Build when proprietary bidding, data use, workflow or marketplace behavior is central to the business and you can staff the engineering and operations that come with owning it. License when a vendor’s platform already covers the capabilities you need and you want a controlled or branded product without writing the core system yourself. Rent, meaning a managed buying service or a seat on an existing buyer platform, when speed and access to existing buying infrastructure matter more than owning the platform.
The decision turns on three questions: which functions you must own, which marketplace access you can actually obtain, and who will run the system after launch.

Name the role you are actually buying
These terms are used loosely in vendor marketing, and a single company can cover more than one role. The basic definitions below come from IAB’s data ecosystem overview and Amazon Ads’ guide to ad exchanges.

A DSP aggregates media buying for advertisers and agencies. It is the buyer’s side of automated trading. When you evaluate one, the questions that matter are which exchanges and inventory sources it can reach, and whether you own the bidder logic and the data it uses.

Ad exchange
An exchange facilitates auction-based buying and selling of publisher inventory. It runs the auction rules that decide which bid wins. When you evaluate one, ask who is eligible to buy, which auction rules apply, and what it charges on each transaction.
Ad network
An ad network aggregates publisher inventory and sells it to advertisers. Its services may overlap with exchange and DSP functions, so a company that calls itself a network may also run auctions or provide buying tools. Ask which of those functions it performs for you, in writing.

What OpenRTB covers and what it leaves to you
OpenRTB is an interoperability standard for real-time bidding communications. IAB defines real-time bidding as transacting an individual impression through an on-the-spot auction, and OpenRTB was created as a common API protocol for automated digital media trading (IAB, OpenRTB). In the documented model, a supply source such as an exchange sends bid requests to demand sources, receives their bids, applies auction rules, selects a winner, and communicates the outcome. The OpenRTB 3.0 specification sets out the request, response, auction-outcome and billing-notice context for that exchange.

Rank #3
- inventory or publisher supply;
- commercial access to a marketplace, which depends on onboarding with that marketplace;
- a production bidder, since your team or vendor still has to build the bidding logic;
- ongoing operational support, such as uptime monitoring and partner troubleshooting.
IAB Tech Lab’s standards page names OpenRTB v2.6-202309 and lists the changes in that release. Check that page or your integration partner for any newer release, and confirm which version and extensions each integration requires, because specifications and extensions change.
Market access is a separate question from technology
A working bidder is necessary for real-time buying but not sufficient. Google’s Authorized Buyers documentation describes buyers acting as DSPs, trading desks or ad networks that can buy inventory, and explains that a real-time bidder connects to the marketplace to receive bid requests. Each marketplace relationship carries its own eligibility and onboarding. A build or license path means you qualify or negotiate for that access, with or without the vendor’s help. A rented seat may inherit the provider’s existing access, subject to its account eligibility. Confirm which marketplaces you can reach before you commit to a technical path.

