Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo get the protection you expect from an Android VPN, connect the right VPN, decide whether it should reconnect automatically, and choose what Android should do if the tunnel is unavailable. Then check any per-app exclusions: apps routed outside the VPN may use your regular connection—or lose connectivity if you block traffic that bypasses the VPN.
How do I set up a VPN on Android?
Google’s consumer instructions use Settings → Network and Internet → VPN. If those menus differ on your phone, search Settings for “VPN.” The available steps and labels can vary by device and Android version; Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Google’s Android VPN setup guide covers both saved connections and VPN apps.

- Choose the right VPN. Select the saved VPN profile you intend to use. If you need to add a manual connection, use configuration details from your VPN administrator or service. For an app-based VPN, open the app and follow its setup flow.
- Connect. Confirm that Android shows the VPN indicator. A profile being saved on the phone is not the same as an active connection.
- Review its settings. Open the selected VPN’s settings to check whether Android offers Always-on VPN, a blocking option, or app-specific routing.
On a work-managed phone or work profile, your organization may control the VPN, certificates, or app lists. Ask the administrator before changing settings; some controls may be unavailable or enforced by policy.

If the selected setup offers it, enable Always-on VPN when you want Android to start the VPN service at boot. Android documents always-on support for Android 7.0 and higher, but the setting’s availability depends on the VPN setup and device. Google notes that app-configured VPNs may not show the system Always-on option, so check the VPN app’s own settings as well. Google’s setup guide

Always-on is persistence, not proof that a live tunnel is connected. Android can start the VPN service, but that service must still connect to its gateway. If the connection fails, you may see a persistent notification while it tries to reconnect. Check the VPN app or profile and its connection status rather than assuming the always-on setting means traffic is protected at every moment. Android Developers’ VPN guide
How do I stop Android from connecting without my VPN?
Enable Block connections without VPN if you prefer to prevent network traffic from falling back to the ordinary connection when it does not use the VPN. This is a fail-closed choice: if the VPN is unavailable, traffic that would bypass it is blocked, and affected apps may have no network access. The exact menu path can vary. Google describes the setting in its Android Enterprise VPN guide; Android Developers explains that always-on VPN can block connections that do not use the VPN.

Use this option only if you accept losing connectivity when the VPN is down or when an app is excluded from the tunnel. If an essential app stops connecting after you enable it, check whether the VPN is connected and whether that app is on an allowed or disallowed list.
What do per-app VPN lists change?
Some VPN configurations let you choose which apps use the tunnel. Android supports one list type at a time: an allowed list sends only listed apps through the VPN, while a disallowed list excludes listed apps from it. With exclusions and no blocking rule, excluded apps can use ordinary system networking. If blocking is enabled, excluded apps may lose network access instead. - Test apps after changing a list, especially if traffic outside the VPN is blocked.
Does Android’s VPN setting tell me whether a provider is private?
No. Android’s connection and routing controls determine how traffic uses a VPN; they do not audit a provider’s privacy practices. Google Play policy requires apps using VpnService to document that use in the Play listing and encrypt data from the device to the VPN tunnel endpoint. If an app accesses or collects personal or sensitive user data, the policy also requires prominent in-app disclosure and affirmative consent. These policy requirements do not establish how a particular provider handles data. Google Play’s VpnService policy
