Your Old Printer Might Stop Working on Windows 11—but There’s a Workaround

An older printer may still work in Windows 11. Check for a compatible driver first, then try the legacy Add Printer Driver Wizard as a last resort.

An older printer can run into driver-compatibility problems after a Windows 11 upgrade or update, but that does not mean Windows 11 has stopped supporting every old printer. First try Windows Update or the printer maker’s official driver page. If neither provides a suitable driver, Windows 11 has a legacy Add Printer Driver Wizard that may help—though Microsoft describes it as a last resort, not a guaranteed fix.

Why an older printer may stop working

A printer can fail to print after a Windows upgrade or update if its driver is not designed for the version of Windows installed. Whether a fix is available depends on the exact printer model and whether a compatible driver exists. Microsoft does not provide a failure or success rate for older printers on Windows 11. Microsoft’s printer-driver compatibility guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Try these fixes in order

  1. Check the setup. Note the printer’s exact model and your Windows version and system architecture. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected. For a wireless printer, confirm it is on the same network as the PC.
  2. Run Windows’ printer troubleshooter. On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the automated printer troubleshooter. Microsoft’s connection and printing troubleshooting guide explains this option.
  3. Check for a driver through Windows Update. Microsoft recommends Windows Update as a source for printer drivers. Look for the exact printer model and ensure the driver matches your Windows version and system architecture.
  4. Check the printer maker’s official support page. Search by the exact model and look for a driver intended for your Windows version. Do not assume a driver for a similar model or a different processor architecture will work. Microsoft’s driver installation guidance covers these sources.
  5. Remove and add the printer again if needed. Windows supports many printers out of the box and may install a directly connected printer automatically. If yours is not listed, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. If Windows cannot find it, choose the manual-add option. See Microsoft’s instructions for adding or installing a printer.
  6. Use the legacy wizard as a fallback. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Printer server properties > Drivers > Add. Select the PC’s processor architecture, use the wizard’s Windows Update button to refresh the list, then choose the manufacturer and model if they appear.
  7. Print a test page. A driver appearing in the list does not prove that printing works. Send a test page; if the printer is installed but still will not print, follow the printer maker’s troubleshooting guidance or check its driver updates.

What the legacy Add Printer Driver Wizard does—and does not do

The wizard adds a printer driver to Windows; it does not install the printer itself. It assumes the printer is already installed. Microsoft says the wizard should be used only as a last resort and that it might work better for older printers. If your model is missing from the list, or printing still fails, the availability of a compatible driver remains uncertain. Microsoft’s driver guidance documents both the fallback and its limitation.

Which driver option should you try?

Option When to use it What to check
Windows Update First choice for finding a printer driver, as recommended by Microsoft. Look for the exact model and a driver that matches your Windows version and processor architecture.
Printer manufacturer’s official driver page Also recommended; useful for locating a model-specific driver. Confirm the model and Windows version. Avoid substituting a driver for a similar model.
Legacy Add Printer Driver Wizard Last-resort attempt if the recommended sources do not provide a suitable driver. Refresh the list with the wizard’s Windows Update button, choose the correct architecture, and verify the result by printing a test page.
