Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA working checkout proves only that a payment flow ran under the conditions you tried. It does not prove that customers cannot tamper with prices, fake a successful payment, trigger duplicate fulfillment, expose sensitive data, or exploit an unsafe deployment change. Before accepting real money, review the deployed app’s payment logic, data handling, and trust boundaries—not just the screen that appears to work.
What does a working payment demo actually prove?
It shows that a visible path through the app completed during a particular test. It does not establish that the server independently verifies what was purchased, that the payment provider’s notification is genuine, or that delivery happens only once after confirmed payment.

AI assistance does not change that standard. AI-generated code may contain placeholder logic, weak input handling, or exposed secrets; stronger models and better prompts do not eliminate those risks. A 2026 paper on the security of “vibe-coded” applications is available at its abstract page; its abstract is not a code audit of your app or evidence that any particular app is vulnerable.
Think of payment readiness as a review of the complete deployed transaction: from the product and price shown to the customer, through payment authorization, to the action that delivers a product or grants account access.

Which parts of the payment flow must you check?
Start by drawing the flow and marking which component is trusted at each point. OWASP’s Third Party Payment Gateway Integration Cheat Sheet covers the security boundaries involved in integrating a provider.
- Map the journey. Record where cart data originates, where product prices and discounts are calculated, which page collects payment details, which backend creates the transaction, how the provider reports success or failure, and what event triggers delivery or account access.
- Make the server determine the order. Treat prices, discounts, order IDs, return-page parameters, and payment status sent by the browser as untrusted. Recalculate the total from trusted server-side product and pricing data before creating the payment.
- Verify payment before fulfillment. Do not grant access or deliver an order just because a customer reaches a “success” URL or the browser reports success. Confirm the transaction’s status with the provider and match it to the expected order, amount, and currency.
- Authenticate provider notifications. Verify webhook signatures or the provider’s equivalent callback credentials before acting on a notification. Reject events that do not match the expected transaction.
- Make repeat events safe. Payment providers may retry notifications. Use idempotent fulfillment so repeated delivery of the same valid event cannot ship a second item, create duplicate credits, or grant repeated entitlements.
- Test failure and tampering paths. Try changing a submitted amount or discount, reusing an order identifier, visiting a return URL without paying, sending an invalid callback, and replaying a valid notification. Confirm that no unverified or duplicate event triggers fulfillment.
OWASP’s Transaction Authorization Cheat Sheet likewise emphasizes server-side enforcement and protecting significant transaction details from client-side tampering.

Which payment-page approach fits a small app?
The key distinction is what the merchant’s page can touch and control—not how polished the checkout looks. PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) describes different e-commerce payment-page methods in FAQ 1292 (August 2015). Its later FAQ 1588 (February 2025) discusses SAQ A eligibility and protections against payment-page script attacks.

|---|---|---|
| Redirect to a provider-hosted page | The customer leaves your site to enter payment details on a third-party page. PCI SSC describes redirection to a third-party page as a fully outsourced option in FAQ 1292. | Use the provider’s current integration instructions. Confirm how your server creates the transaction and verifies its result, and ask your acquirer or compliance-accepting entity which obligations apply to your implementation. |
| Provider-hosted iframe | Payment fields are embedded in your page but served by the provider. PCI SSC says hosted pages and iframes are more resistant to transparent theft of card data as it is entered than direct-post or JavaScript-form patterns. | Follow the provider’s configuration instructions and verify the payment frame’s origin. For applicable embedded flows, check the script protections described in FAQ 1588, including whether the provider’s implementation includes protection when configured as instructed. |
| Merchant-generated form or direct post | Your app creates the payment form or handles more of the submission path, which gives you more control over appearance but also more exposure to malicious scripts that can steal payment data. | Do not treat a successful transaction as proof that the form is secure. Understand exactly what payment data your page can access and get an implementation-specific compliance assessment. |
A hosted redirect or iframe can reduce the payment data your app handles and may reduce PCI DSS scope, but the pattern’s name does not establish compliance or determine which Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) applies. Payment-page origin, account-data exposure, callback authentication, server-side order calculations, and merchant context all matter.

How should you review AI-generated code and tests?
Review generated changes as production code, especially changes to authentication, authorization, input validation, cryptographic operations, and payment logic. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet recommends manually writing security-critical tests and cautions against treating an AI-generated test suite as proof of security.
- Read changes to package scripts, CI workflows, Dockerfiles, and deployment configuration carefully: these can run with elevated privileges or change what is shipped.
- Check what files and project context the coding tool can read. Keep secrets and sensitive customer data out of that context where possible.
- Have a person independently test the critical payment cases, including tampered totals, forged or invalid notifications, payment failures, and repeated callbacks. A passing test suite is useful evidence of expected behavior, not a security verdict.
How should you protect credentials and customer data?
Keep the app’s exposure small: avoid collecting or storing card data unless the design clearly requires it and is properly supported. Classify the data the app handles, store only what it needs, and restrict access through least privilege. OWASP’s Protect Data Everywhere guidance covers these data-protection practices.

- Store secrets in a secrets vault rather than source code, browser code, or an AI prompt; define who can access them and how they will be rotated.
- Do not put secrets or other sensitive values in URLs or query strings, where they can leak through logs, browser history, or referrer data.
- Never give an AI coding agent broad production credentials without a specific need and human review.
Does using AI change your PCI DSS obligations?
PCI SSC’s September 15, 2026 announcement about Security Considerations for AI Systems says: “In general, when AI is used, it should be considered no different from any other form of technology when scoping the PCI requirements that may apply.” The supplement is guidance, not a mandatory standard; official PCI standards take precedence.

Nor does using a hosted checkout automatically make a business PCI compliant. PCI SSC advises merchants who are uncertain to consult their acquirer or payment brand; FAQ 1588 also says to ask the entity receiving the compliance submission whether an SAQ is required and which one applies. Confirm the answer for your actual integration and merchant context rather than choosing an SAQ based only on a checkout pattern.

When is an independent review worthwhile?
If nobody on the team can assess the payment architecture or test its security-critical behavior, seek an independent application security review or penetration test before launch. OWASP recommends using adversarial testing and independent analysis to build security confidence rather than relying on pass rates alone. A review can surface issues; it cannot guarantee that an app is secure.
