Your Router’s Guest Network Can Solve 4 Problems That Have Nothing to Do With Guests

Your router’s guest Wi-Fi can do more than host visitors: use it as a boundary for selected smart-home products, temporary connections, or devices that do not need access to your local network.

A router’s guest network can be useful even when nobody is visiting. It creates a separate Wi-Fi connection that, depending on your router’s mode and settings, can give devices internet access while restricting their access to your trusted home network. That makes it a practical boundary for certain smart devices, temporary connections, and household use—but not a universal security guarantee.

1. Separate selected smart-home devices

Smart-home products such as cameras, plugs, speakers, and appliances may not receive the same attention to security as your phone or computer. NETGEAR recommends putting guests or IoT devices on a separate network for this reason: NETGEAR’s guest Wi-Fi guidance describes the potential security difference between IoT products and personal devices.

If your router offers both a guest network and a dedicated IoT network, check the manufacturer’s guidance before choosing. ASUS, for example, documents a distinct IoT Network feature intended to isolate smart-home devices and manage their Wi-Fi separately: ASUS IoT Network support.

Before moving a device, check whether it needs to communicate with a phone, hub, or other devices on your main network. A boundary that blocks local communication may also break useful features such as app control. Test the device after moving it, and adjust local-access settings if your router provides them.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

2. Keep untrusted or temporary devices off your main Wi-Fi

A guest network can give a visitor—or another device you do not fully trust—internet access without handing out your main Wi-Fi password. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends guest Wi-Fi for visitors and untrusted devices in its Wi-Fi and router security guidance. Microsoft also describes guest networks as useful for non-essential smart devices and notes that isolation is common, but not universal: Microsoft’s guest network overview.

This can be useful for short-term or uncertain connections, but confirm what your router actually isolates. Some guest networks restrict access to the home network; others may allow selected devices or local resources. Do not assume the word “guest” alone guarantees a particular boundary.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

3. Set a simple access limit for household devices

If you need a basic way to pause internet access for a group of devices, placing them on a guest network can make one switch affect that group rather than your main Wi-Fi. A recent TechRadar example describes turning guest Wi-Fi off at bedtime.

Some systems also offer activation durations. TP-Link documents selectable guest-network durations for Deco: Deco guest network setup and settings. Controls vary by product, so check your router’s app or manual for scheduling or duration options. Disabling guest Wi-Fi affects every device assigned to it, and this group-level workaround is not a substitute for parental controls that manage individual devices or activity.

  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

4. Limit a TV or appliance’s access to your local devices

A connected television or appliance may need internet access without needing to see your computers, printers, or network storage. A guest network can provide that separation when the router blocks guest devices from reaching local resources. The potential benefit here is narrower local-network access—not a promise that the manufacturer cannot collect viewing or usage data.

Check the device’s requirements before moving it. Some TVs rely on a phone app, local media server, or another device on the home network; isolation may prevent those features from working.

What guest-network isolation actually means

“Guest network” can describe more than one behavior. A router may isolate guest devices from the main home network, block guests from communicating with one another, or offer controls for local access. These behaviors depend on the router and its operating mode.

For example, TP-Link says Deco automatically isolates the guest and main networks in Router mode. In Access Point (AP) mode, an “Allow Local Access” setting determines whether guest devices can reach local resources. See TP-Link’s Deco guest network documentation for the product-specific details. Microsoft notes that most guest networks isolate connected devices from each other, but some allow users to specify devices to share; that behavior should be verified rather than assumed.

Isolation can also cut off legitimate uses. Access-point or client isolation may prevent a device from reaching a printer or streaming to another device on the same Wi-Fi. Microsoft discusses these kinds of connection limits in its guest network overview.

Check these settings before moving devices

  1. Open your router’s app or manual. Find the guest Wi-Fi settings and confirm the device’s current operating mode, such as Router or AP mode. Setting names and available controls vary by manufacturer.
  2. Check access to the main network and local resources. Look for guest isolation, “Allow Local Access,” or similar controls. Confirm whether the setting affects access to computers, storage, printers, or hubs.
  3. Check whether guest devices can communicate with one another. Do not assume client isolation is enabled simply because the network is called a guest network.
  4. Move one device and test its normal functions. Check its internet connection and any app, hub, printer, casting, or local-control features it depends on.
  5. Look for duration or scheduling controls if needed. If you plan to use the network as a household access limit, verify whether it can be scheduled and remember that turning it off disconnects every device on it.

A separate network is one layer of risk reduction, not a replacement for router and device firmware updates, strong Wi-Fi security, or account protections. Guest networking alone does not establish that internet-based tracking or manufacturer data collection is prevented, nor does it guarantee that every path between network segments is blocked.
