First, confirm that the 20 KB limit applies to the photo field—not to a signature or another upload. Exam portals set their own rules, and the required size may be a range rather than a maximum. Follow the current instructions for your exact exam and application cycle; then crop or resize the image to the stated dimensions, save it in the required format, and check its file size and preview before uploading.
Check what the 20 KB limit applies to
Look at the label beside the upload field in the official exam instructions. A 20 KB limit can refer to a signature, while the photo has a different limit. For example, the DGCA Pariksha FAQ sets a maximum of 70 KB for its scanned colour photo and 20 KB for its scanned signature. Those are requirements for that portal, not a general exam-form standard. Other forms differ too. An IBPS recruitment application guide for the 2025 cycle lists a 20–50 KB photo range and a 10–20 KB signature range. Record the full image requirements
Before editing, note the specifications for the exact field. Check all of the following, not just the file-size limit:

- File type: for example, JPEG or JPG if that is what the instructions require.
- File-size limits: both the minimum and maximum, if the form gives a range.
- Dimensions: pixel dimensions or physical measurements, as specified.
- Photo rules: age, background, borders, framing, or other appearance requirements.
- Upload method: whether the portal accepts an image file or captures the photo live.
For its photo, the DGCA Pariksha FAQ specifies JPEG/JPG, 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, a white background without borders, a face occupying about 70% of the image, and a photo not more than three months old. Its 70 KB maximum applies to the scanned colour photo. Use those details only for the DGCA form; a different exam may set different specifications. DGCA Pariksha FAQ

Prepare the image for the portal
- Open the current official instructions for your exam. Confirm that 20 KB is attached to the photo field and check whether the limit is a maximum or part of a range.
- Start with a clear, correctly framed image. If you only have a printed photo, scanning can create a digital image; it is not necessary if you already have a suitable digital file.
- Crop and resize to the specified dimensions. Keep the required framing and background, and make sure the face remains clear. Official form guidance describes cropping and resizing images to meet an application’s requirements. Guidelines for Indian Government Websites, “CH 04 — FORMS”
- Save in the required file type. Do not assume that changing the extension alone converts an image; use an image editor or other suitable method to export it in the format the portal requests.
- Check the saved file’s size and appearance. Confirm it falls within any stated minimum and maximum, then open it to check that the photo still looks clear.
- Upload and inspect the portal preview, if available. Make sure the visible crop and orientation are acceptable before submitting the form.
If the portal rejects the upload
- It is too large: Recheck the dimensions and crop, then reduce the image size while preserving a clear face. Check the saved file again after each change.
- It is too small: If the instructions give a range, the image must meet the minimum as well as the maximum. Make a fresh export from the original image rather than repeatedly editing an already compressed copy.
- The format or dimensions are wrong: Compare the actual saved file and dimensions with the official instructions; renaming a file does not change its format.
- The preview looks wrong: Revisit the crop, orientation, and required framing. Do not submit solely because the file is under the size limit.
- The instructions seem inconsistent: Check the latest official notice or portal guidance for the current application cycle, and use the requirements for the specific upload field.
