If a command works in your terminal but an AI agent reports “command not found,” the agent may not have the same PATH. A process inherits environment variables from the process that launches it; terminal startup files can add PATH entries that a separately launched editor, agent, or background service never receives. Check the environment of the process that fails, then fix the launch context that supplies it.
Why your agent’s PATH can differ from your terminal’s
PATH is part of a process’s environment, not a single live setting shared by every app on your laptop. A child process receives environment values from its parent when it starts. A shell may then adjust its own PATH through startup files, but that change does not update other already-running processes or separate shells. Apple’s archived Command Line Primer describes how an application launched from a shell inherits much of the shell’s environment.

This explains the common mismatch: the terminal you checked may have loaded shell configuration that the agent’s launcher did not. The key question is not only “What is PATH?” but “Which process started the one that cannot find the command?”
How VS Code’s agent and terminal environments differ
VS Code describes its Agent Host as a dedicated process for AI coding agents. Its integrated terminal is a separate process with its own shell and configuration. A terminal that can run a command therefore does not prove that an Agent Host can.

VS Code also documents instance inheritance: the first VS Code instance inherits environment variables from its parent; later instances inherit from the first running instance. If VS Code was already open before a PATH change, opening another window may keep the older environment. See the Agent Host overview and command-line and instance documentation.
On macOS, VS Code may invoke a login shell to resolve a development environment, while the integrated terminal can invoke another login shell. Depending on shell configuration, that can duplicate or reorder PATH entries. VS Code covers this behavior in its documentation for terminal process environments and terminal profiles. These terminal settings describe terminal behavior; do not assume a terminal-only change also changes the separate Agent Host.

Diagnose the process that cannot find the command
- Identify how the failing agent was launched. Was it started from a terminal command, VS Code, a desktop launcher, or a background service? That parent process determines the environment available to it.
- Inspect PATH in the failing context. Compare the agent’s environment with the terminal’s, rather than relying only on
echo $PATHin a separate shell. If the agent provides a way to run diagnostics, use it to inspect PATH there; otherwise, use the host’s process or agent diagnostics. - Check whether the executable itself is available. Confirm its location and whether that directory appears in the failing process’s PATH. A terminal result alone only establishes that the terminal can find it.
- Trace where the needed PATH entry is added. Determine whether it comes from an exported shell startup setting, a VS Code terminal profile, an editor’s parent environment, or explicit service configuration.
- Apply the change at the right scope, then restart the affected process. A terminal profile fix is appropriate for a terminal-only problem; an agent or service needs an environment supplied to that process when it launches.
Choose a fix for the launch context
| Where the failing process starts | What to check | Appropriate direction |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code or its Agent Host | Whether VS Code’s first instance was started before the PATH change, and whether the failing process is the Agent Host rather than the terminal. | Fully restart VS Code after changing the environment. For diagnosis of shared instance state, VS Code documents using a distinct --user-data-dir to isolate an instance. |
| VS Code integrated terminal | Selected shell, shell arguments, profile environment, and login-shell startup behavior. | Review VS Code’s terminal profile and environment settings; verify the result in that terminal. |
| macOS launchd job | The job’s own launch configuration and environment. | Configure the environment for the job rather than relying on interactive shell startup files. The third-party launchd.info reference discusses EnvironmentVariables and launchctl setenv; confirm current behavior and scope for your macOS version before using either method. |
Missing code command on macOS |
Whether the missing executable is specifically VS Code’s code CLI. |
VS Code documents the Command Palette action “Shell Command: Install ‘code’ command in PATH.” This addresses discovery of the code command, not every agent PATH mismatch. |
VS Code’s terminal settings include shell path, arguments, and an environment map. Settings such as terminal.integrated.inheritEnv and profile shell arguments concern terminal behavior; verify separately before treating them as an Agent Host fix. Avoid adding the current working directory to PATH: Apple’s archived primer warns against it for security reasons.

- It proves the command is discoverable in that terminal’s current environment.
- It does not establish that VS Code’s Agent Host, another VS Code instance, a desktop-launched app, or a launchd job received the same PATH.
- A new VS Code window may still use the environment inherited by the first running instance.
- A PATH change should target the process that lacks the executable; changing a terminal-only setting can leave a separate agent or service unchanged.
The precise launch sequence and settings described here are specific to the documented VS Code and macOS behavior. Other agents, editors, operating-system versions, and service managers may construct environments differently.
