Your Proxmox VM Is Probably Emulating Hardware That Hasn’t Existed for Decades

An i440fx Proxmox VM is not running on a 1996 computer. It is using QEMU’s compatibility-focused virtual motherboard model. Here is what the label means, how Q35 differs, and how to migrate safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Proxmox VE virtual machine reports i440fx, it is presenting a virtual Intel 440FX-era motherboard, not revealing the age of your physical server. QEMU uses that machine model as a compatibility contract: the guest operating system sees a particular motherboard, buses and devices even when the host runs a current Xeon, EPYC, Core or Ryzen processor.

What the i440fx label actually means

Proxmox presents each VM through a QEMU machine type. That machine type defines the virtual motherboard and device topology that the guest can detect. The familiar i440fx model emulates Intel’s 440FX PCI bridge with a PIIX3 ISA bridge and period-style peripherals such as legacy VGA, IDE, floppy, serial and PCI/ISA devices.

Intel’s physical 440FX PCIset dates to May 1996. Seeing “i440FX” therefore points to a 1990s chipset design, but it does not mean your host contains a 1996 motherboard or that the VM is using a 1996-era processor. The label identifies the emulated platform presented to the guest.

Why QEMU preserves such an old virtual platform

QEMU machine types are versioned. The project introduced versioned definitions such as pc-i440fx-2.8 and pc-q35-2.8 in release 2.8.0, then retained earlier definitions so a guest could migrate between QEMU versions while seeing a stable set of virtual hardware.

  • UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.

That stability matters because the machine type affects more than a description in the management interface. It can determine PCI bus numbering, which storage controllers exist, firmware interactions and how devices are enumerated. Snapshots, backups and live migration all become harder to reason about if the guest’s virtual hardware changes unexpectedly.

QEMU’s documentation warns that the original machine forms “bake in a lot of assumptions from the days when QEMU was emulating a legacy PC” and are not recommended for modern configurations. Proxmox development notes also warn that very old machine versions can eventually be deprecated or removed. Treat the machine type and its version as part of the VM’s compatibility metadata, not as cosmetic text.

What Q35 changes

Q35 is another virtual motherboard family. Its physical counterpart, Intel’s Q35 Express chipset, was announced in October 2007 and included support for VT-d and ICH9 variants. In QEMU and Proxmox, Q35 provides a newer topology with a virtual PCIe bus.

Bus topology Conventional PCI and legacy devices Virtual PCIe bus is available
PCIe passthrough Not Proxmox’s documented choice for PCIe passthrough Proxmox documents PCIe passthrough with q35
Best fit Existing guests tied to legacy controllers and stable compatibility New PCIe-oriented VMs, after driver and boot testing
Lifecycle Old machine versions can be deprecated Versioned q35 models also require lifecycle tracking

Should you change an existing VM to q35?

Usually, not merely because i440fx looks old. If the guest is stable, uses legacy PCI or IDE assumptions and does not need PCIe passthrough or a virtual IOMMU, keeping its current machine type is often the lower-risk choice. The chipset name does not establish a performance problem, and there is no published universal performance gain from switching.

Q35 is the more appropriate starting point for a new VM that needs a PCIe topology, PCIe device passthrough or Intel vIOMMU. Proxmox documentation ties those capabilities to q35. That is a capability and topology decision, not an automatic speed upgrade.

How to change machine types without losing bootability

  1. Record the current value. Inspect the VM’s configured machine type and exact version in Proxmox and save it somewhere outside the VM configuration. You need the original value for rollback.
  2. Identify dependencies. Check which storage and network controllers the guest uses, whether its firmware expects a particular device layout, and whether passthrough or vIOMMU is actually required.
  3. Take a tested backup. A backup that has never been restored is not a rollback plan. Verify that you can recover the VM before changing its virtual motherboard.
  4. Change the machine type while the VM is powered off. Treat this as a hardware migration, not a live cosmetic edit.
  5. Perform a cold-boot test. Confirm that the guest detects its boot disk, network interface and any passed-through devices. Check driver loading and device names, because enumeration can change with the topology.
  6. Revert if necessary. If the guest does not boot or loses a device, restore the recorded machine type and investigate drivers, controller selection and firmware assumptions before trying again.
  7. Pin and document a version. For long-lived snapshots or migrations, record the selected i440fx or q35 version so future QEMU or Proxmox upgrades do not silently change the guest-visible hardware contract.

Why a machine-type change can stop a VM from booting

A different virtual motherboard can expose a disk through another controller, assign devices to different PCI locations or alter firmware-visible hardware. Operating systems may then fail to find the boot device, load the wrong storage driver or rename network interfaces. Those symptoms do not mean the virtual disk is necessarily damaged; they often indicate that the guest is seeing a different hardware arrangement.

The practical answer

i440fx is a 1996-era virtual chipset model preserved for compatibility. Q35 represents a newer, 2007-era virtual chipset family with PCIe-oriented capabilities. Keep i440fx when compatibility is the priority and the VM is working; choose q35 for new PCIe, passthrough or Intel vIOMMU designs; and change an existing VM only as a planned hardware migration with backups and boot tests.
