Your Old Router Can Become a Wi-Fi Access Point, File Share, or WireGuard Server

A wired access point is the most practical second life for many old routers. Wireless repeating, USB file sharing and WireGuard require model-specific support.

Yes—an old router can sometimes take on a second job, but it will not necessarily support all three: adding Wi-Fi as a wired access point is the most broadly useful option, while a wireless repeater, USB file share, or WireGuard server depends on the exact hardware and firmware. Before changing anything, identify the router’s precise model and hardware revision, then check what its current firmware supports.

Check the router before choosing a new job

Find the model and hardware revision on the device label or in its administration page. If you are considering OpenWrt, look up that exact revision in the OpenWrt supported-device database and follow the device-specific installation guidance. Similar-looking revisions can have different support; do not flash an image just because it names the same product family.

OpenWrt’s general hardware guidance describes 8 MB of flash as the bare minimum and 16 MB as better; for RAM, it describes 64 MB as the minimum and 128 MB as better. These figures are guidance, not a guarantee that a router supports a particular release, radio feature, USB storage, or package. Available flash space, device support and the installation procedure also matter. See OpenWrt’s supported-device guidance.

Use it as a wired Wi-Fi access point

If you can run Ethernet from your main router to the old one, a bridged access point (often called a “dumb AP”) is the clearest way to add Wi-Fi coverage to the same local network. The main router continues handling routing, firewall, DHCP and DNS; the secondary device bridges its Wi-Fi and LAN to that network. Clients connecting to the access point get their network settings from the existing DHCP server.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  1. Check for an access-point mode. If the old router’s stock firmware offers AP mode, use its vendor-specific instructions. Menu names and behavior vary by model and firmware.
  2. If configuring a bridged AP, connect LAN to LAN. Run Ethernet from a LAN port on the main router to a LAN port on the secondary router, following the setup guide for the firmware you use. OpenWrt documents this topology in its bridged access point guidance.
  3. Give the secondary router a reachable address. Set an address on the main router’s subnet, either statically or through DHCP, according to the chosen setup. Avoid an address conflict with another device.
  4. Prevent competing network services. In a bridged AP arrangement, disable the secondary router’s DHCP service. Leave routing and the other network services to the main router or another device that already provides them.

The exact settings depend on the router’s firmware. Do not assume a stock interface uses OpenWrt’s labels or follows precisely the same setup process.

Use it as a wireless repeater only if the devices support the arrangement

Without an Ethernet uplink, a second router may be able to connect to the main Wi-Fi network and serve nearby clients. That is not a universal feature: it depends on the old router’s radio and driver, the upstream access point and the chosen network mode. OpenWrt documents relayd for some setups where the upstream router is not OpenWrt or lacks preferred WDS or 802.11s mesh support. Its guidance notes that some wireless drivers do not support ordinary Layer 2 bridging in client mode.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Check the exact configuration rather than assuming the result will be a transparent bridge or provide seamless roaming. If you can use Ethernet, a wired AP avoids many of the compatibility questions inherent in a wireless uplink.

Use its USB port for a basic network file share

A router with USB is not automatically a NAS. The firmware must support the storage device and its filesystem, detect and mount it, and run a file-sharing service such as ksmbd or Samba. OpenWrt’s guides explain the prerequisites and setup workflow: USB storage and network-attached storage.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

For a compatible router, drive and firmware, the result may be a convenient basic share on the home network. Do not assume it will offer the features, speed or reliability of a dedicated NAS. Performance depends on the router’s CPU and memory, storage connection and device, filesystem, file-sharing software, Ethernet link and other load. Check the drive’s power needs too: some drives may draw more than the router’s USB port can supply.

Consider WireGuard only after confirming device support

Some OpenWrt-capable routers may be suitable for a WireGuard server, but the fact that a device is a router—or that a product mentions VPN—does not establish that it can host one. First verify that the exact model and hardware revision support a current OpenWrt build and have enough available resources. Then use current, model-appropriate WireGuard instructions; the OpenWrt documentation index includes a guide titled “WireGuard multi-client server automated.”
