For many drivers, the most familiar in-car apps—maps, music, messages and voice assistants—come from a smartphone displayed through the car, not from software installed in the vehicle. That shift does not make the car’s own software irrelevant: the vehicle still supplies the screen, controls, connectivity and vehicle-specific functions. The future is less “phone instead of car” than a closer partnership between the two.
Phone projection and built-in infotainment are different systems
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto use a connected phone to bring compatible apps and features to a vehicle display. The car provides the hardware and the phone supplies much of the experience. Google describes Android Auto as bringing useful apps from an Android phone to a car screen.

Google built-in is a different architecture: Google technology and services are incorporated into a vehicle’s infotainment system, and Google says a phone is optional. It should not be confused with Android Auto, even though both are associated with Google. Google’s 2025 explanation of the two experiences makes the distinction explicit.
How far can a smartphone-centered system reach?
CarPlay uses the car’s hardware
Apple describes CarPlay as a way to use an iPhone for directions, messages and music through supported vehicle hardware. Depending on the car, it can include wireless connectivity, Siri, and route guidance on an instrument cluster or head-up display. Those capabilities are not universal: they depend on the vehicle’s implementation. Apple’s CarPlay overview lists the supported experience and features.

Apple’s developer documentation identifies permitted CarPlay app categories such as audio, communication, navigation, EV charging and fueling, parking, driving tasks and quick food ordering. Apps use car-oriented templates, and availability is subject to Apple’s category and entitlement rules. Apple’s CarPlay developer documentation describes those constraints.
CarPlay Ultra blends phone and vehicle information
CarPlay Ultra extends beyond a center-screen app interface. Apple says it can provide content across driver displays, including gauges, and combine iPhone content such as maps and media with car information such as tire pressure and driver-assistance information. Selected vehicle functions may be controlled onscreen, with physical controls or through Siri. It still relies on the iPhone; Apple says driving features continue to be powered by the vehicle’s built-in system.

That shared design matters: deeper integration does not mean the phone replaces the vehicle’s own systems. In its May 15, 2025 announcement, Apple said CarPlay Ultra was available for new Aston Martin orders in the United States and Canada, and specified an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later at that time. Availability is specific to vehicle, market, device and software version; check Apple’s CarPlay information and the automaker for current details.
Android Auto is evolving, while built-in software also expands
Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement described an Android Auto redesign, video while parked on supported vehicles, Gemini functions and new apps for Google built-in. These are announced features and staged rollouts, not a guarantee that every feature is already available in every compatible car. Google ties availability to supported vehicles and apps. What the reach figures do—and do not—show
Google reported more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars in both its May 2025 and May 2026 posts. In 2025, it said Google built-in was available in more than 50 car models; in 2026, it reported more than 100 models from 16 brands. These are Google’s company-published figures, not independent adoption surveys or counts of vehicles actually on the road. Model availability is not the same as installed fleet size.

How to decide what matters in your next car
There is no evidence here establishing one architecture as the universal winner on safety, privacy, satisfaction or ownership cost. Compare the actual vehicle and phone combination you expect to use:
- Phone dependence: CarPlay and Android Auto require a compatible phone to provide their phone-centered experience. Google says a phone is optional for Google built-in.
- Compatibility: Confirm make, model, model year, country, phone and operating-system version. Feature support can vary even among vehicles using the same platform.
- Integration: Find out whether the system is limited to the main display or also reaches gauges, a head-up display and selected vehicle controls. The automaker’s implementation determines the available functions.
- Updates: Ask which features depend on phone software, vehicle software or a staged rollout. An announced feature may require a particular vehicle or app.
- Interaction: Check the functions you care about using voice, touchscreen, steering-wheel or other physical controls. Support varies by car and platform.
For a specific vehicle, use the automaker’s compatibility details and the platform’s current availability information rather than assuming that a feature shown in an announcement applies to every trim or market.
The car still matters, even when the phone supplies the apps
Phone-based interfaces give drivers a familiar route to their preferred apps, while built-in systems can operate without a phone and may be integrated more directly with the vehicle. The direction is not a clean replacement of one by the other: CarPlay Ultra illustrates a combined approach, and vehicle-native infotainment remains an active path.
Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers described Ultra as a joint effort with automakers, saying, “With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers, we are reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent.” That is Apple’s stated aim, not independent evidence of better safety or satisfaction.
