Yes—Debian is accepting artwork proposals for Debian 14, codenamed Forky. The current submission deadline is 26 November 2026. Artists can propose a wallpaper or other artwork without creating a complete desktop theme.

How to submit a Forky artwork proposal

  1. Create a proposal page under DebianArt/Themes, following the Forky artwork page’s instructions.

  4. If the proposal is selected, provide source files that can be modified using free software.

Artists can discuss ideas on the Debian Desktop mailing list or in the #debian-desktop IRC channel.

What Debian is looking for

Debian’s call describes three usual selection considerations. They are practical guides, not a formula guaranteeing selection:

  • A recognizable Debian connection: The project acknowledges that what feels like “Debian” is subjective, so proposals can interpret that identity in different ways.
  • Integration without core-software patches: A design should work within the release experience without requiring changes to core software. The call notes that elaborate concepts may depend on extensive GTK theming or changes to GDM/GNOME, which can make them difficult to integrate.
  • Clean design for everyday use: The artwork should remain comfortable to look at over time, not just make a strong first impression.

Completeness matters too: include the concept description and license with the proposal, and be prepared to provide modifiable source files if selected.

Where the selected artwork will appear

Release artwork can appear in the installer, boot screen, login screen, and desktop wallpaper. Debian describes it as one of the first things people see when installing or booting the system, so a proposal should suit more than a single preview image.

Deadline, voting, and current proposals

The deadline is 26 November 2026. An earlier call gave 12 September 2026, but Debian announced an extension on 26 September; the current Debian announcement and Forky artwork page show the later date.

The wiki estimates that voting will take place for one to three weeks after submissions close, hopefully closer to one week. That is an estimate, not a confirmed schedule. The page currently lists proposal concepts including Alborz, Aquatis, Beach Day, Cutlery, Fireflies, Spiral Fork, and Orange; being listed does not mean a concept has been selected.
