Your Test Suite Is Slow Because It Tests Postgres—Or Is It?

Real PostgreSQL tests can cost time and protect compatibility. Break down startup, migrations, data setup, queries, and cleanup before deciding what to optimize.

Testing against real PostgreSQL can add runtime, but the title alone cannot show whether PostgreSQL is your suite’s bottleneck. Startup, readiness checks, migrations, fixture loading, test queries, and cleanup are separate costs. Measure them before changing the tests: keep PostgreSQL coverage where database behavior matters, and speed up the phase that actually dominates.

What real PostgreSQL tests cost—and what they protect

A PostgreSQL integration test exercises the database your application uses, including behavior a mock cannot establish: SQL compatibility, migrations, constraints, transactions, and PostgreSQL-specific features. A containerized database can provide that real-database coverage in a controlled environment. The trade-off is runtime: Testcontainers’ Java documentation says its database containers are not as performant as H2, while emphasizing the compatibility benefit of running a real database. That does not mean every test needs PostgreSQL. Business logic that does not depend on database semantics can often be tested more quickly in isolated unit tests. Replacing database integration tests wholesale with mocks or a different database may reduce runtime but also removes evidence that the application works with PostgreSQL.

Find which phase is making the suite slow

Record the total runtime, then break it down using the test runner’s timings and logs. Compare a local run with CI: a large difference can point to environment startup, resource contention, or external waits rather than query execution alone.

  • Container startup and readiness: how long it takes to launch PostgreSQL and accept connections.
  • Schema setup: database creation and migrations, including whether they run repeatedly.
  • Fixture loading: time spent inserting baseline or per-test data.
  • Test bodies: identify slow individual tests and distinguish query time from application work.
  • Reset and cleanup: transaction rollback, truncation, snapshot restoration, or other cleanup performed between tests.
  • External waits: time waiting for other services, locks, or shared resources.

Look for repeated container starts, oversized fixtures, repeated migrations, slow cleanup, and tests forced to run serially because they share mutable state. Do not assume the database itself is slow just because tests use it.

Choose a change that targets the measured cost

Approach What it changes Main trade-off to check
Unit tests for database-independent logic Moves logic that does not need a database out of integration tests. These tests do not verify PostgreSQL behavior.
Reuse a PostgreSQL container Can avoid paying container startup and readiness costs repeatedly. Reuse scope must preserve isolation, especially with parallel tests.
Improve test-state reset Can avoid expensive cleanup or rebuilding the environment for each test. Rollback, truncation, or snapshots must leave each test with the state it expects.
Clone a prepared template database Can provide a pre-populated starting database when separate databases are needed. Cloning has PostgreSQL-specific constraints and still incurs database-creation work.
Use an embedded substitute such as H2 Can offer faster tests for some use cases. Behavior may differ from PostgreSQL; it is not a substitute for tests of PostgreSQL-specific behavior.

If startup dominates, reuse at a safe scope

Instead of starting a container for every test, consider one disposable PostgreSQL instance for a test class or suite. Testcontainers’ .NET example uses an xUnit class fixture to manage the container lifecycle. Testcontainers for .NET: PostgreSQL Reuse only as broadly as the framework and test design allow: tests that share mutable data can interfere with one another, particularly when run in parallel.

If reset dominates, compare isolation strategies

Transaction rollback can be effective when all relevant database work stays inside the transaction. PostgreSQL savepoints allow rollback to a point within a transaction, but a test framework cannot use that mechanism to undo work that escapes the transaction. PostgreSQL 18: Transactions

Other options include truncation or snapshot-and-restore. The Testcontainers Go PostgreSQL module documents snapshots for restoring clean test state without recreating the container; its docker-exec fallback is slower. This is a documented capability, not a guarantee that snapshots will improve every suite. Testcontainers for Go: PostgreSQL

If database creation dominates, consider a template

PostgreSQL 18’s CREATE DATABASE clones template1 by default and allows another template to be specified. The default WAL_LOG strategy is described as most efficient when the template is small. Copying a nonstandard source database requires that no other sessions be connected to it, and CREATE DATABASE cannot run inside a transaction block. These constraints can affect how a test runner prepares databases. PostgreSQL 18: CREATE DATABASE PostgreSQL 18: Managing Databases

Keep a deliberate PostgreSQL integration suite

Split tests by what they need to prove, not simply by whether they touch a repository or data-access layer:

  • Use unit tests for logic that does not rely on database semantics.
  • Keep PostgreSQL integration tests for SQL, migrations, constraints, transaction behavior, and database-specific behavior.
  • Run integration tests with a real PostgreSQL instance when compatibility with PostgreSQL is part of what the test must verify.

Measure again before calling it a fix

Make one change at a time and repeat the same timing breakdown under comparable local and CI conditions. Record the observed runtime and phase timings for your own project. There is no universal speedup to expect: results depend on the codebase, database size, migration workload, isolation needs, and test runner.