Compare build, license and rent
| Factor | Build | License | Rent or managed service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Proprietary bidding, data use, workflow or marketplace behavior is what differentiates the product | A vendor platform covers the required capabilities and you need a controlled or branded product | You need buying capability or market access quickly and accept less platform ownership |
| Who owns the platform | You | The vendor, under license terms | The provider |
| Integration effort | Highest, because every component is yours | Moderate, depending on the vendor’s APIs and documentation | Lowest where the provider already has the connections you need |
| Control of bidder logic, data and workflows | Full, subject to your own governance | Set by customization and data-access terms | Limited to what the provider exposes; check export rights |
| Marketplace access | You qualify or negotiate for each source | Depends on the vendor’s relationships and your eligibility | Inherited from the provider, subject to account eligibility |
| Reliability and latency | Yours, including operations | Shared, governed by the contract’s service terms | Mostly the provider’s, but your campaigns depend on its uptime |
| Fee visibility | Internal costs plus any third-party components you buy | License fees plus usage terms; request a full breakdown | Service and platform fees; request a full breakdown |
| Exit flexibility | Components are yours, but migrating them costs engineering time | Depends on minimums, notice periods and data export | Depends on whether workflows and data can be transferred |
Build when the bidder itself is the product
Building fits when the bidding logic, data use, workflow or marketplace behavior is what makes your offering different, and when the cost of owning those functions is justified by that difference. It also requires a team that will keep the system running after launch.
Build fits when:
- a vendor’s standard product would not replicate the proprietary function you need;
- you can fund engineering for integrations, standards upgrades and security on a continuing basis;
- you have a credible path to the marketplace relationships each integration requires.
Build failure modes:
- Operations are underbudgeted. Latency, uptime and partner incidents fall on your team, because no vendor carries them for you.
- Standards drift. An unplanned OpenRTB version change or partner extension becomes an integration defect.
- The build is too wide. Owning a full DSP is often more than a single proprietary function requires.
Deployment for teams running their own stack
AWS publishes a reference architecture, Guidance for AdTech Private Network on AWS, that places DSP and SSP deployments in the same AWS Region and uses AWS PrivateLink to route RTB traffic over a private connection. Treat it as one vendor’s example of a deployment pattern, not as evidence that it is the best or least expensive design for your workload. The pattern settles where components run and how traffic travels. It does not address integration, onboarding or operating work.
Best Value
- VLAN Network Segregation: This router includes five preconfigured VLANs that isolate IoT devices, guest users, and work systems into separate, secure networks. Each LAN port and every WiFi SSID can be assigned to a VLAN, giving you complete control over how traffic flows inside your home.
- Dual VPN Client and Server Support: The router works as both a VPN client and a VPN server, supporting OpenVPN, IPsec, and WireGuard. You can route selected VLANs through a VPN while keeping others on your regular ISP connection, giving each device group the exact level of privacy it needs.
- Full WiFi 6 on Both Bands: With dual-band WiFi 6 support, the router delivers modern wireless performance across 2.4GHz b/g/n/ax and 5GHz a/n/ac/ax. It improves capacity, stability, and speed while remaining compatible with older devices, making it ideal for busy homes with many connections. Wi-Fi Mesh is available after firmware update.
- High-Performance Hardware Architecture: Powered by the IPQ6000 quad-core ARM processor at 1.2GHz, along with 128MB flash, 256MB RAM, and hardware NAT acceleration, the router handles multitasking, streaming, VPN traffic, and VLAN isolation smoothly without slowing your network.
- Flexible and Powerful Parental Controls: You can use trusted services like OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, and Cloudflare for filtering, then add custom block lists, allow lists, and schedules. The router includes defenses against common bypass attempts, letting families create rules that match each user. Best of all, it's subscription free!
License when a platform covers the core need
Licensing keeps the core platform with the vendor while you control the product built on it, and, depending on the terms, the data it generates. The question is whether the vendor’s capabilities match your required functions, and whether the license lets you change what does not.
License fits when:
- the vendor’s platform already supports the bidding, workflow and reporting you need, with customization available for the rest;
- you need a branded or controlled product rather than a generic buyer seat;
- the data-access terms let you retrieve and move your own campaign and performance data.
Watch for:
- contract minimums and exit terms that lock you in before you have tested the platform against your requirements;
- customization limits that push you into workarounds for core behavior;
- support and capacity commitments that should be written into service levels before signing, not assumed from a product demo.
Rent a seat or managed service when speed and access come first
Renting a DSP seat or using a managed buying service gives you existing market access and workflow with the least platform ownership. It fits when the question is how quickly you can buy inventory, not whether you must own the bidder.
Quick Recap
Rent fits when:
- you need to start buying soon and the provider already has the access you require;
- your team lacks capacity for integrations and day-to-day operations;
- you are still deciding whether a channel justifies deeper investment.
Watch for:
- account eligibility, since the provider’s approval determines which marketplaces and inventory you can reach;
- provider dependence, because campaign logic and data sit inside its tools, so confirm export and exit rights before you build workflows on them;
- stacked fees, since service and platform charges can accumulate.
A selection process in seven steps
- Write the business job in one sentence. Name the outcome for advertisers, publishers or your own customers, and the metric that shows it has happened.
- List the functions you must own. Bidding logic, data use, workflow and marketplace behavior are the usual candidates. Anything not on the list is a candidate for licensing or renting.
- Check existing options first. Confirm whether an existing buyer platform or managed service already supplies the market access and workflow you need. If it does, start with a narrow rent or license scope.
- Scope any build narrowly. If proprietary bidding or exchange functions remain essential, build around those functions and their integrations, and license or rent everything else.
- Get a full fee breakdown. IAB Europe’s supply-chain transparency guide raises whether costs are included in clearing prices or appended to them, so a headline platform rate can understate what you pay.
- Confirm technical requirements in writing. Confirm the OpenRTB version and any extensions each partner requires, as described above.
- Write exit terms into the contract. Cover data export, transfer of workflows, notice periods and minimum commitments.
What public sources do not settle
- Pricing and terms. The sources cited here do not publish comparable vendor pricing, contract minimums or implementation timelines. The table describes relative effort only, so any cost or schedule comparison has to come from written proposals from candidate providers.
- Build-versus-buy performance. No dated, independent benchmark compares the three models on cost, reliability or latency. The choice rests on functional fit and operating capacity, not on a measured advantage.
- The IAB Europe guide’s date. The file is named as a 2024 v2 PDF, but its cover metadata should be checked before you cite a publication year.
