AI code review can identify useful defects, but there is no established universal miss rate—and a comment is not proof that a bug was found or fixed. Studies show weaknesses at several points: detecting security flaws, explaining them accurately, accounting for project context, and persuading a team to act. Treat an AI review as a source of leads to verify, not as a security gate or substitute for tests and human judgment.
What bugs do AI code reviewers miss?
The evidence does not support a single list of bug types that every AI reviewer misses, or a reliable percentage of defects that these tools overlook. Results depend on the model, prompt, code and context available, evaluation method, and what counts as a correct finding.

A 2024 study tested six language models with five prompts on security code review and compared them with static-analysis tools. The authors found limited security-review capability overall. The strongest evaluated model performed best when given a list of Common Weakness Enumerations (CWEs) as a reference, while some responses were verbose or did not follow instructions. That points to sensitivity to task framing and output quality, not to a universal miss rate. Read the security code-review study.

There is also a gap between spotting a symptom and identifying its cause. A 2026 study of requirement-conformance judgments reported that GPT-4o matched symptoms more often than underlying bug causes on three selected benchmarks:
#1 Best Overall
| Benchmark | SymptomMatch | BugMatch |
|---|---|---|
| HumanEval | 98.2% | 59.1% |
| MBPP | 94.7% | 70.8% |
| QuixBugs | 100.0% | 58.3% |
These are task-specific benchmark measures, not production pull-request recall. They illustrate why a reviewer should ask for the underlying failure mechanism rather than accept a plausible-sounding description at face value. The same paper identifies over-correction: rejecting implementations that are actually correct. See the 2026 requirement-conformance study.
Can AI code review catch security vulnerabilities?
It can raise security concerns, but the available evidence does not make it a dependable standalone security check. An AI finding should be tested against the actual code path, threat assumptions, and project requirements; a clean AI review does not establish that code is secure.

Human review has gaps too. A 2024 case study analyzed 135,560 review comments in OpenSSL and PHP. Reviewers raised concerns across 35 of 40 security-related coding-weakness categories, but memory errors and resource-management weaknesses were discussed less often than known vulnerabilities in the study’s comparison. For concerns that were raised, developers attempted fixes in 39%–41% of cases, acknowledged them in 30%–36%, and left 18%–20% unfixed amid disagreement about solutions. Those findings describe the two studied projects, not all code review. They show that raising a concern—even correctly—does not guarantee remediation. Read the OpenSSL and PHP secure-review study.

Reliability is more than whether a tool produces comments. Teams also need to know whether findings are correct, relevant to their codebase, actionable, and worth the time required to investigate them.

A 2024 industrial study examined an LLM review tool based on the open-source Qodo PR Agent. About 238 practitioners across ten projects had access to the tool; the researchers’ analysis focused on three projects and 4,335 pull requests, of which 1,568 received automated reviews. The authors reported that “73.8% of automated comments were resolved.” In the same study, mean pull-request closure duration rose from 5 hours 52 minutes to 8 hours 20 minutes, with variation by project. The authors also described useful bug detection and increased awareness alongside faulty reviews, unnecessary corrections, and irrelevant comments. A resolved comment is not necessarily a correct finding, and these results from one deployment do not establish a general productivity effect. Read “Automated Code Review In Practice”.
Why does AI code review give false positives?
A reviewer can misread intent, lack relevant repository context, overreact to a suspicious pattern, or mistake a symptom for a defect. Incomplete context is particularly important: code that looks wrong in isolation may be valid given a caller, invariant, compatibility requirement, or convention elsewhere in the project.

Benchmark scores also depend on the answer key. Martian’s living Code Review Benchmark methodology notes that a model may identify a real bug absent from human annotations and then be scored as producing a false positive. Its described process combines human and model annotation, behavior-based filtering, human review, and bugs traced to production signals such as issues, reverts, hotfixes, or security advisories. This is a caveat about how benchmarks can count findings, not independent proof that any benchmark or tool is superior. Read the benchmark methodology.

It can help developers understand code, but the time saved depends on whether useful context and actionable findings outweigh the cost of triaging noise. In a 2025 field study at WirelessCar Sweden AB, developers generally preferred AI-led reviews for large or unfamiliar pull requests. Preferences varied with codebase familiarity and issue severity. Participants valued faster understanding, thoroughness, and contextual insights, while also raising concerns about trust, false positives, and the interface. The study used two LLM-assisted prototypes with retrieval-augmented semantic search to assemble context, so its findings should not be generalized to every product or workflow. Keep evidence about code generation separate from evidence about code review. GitHub’s randomized 2024 study involved 202 developers with at least five years of experience writing API endpoints; half had Copilot access and half had no AI tools. GitHub reported that the Copilot-access group was 53.2% more likely to pass all ten unit tests and 5% more likely to receive expert approval. Those results concern AI-assisted authorship on a controlled task, not whether an automated reviewer detects bugs in pull requests. Read GitHub’s study summary.
How to use AI review findings safely
Make a finding earn trust through evidence. A practical review policy can require the following before an AI comment blocks a merge:
- State the failure path: Ask what changed behavior is wrong, which assumptions matter, and how the defect can occur.
- Ground the claim: Require a reproducible example, test, trace, or precise code reference for blocking findings.
- Verify independently: Check the claim against tests, static analysis, dependency and security scanning, and a human reviewer familiar with the project’s requirements and history.
- Measure outcomes locally: Track confirmed true positives, false positives, missed production defects, and time spent triaging. Comment-resolution rate alone does not measure accuracy.
When comparing review tools, assess the workflow rather than relying on a headline accuracy claim: how much repository context is available, whether review is proactive or on demand, whether findings can be grounded in tests or other evidence, the false-positive burden, developer trust, and the effect on review-cycle time. The cited studies do not establish a current winner among named tools.
