Your Crypto Wallet Is Not Your Account: What the App Actually Controls

A crypto wallet app manages access to blockchain assets; it does not necessarily mean you control the keys. Learn how custody, recovery and hardware signing differ.

A crypto wallet app does not hold coins like a physical wallet. Crypto assets are recorded on a blockchain; the app provides a way to manage them. What matters is who controls the keys—or recovery method—that can authorize access. An exchange account and a self-custody wallet may appear under familiar app brands but give control and recovery to different parties.

What a crypto wallet actually controls

Coinbase puts the distinction this way: “Your crypto always lives on the blockchain as a digital record. Your wallet is what gives you the ability to manage it.” The wallet is an interface and a way to access or manage the keys associated with blockchain assets; it is not a container where the assets physically sit.

That makes “wallet” and “account” different concepts. An account may be a login and service relationship with a provider. A wallet may be custodial, with a provider maintaining the keys, or self-custody, where the user controls the keys or recovery mechanism. The app brand alone does not tell you which arrangement applies.

Who controls the keys in a custodial account?

In a custodial setup, a provider maintains the keys needed to access assets held for a customer. Coinbase’s educational material says that crypto bought through a Coinbase.com account is stored in a custodial wallet; its example for customers in the European Economic Area says the customer does not directly hold or control the relevant private keys. Coinbase’s separate legal and help material says keys for its hosted Coinbase.com wallet are maintained by Coinbase and expressly excludes its self-custody app from that page’s scope. These are product- and geography-specific descriptions, not a rule for every Coinbase service or every region.

Coinbase’s general help guide describes an exchange as holding crypto on a user’s behalf. In that arrangement, access recovery typically involves resetting login credentials or contacting the platform. The provider’s role also means it may be able to authorize or restrict transactions under its service rules and applicable requirements. Check the terms and custody disclosures for the precise product and location you use.

What changes with self-custody?

With self-custody, the user controls the private keys or the recovery mechanism that can restore access. The provider generally cannot simply reset the wallet as it could a hosted account. Losing the required recovery information may leave the user unable to regain access, while someone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet’s assets.

Do not assume every self-custody wallet has the same setup. For example, Coinbase Wallet’s documented recovery-phrase wallets use a 12-word phrase, and each phrase wallet has its own independent phrase. Coinbase says it cannot access that phrase or move funds on a user’s behalf. Coinbase Wallet also documents an optional encrypted backup to Google Drive or iCloud protected by a separate password. Those details describe Coinbase Wallet’s options, not a universal wallet standard.

Recovery depends on the product

MetaMask’s guidance says its recovery phrase provides access to the accounts in that wallet and that support cannot restore a lost phrase for the user. It also describes a different recovery arrangement when a user connects Google or Apple: the phrase is encrypted and distributed across five nodes, and account credentials become part of the recovery process. This is MetaMask’s description of its product, not an independent security audit. The practical lesson is to identify the specific recovery path configured in your app rather than assuming all wallets rely on a phrase alone.

  • Who can authorize or restrict transactions? In custody, the provider has operational control over key use and may apply restrictions. In self-custody, signing authority rests with the user or the configured signing mechanism.
  • What happens if recovery information is exposed or lost? Exposure can give another person access; loss can make recovery impossible, depending on the product’s setup.

What a hardware wallet changes—and what it does not

A hardware wallet is an optional physical signer designed to keep keys offline and require the device to authorize transactions. Coinbase’s guide identifies hardware devices as one form of self-custody, and MetaMask advises users with valuable tokens to consider one. Neither source establishes that everyone needs a hardware device.

Offline keys reduce some exposure to an internet-connected computer or phone, but they do not guarantee that a transaction is what you intended. Ledger’s developer documentation describes the risk of a compromised host supplying data for an unintended transaction and explains why a device must ask for user approval rather than blindly signing arbitrary data. Before approving, inspect the transaction details shown by the signer and make sure they match your intent. A confusing prompt or compromised host can still put a user at risk.

How to tell what your app controls

  1. Identify the exact service. Distinguish an exchange or hosted account from a separate wallet app, even if both use the same company name or login.
  2. Find the custody disclosure. Look for whether the provider says it holds the private keys, or whether you control them. Check that the disclosure applies to your product and country.
  3. Read the recovery instructions before relying on the wallet. Find out whether access depends on a recovery phrase, a provider account, an encrypted cloud backup, or another method, and who can restore it.
  4. Check how transactions are approved. Determine whether the provider authorizes transactions or whether you approve them by signing in the app or on a separate device. Review transaction details before confirming.
  5. Protect the recovery method the way the product requires. Keep phrases and backup credentials private, and follow the provider’s instructions. Do not assume a support team can replace a lost phrase.

These checks answer the two questions that matter most: who controls my crypto wallet, and what happens if I lose my recovery phrase? The answer comes from the exact product’s custody and recovery design—not from the word “account,” the app icon, or the company name.
