Sound or Audio settings. Menu names and availability vary by model, software, region and connected equipment, so treat the paths below as examples rather than universal instructions.

Look for a setting called Dialogue, Dialog, Speech, Voice, Clear Voice, Amplify, Dialog Enhancement or Speech Clarity. These modes are intended to make speech more prominent, though they can affect the balance of the overall sound. Play a scene where voices are difficult to hear, note the current sound, then switch the mode on and compare.

LG TVs
LG says music- and effects-forward mixing, as well as immersive sound modes, can make dialogue harder to hear. On 2021-and-later TVs with webOS 6 or later, its listed route is Settings > All Settings > Sound > Select Mode > Clear Voice Pro. For 2020-and-earlier webOS versions, LG lists Sound Mode > Clear Voice. Content and options can vary by model. See LG’s sound settings instructions.
Samsung TVs
Samsung describes Standard as balanced, Optimized as emphasizing effects and spaciousness, and Amplify as raising mid and high tones. If voices are hard to understand, try Amplify. Samsung also lists Auto Volume in Expert Settings; its purpose is to help manage differences in volume. The available settings can depend on the selected speaker output. Sony TVs
Depending on the model and setup, Sony lists options such as Dialog sound mode, Voice Zoom and Dialog enhancer. The available display and settings can vary with the model, country or region, current settings and connected device. Check Sony’s guide to dialogue and voice settings for your TV.

TCL Google TVs
TCL’s Google TV guide lists Speech and Night sound modes, along with possible equalizer, treble, bass, center speaker volume and TV Placement controls. A separate guide documents Enhanced Dialog on 2024 TCL Google TVs, with Off, Low, Medium and High levels. TCL notes that the best level is subjective, so compare the available choices with a familiar scene. See TCL’s Enhanced Dialog instructions.

Roku TVs
On compatible Roku TV systems, Dialog Enhancement boosts speech separately from background content. Some devices label the feature Speech Clarity, and both the setting options and route to it can vary. See Roku’s instructions for dialogue enhancement.
Apple TV 4K
For supported playback, Apple TV 4K offers Enhance Dialogue options called Enhance and Enhance More. Apple says Enhance More may alter the original audio mix. Availability depends on the playback, speakers or headphones and Apple TV model. See Apple’s audio settings guide.

Compare the change on the same scene
Replay the same passage at a comfortable listening level. If a setting offers levels, begin with low or medium and move higher only if needed. A stronger voice effect may make speech stand out while changing the balance of music and effects; Apple specifically warns that Enhance More may alter the original mix.

Keep the setting only if it improves clarity for you. If several options are available, compare whether each one raises speech relative to background sound, changes the overall mix, or is limited to particular playback conditions. As TCL puts it in its support guidance, “Audio is subjective and each user will have to test this setting to find their ‘sweet spot.’”

If loud effects still overpower speech, reduce volume swings
A dialogue mode and a dynamic-range control address different problems. Dialogue processing can make speech more prominent; volume leveling or a reduced-loud-sounds mode can narrow the difference between quiet and loud passages. Try one if conversation is clear in quiet scenes but becomes hard to hear when music or effects start.
- Auto Volume: Samsung lists this option in Expert Settings. Whether it is available depends on the TV and speaker setup.
- Night mode: TCL lists Night mode among the controls available on some Google TVs.
- Reduce Loud Sounds: Apple TV 4K offers this option for supported playback. Apple describes it as reducing dynamic range, which lowers the difference between loud and quiet sounds.
These controls work differently and are not guaranteed to fix every mix. Compare the result with the same passage, and turn the control off if it makes dialogue or other sounds less natural to you.
When the problem may be the program or the TV
If speech is difficult to hear in only one channel or show, compare another program or input. The issue may be specific to that signal or audio mix rather than a general problem with your TV.
