On supported Pixels, the 80% charge limit can do more than cap the battery: a recent hands-on report found that some phones draw wired power to keep running after reaching the limit, rather than continuing to charge the battery. Google describes the setting as a way to help extend battery lifespan; it does not officially guarantee bypass charging on every Pixel or in every situation.
How to set your Pixel’s charging limit to 80%
Open Settings > Battery and Charging > Charging Optimization > Use Charging Optimization > Limit to 80%. Menu labels and availability can vary by Pixel model and software version, so check your phone’s Charging Optimization screen if the path differs. Google confirms the 80% option and says it is intended to help extend battery lifespan. Google’s battery guidance

No accessory is needed to enable the setting. Once it is on, the phone usually stops charging at 80%, though it may charge to 100% every tenth cycle to keep its capacity readings accurate.

In an October 1, 2026 hands-on report, Android Authority’s Shimul Sood observed a Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro XL drawing power from a wired source after reaching 80%, while the battery remained at the limit. The report included wired power-bank use. That can be useful if you keep using the phone while it is plugged in, such as for gaming or messaging. Android Authority’s report

This is a reported observation on those tested phones, not a Google guarantee or a result independently verified across Pixel models. The behavior was not observed with wireless charging. Nor is the 80% setting an on-demand bypass switch: in the report’s example, a phone at 40% kept charging until it reached 80%.
Choose between the 80% limit and Adaptive Charging
| Setting | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Limit to 80% | Caps routine charging at 80%; Google says this prioritizes long-term battery health. A wired bypass-style effect has been reported on specific recent Pixels. | You typically finish the day with charge remaining, or use the phone while connected to wired power and can accept less battery reserve when unplugged. |
| Adaptive Charging | Learns charging habits and delays reaching a full charge until nearer the expected unplug time. | You charge overnight and want a full battery in the morning. |
Google calls the 80% option ideal if you usually end the day with some charge left. If you need a longer-lasting full charge for a particular day, turn off the limit. Google explains both charging options

Why an 80% limit may not always stop at 80%
A Pixel with the limit enabled may charge to 100% once every tenth cycle to maintain accurate capacity readings. That is an intentional calibration exception, not necessarily a sign that the setting failed. Google defines a charge cycle cumulatively: using the equivalent of 50% of capacity and recharging, then using another 50% and recharging, adds one cycle—not two.

Google’s 2026 support guidance gives different design targets by model family: Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold are designed to retain up to 80% of initial capacity for about 800 charge cycles; Pixel 8a and later are designed for about 1,000 cycles. These are manufacturer design figures, not a forecast for an individual phone. Google says actual battery life depends on use and other factors, and recommends charging in a cool environment around 25°C (78°F). Google’s Pixel battery guidance
