Your Files Don’t Need to Leave the Device: Building Browser-Local Tools

Browser-local tools can process selected files without uploading them—but the API, permissions, storage, browser support, and network behavior all matter.

You can build a web tool that reads and transforms a user-selected file entirely in the browser, without uploading the file as part of that operation. But “processed locally” is not proof that an app sends nothing: analytics, third-party scripts, remote services, or an upload feature may still transmit file contents or information derived from them. The right design depends on whether users need to select a file, edit it in place, work with a folder, or keep temporary data inside the app.

Can a website edit files on your computer?

Yes, within a user-directed and browser-controlled access model. A website can let someone select a file and read its contents, or—where supported—use the File System Access API to open or save files and directories after the user grants permission. It does not get unrestricted access to the computer’s filesystem. The API is available only in secure contexts, such as HTTPS pages, and support varies by browser and method. MDN’s File System API documentation describes the API and its security context requirements.

Chrome for Developers summarizes the capability this way: “The File System Access API allows web apps to read or save changes directly to files and folders on the user’s device.” That description is not a promise of universal browser support or permission-free access. Chrome’s documentation reports support on most Chromium browsers across Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, and Android; check the exact browser, version, and method your product targets.

How do you process a file without uploading it?

For a straightforward workflow, have the user choose a file, read it through the browser’s File API, and run the transformation in the page. The selected file is represented as browser-readable file data; choosing it does not itself require sending the content to a server. If the app cannot write back to the original file, generate an output the user can download. MDN’s File API guide covers selected-file access and reading.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  1. Ask the user to choose a file. Limit the selection to what the current task needs rather than requesting broad access up front.
  2. Validate the input. Check size, actual content, and supported format. A filename extension or declared MIME type is not reliable proof of what the file contains.
  3. Process it in the browser. Keep the transformation on-device if that is the intended privacy property; avoid sending content or file-derived data to a server unless the workflow clearly discloses that behavior.
  4. Offer an explicit result path. Let the user download or export the result, or request appropriate write access if supported and needed.

A “no upload” claim should describe the whole implementation, not just where the main transformation runs. Network requests from analytics, embedded libraries, remote APIs, or other scripts can change what leaves the device. Inspect the app’s network behavior and dependencies, disclose any analytics or remote processing, and avoid claiming the app is offline or wholly private unless those broader claims are true.

Which browser storage or file API fits the job?

Approach Data and workflow Permission and availability Persistence and user control
File selection with the File API User-selected files for browser-side reading and processing; provide a download or export for results. The user selects the file. The File API is distinct from the extended File System Access capabilities; see MDN’s File API documentation. The app should explain how the user gets the result. Do not imply that selecting a file grants in-place write access.
File System Access API Can open or save chosen files and work with directories in supported browsers. User permission is part of the access model, and a secure context is required. Chrome documents support on most Chromium browsers across several operating systems, not every browser or method: Chrome for Developers. Explain whether the original is changed or a copy is saved; handle denied or revoked permission and read-only access.
Origin Private File System (OPFS) Origin-private storage for app-managed working data, caches, or temporary files; it is not a user-visible folder. Browser-managed rather than a user-selected folder. See MDN’s File System API overview. Browser storage quotas apply. It is not a user-controlled backup, so provide a way to export important results. Further detail: MDN’s OPFS documentation.
File Handling API Lets installed web apps integrate with opening files from the operating system. An additional integration path with a permission prompt, documented by Chrome; it is not a replacement for ordinary file selection or a universally supported capability. Chrome’s File Handling documentation. Tell users how the app handles opened files and what happens when permission is unavailable or declined.

The File System Access API and OPFS solve different problems. Use the former when a user needs to work with files or folders they can identify and manage. Use OPFS when the app needs its own browser-managed working area. Data kept in OPFS is not automatically visible in the user’s folders, and quota limits mean it should not be presented as a dependable substitute for exporting valuable work.

What should a safe and clear file workflow tell users?

  • Scope: Say whether the app will read one selected file, save to a chosen location, or access a directory.
  • Timing: Request access when the user initiates the task, not before it is relevant.
  • Write behavior: Make clear whether the original changes, whether saving happens in place, and how to export a separate copy.
  • Permission failures: Provide a useful fallback when permission is denied or revoked—for example, process a selected file and offer a download where that works.
  • Input handling: Treat file contents and metadata as untrusted. The W3C File API security and privacy discussion addresses risks including malicious selections, system-sensitive files, and files changing after selection. Avoid rendering untrusted active content without safeguards.
  • Data leaving the page: Explain any upload, remote processing, or analytics that receives file contents or derived information. A local transformation alone does not establish that no such transmissions occur.

How should you check browser support?

Start from the exact method in the workflow—reading a selected file, writing to a chosen file, enumerating a directory, using OPFS, or handling files through an installed app. Then verify that method against the target browsers and versions, rather than treating “File System Access API support” as one blanket yes-or-no property. Chrome’s “most Chromium browsers” statement is useful for setting expectations, but it is not a complete compatibility matrix for all engines, operating systems, versions, or API methods. Provide a fallback such as file selection plus download when direct access is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also test the permission states and the complete data path: successful access, denied or revoked access, read-only situations, export recovery, and any network requests made while processing. Browser support and storage quotas can change; check current documentation for the environments you intend to support.
