Your SD Card’s Lifespan Depends on How You Use It

SD cards do not have a dependable expiration date. Normal-use guidance is 10 years or more, but write-heavy recording, card construction, and storage practices matter.

An SD card has no dependable expiration date. The SD Association says current technology and normal use typically give a card a lifespan of 10 years or more, but that is general guidance—not a guarantee for any particular card or its stored files. A major factor you can control is how often you write to the card: repeated or continuous recording puts it to work more heavily than occasional photo storage.

Why an SD card has no fixed expiration date

Cards differ in how they are manufactured, and their service life also depends on use. The SD Association’s consumer FAQ says that current technology with normal usage typically gives a card a lifespan of 10 years or more. Treat that as a broad estimate, not a countdown clock: it does not predict when an individual card will fail or promise how long files will remain safe.

“Expiration” can also mean two different things. A card may stop working reliably, while files on a card that is rarely used may still become corrupted or lost. SanDisk cautions that cards stored unused for too long are more prone to data corruption and loss. A card is removable storage, not a permanent archive.

How write-heavy use changes the decision

Taking occasional photos is different from recording video for long stretches or repeatedly overwriting footage. For sustained recording, consider a card explicitly designed for endurance rather than assuming a general-purpose card is suited to that workload. SanDisk says its endurance products are designed for recording video for long periods; Kingston describes endurance microSD cards for sustained-writing uses such as surveillance and dashcams.

#1 Best Overall
SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SD UHS-I Card, Up to 250MB/s Read and 120MB/s Write, 4K UHD, Full HD, U3, V30, SDSDXXJ-128G-GSCIN
  • CAPTURE LARGER THAN LIFE. Unlock 4K UHD(3) brilliance and pristine high res stills with video speed class ratings of U3 and V30(4).
  • SPEED BARRIERS SHATTERED. Save precious moments with blazing read speeds up to 250MB/s(2) and write speeds up to 170MB/s(2) [256GB-1TB capacities(1)].
  • MAXIMIZE WITH MASSIVE CAPACITY. Capture for longer and store more with up to 2TB(1) of storage that can hold up to 2,808 minutes of 4K UHD video recorded at 30 fps (641MB/minute)(9).
  • DEFY THE ELEMENTS. Unrelentingly resilient, Sandisk SD memory cards are engineered to perform in extreme conditions, despite rough handling and constant use.(6)
  • CONTENT MANAGEMENT, SIMPLIFIED. Back up, organize, and transfer everything easily with the Sandisk Memory Zone desktop app,(7) whether you use an SD card slot or a card reader.

That distinction helps choose a card, but it does not establish a guaranteed lifespan. The cited product guidance does not provide one universal write-cycle count or a reliable number of years for every card. Nor should endurance figures for commercial or industrial cards be applied to consumer models without a model-specific source.

Match the card to the device

  • Check whether the device takes a full-size SD card or microSD card.
  • Confirm the maximum supported capacity and the recording speed required by the device.
  • For frequent or continuous recording, check that the chosen card is intended for that workload. A product category alone does not establish compatibility.

For example, a dashcam owner should check the dashcam maker’s requirements before buying an endurance microSD card. The card must satisfy the device’s format, capacity, and speed requirements as well as the recording workload.

Warranty is coverage, not a failure forecast

A warranty tells you the terms under which a manufacturer may provide coverage; it does not say when a card should fail or how long it will retain data. Terms can vary by product, capacity, and region. SanDisk’s support page, updated June 30, 2026, lists these examples for its named endurance products:

SanDisk product Capacity or range Listed warranty
MAX Endurance 32GB 3 years
MAX Endurance 64GB 5 years
MAX Endurance 128GB 10 years
MAX Endurance 256GB 15 years
High Endurance microSD Not stated on the cited support page 2 years

These are warranty terms for the products listed on SanDisk’s support page, not general SD-card lifespans. Check the current terms for your exact model and location before relying on coverage. Kingston’s endurance-card material describes the use case, but no comparable warranty term is stated in the cited guide.

Can you check how much life is left?

Do not assume a consumer card provides a trustworthy remaining-life meter. SanDisk’s industrial-card white paper says consumer-grade cards do not have a defined health-monitoring register for reporting remaining endurance. That statement concerns the products and market discussed in that paper; it is not proof that every card has identical features. Without a model-specific supported diagnostic, a warning-free card cannot be treated as a guarantee of remaining service life.

Care for a card and protect the files separately

SanDisk recommends reading and writing to a card every year, formatting it in the camera, using a card reader, leaving 10% to 20% of capacity free, keeping it in a protective anti-static case, and archiving cards when full. These are that manufacturer’s recommendations, not a universal guarantee against failure.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
  • Back up important photos and videos somewhere else before formatting or reusing a card. Never format the only copy of files you need.
  • Archive a full card rather than keeping the only copy in a device or drawer.
  • Follow your device maker’s instructions for formatting and card compatibility.
  • SanDisk advises against using the same card in different camera bodies and against using a microSD adapter in a full-size SD camera slot; treat these as its product-care recommendations.

SanDisk’s memory-card best practices page explains these care suggestions. Keeping space free and handling a card carefully may help avoid problems, but neither practice turns it into a safe long-term archive.
