ChatGPT’s built-in memory can carry useful context between conversations, but it is selective: OpenAI says it “does not retain every detail from every conversation.” A separate, file-backed memory is another way to persist context—but the available documentation establishes that this is a software pattern, not that a particular setup was built or tested for this article. Here’s what the two approaches do, what local storage can and cannot promise, and how to think about a workflow without mistaking it for a verified personal implementation.
Why an AI can seem to forget between chats
A chat assistant may have access to some information from earlier conversations without retaining a complete, searchable record of everything you have said. In ChatGPT, memory can draw on saved memories, chat history, and other available sources such as custom instructions, files in Library, or connected apps. What is available and how controls appear can vary with plan, region, platform, and workspace settings. OpenAI’s guidance is explicit that memory is selective, not a guarantee that every detail will be recalled.

That distinction matters when a task depends on exact wording, a long project history, or a decision made weeks ago. A remembered preference can help personalize a response; it is not the same as preserving a full transcript or reliably retrieving every detail from it.

What “local memory” means—and what the evidence supports
Local memory generally means keeping context in a file or another storage layer that the user can inspect and manage, then making relevant material available to an AI when needed. This differs from a hosted assistant’s built-in memory, whose selection and storage behavior are governed by the product.

There is an official example of file-backed persistence in the OpenAI Agents SDK: its memory reference describes session history and persistent storage, including a file-path option. That documents a capability in the SDK; it does not mean ChatGPT’s consumer memory is stored in a user-controlled local file, guarantee that the same mechanism works with other products, or establish how any specific personal setup was implemented.
Hosted memory and a local file solve different problems
| Question | ChatGPT memory | File-backed workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the mechanism? | OpenAI’s product and account settings determine available memory sources and controls; availability varies by context. | The person or system managing the file can inspect and edit its contents, subject to the storage location, permissions, and any software that reads or sends it. |
| How does context get used? | Relevant information may be selected from available sources; it is not a complete record of every conversation. | Context must be supplied or retrieved by the software using the file. A file existing on disk does not by itself make an assistant read it. |
| What is documented? | OpenAI documents selective memory and account-dependent controls in its Memory in ChatGPT guidance. | The OpenAI Agents SDK memory reference documents a file-path persistence option for that SDK. |
Privacy and deletion require more than choosing local or hosted storage
A file on your device may give you direct control over that copy, but “local” does not automatically mean private. If an AI service or another connected application receives the file’s contents, that data is also subject to the service and account settings involved. Consider where the file is stored, who can access it, whether it is backed up or synced, and what software reads it.

For ChatGPT, turning memory off does not itself delete chat history. Saved memories can also be stored separately from the conversations where information first appeared. OpenAI says removing information may require deleting the saved memory, the original chat, and other places containing that information. Review the current controls and deletion details in the official Memory in ChatGPT guidance.
Data use also depends on account type and settings. OpenAI says personal-account chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when the relevant setting is enabled. It says Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content is not used to train models by default. Those are product statements, not a general privacy guarantee for hosted services, local files, or third-party tools.

A practical way to decide what belongs in persistent context
If you use a separate memory file, treat it as an intentional, editable reference—not a magical transcript archive. Keep it focused on details that are useful across sessions, and make sure the software you use actually supplies or retrieves those details. Because no particular implementation or test results are established here, these are design considerations rather than steps from a verified setup:
- Choose durable context: stable preferences, project constraints, terminology, and decisions are more useful than an undifferentiated dump of every chat.
- Make it reviewable: use a format you can read and edit, and periodically remove details that are outdated or no longer needed.
- Know the retrieval path: confirm how the assistant receives the file or selected excerpts; persistence alone does not ensure recall.
- Minimize sensitive content: do not store secrets or personal information unless you have a clear need and understand every service that may access it.
- Plan for deletion and backup: know which copies exist—including synced or backed-up copies—and how to remove them.
What “actually sticks” can reasonably mean
A persistent file can keep information available for later sessions if the surrounding software reads it and passes relevant content to the model. That is a narrower, testable claim than saying an AI will remember everything: recall still depends on what was saved, how it is selected, and whether the system receives it in the new session. The official SDK reference supports file-backed persistence as a pattern, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT guidance describes a separate, selective hosted-memory feature.
