On eligible accounts and app versions, an Android phone may be able to send a Windows PC commands to shut down, restart, sleep, or install updates. The controls are not yet documented as universally available, so a missing button does not necessarily indicate a fault.
What the new phone controls can do
Reports from Android Authority describe Link to Windows controls for shutting down, restarting, and putting a PC to sleep, along with update-related actions. Windows Central found code pointing to the same functions but said Microsoft had not confirmed broad public availability.

That makes this a rollout-dependent feature rather than a guaranteed Phone Link capability. Microsoft’s public requirements pages document the phone-to-PC connection, but do not promise that every connected computer can be powered down remotely.
Sleep has an important limitation. A warning shown in the reported flow says: “After it’s asleep, it will be disconnected from this device. You need to go to your PC to wake it up.” In other words, remote sleep is not the same as remote power-on.

Compatibility and requirements
Microsoft’s documented baseline for Phone Link is:
- An Android phone running Android 10 or later.
- A PC running Windows 11, or Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later.
- Supported Android, Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, and vivo devices. Feature availability can vary by model, region, carrier, and software version.
- The phone and PC connected to the same Wi-Fi network for the best experience.
- Current versions of Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android.

How to pair an Android phone with Phone Link
- Open Phone Link on the Windows PC.
- Choose the Android-phone option and sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use on both devices.
- On the phone, install or open Link to Windows.
- Use the QR-code pairing flow displayed by Phone Link, then approve the requested permissions on the phone.
- Keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network and allow the connection to finish syncing.
- After pairing, look through the available device or power controls in Phone Link. If shutdown, restart, sleep, or update commands are absent, your account, app build, phone model, or rollout status may not include them yet.
Why the shutdown or restart option may be missing
The feature has not reached your account
The reports describe an emerging rollout, not a switch that Microsoft has documented for every user. Updating both apps may help, but it cannot force a server-side or staged release.

Battery restrictions stop Link to Windows
Android battery saver and manufacturer-specific battery optimization can suspend Link to Windows in the background. Microsoft recommends disabling battery optimization for the app when communication is unreliable. The exact menu differs by phone; look under Settings, Apps, Link to Windows, and Battery, then select the least restrictive background option available.
Network policies block the connection
Public and workplace Wi-Fi networks may isolate devices or block the traffic Phone Link needs. Test on a private home network, keep Wi-Fi enabled on both devices, and verify that the PC is not switching between networks.
One side is out of date
Install pending Windows updates and update Link to Windows through the phone’s app store. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that Phone Link is current. Follow the official checklist at Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting page.

Remote shutdown is not remote wake
Turning a running PC off is generally simpler than turning an entirely powered-off computer on. Remote wake can require Wake-on-LAN support in the computer’s firmware and network adapter, an operating-system setting, and router configuration. The reports about the new Link to Windows controls do not promise that every PC can be woken remotely.
If you use sleep instead of shutdown, the reported warning indicates that the phone connection may drop and that you may have to wake the computer locally. Treat the control as a convenience for a PC that is already reachable, not as a replacement for a fully configured remote-access or Wake-on-LAN system.
Documented alternatives if Phone Link has no power controls
Third-party utilities already provide desktop-helper architectures for this task. They require more software and a separate security decision than Microsoft’s built-in integration.

Security checklist before enabling remote power commands
- Pair only devices and accounts you control; do not approve an unexpected QR code or sign-in request.
- Prefer a trusted private network. If a tool supports VPN access, use an authenticated VPN rather than exposing a power-control service directly to the public internet.
- Keep Windows, Android, Phone Link, Link to Windows, and any desktop helper updated.
- Review which permissions each app requests and remove the pairing if the phone or PC is lost.
- Remember that a shutdown command can interrupt unsaved work. Save files and close active sessions before sending it.
What to expect now
If the controls appear in your Phone Link connection, they can provide a quick way to restart or shut down a reachable Windows PC from an Android handset. If they do not appear, your setup may still meet Microsoft’s baseline requirements while waiting for the feature to reach your account or device. Existing helper-based apps can fill the gap, but they add installation, network, authentication, and privacy considerations.

Do my phone and PC need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
Microsoft recommends the same Wi-Fi network for the best Phone Link experience. Public or workplace networks can restrict device-to-device communication.
Can Phone Link turn on a completely powered-off PC?
The reported shutdown, restart, and sleep controls do not guarantee remote power-on. Waking a PC may require Wake-on-LAN support and additional firmware and network configuration.
