You May Not Need a Launcher: Samsung’s Hidden Home Screen Settings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before installing a third-party launcher on a Samsung Galaxy phone, check the built-in Home screen settings. They already let you change the app grid and labels, add and resize supported widgets, arrange app icons, and hide apps. The exact options depend on your model, region, and software version; One UI 7 changes the available grid choices.

What Samsung’s Home screen settings can change

Samsung’s built-in Home screen controls cover several changes people commonly look for in a launcher. On One UI 7, Samsung documents adjustable app-icon sizes and labels for apps and widgets, as well as Home screen grid options. You can also add and arrange widgets and control which apps appear on the Home screen or in the App screen.

Menus and available options vary by device, software version, carrier, and region. Treat the paths below as guides: if a label differs or an option is missing, check your phone’s own Home screen settings.

How do I change the Galaxy Home screen grid?

On One UI 7, Samsung US lists two Home screen grid choices: 4×6 and 5×6. Samsung says the former default choices of 4×5 and 5×5 are no longer in the default selection. The path may vary by device or software version.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Home screen grid.
  4. Choose an available grid, such as 4×6 or 5×6 if your device offers them, then apply the change.

A grid changes how many icon positions are available; it does not mean every app must occupy a separate position. If you transferred or restored a phone with Smart Switch, Samsung notes that the previous grid setting may change, leaving empty spaces that you can rearrange.

How do I add, move, or remove app icons?

Add an app to the Home screen

  1. Open the App screen.
  2. Touch and hold the app you want.
  3. Tap Add to Home, if shown.

Remove a shortcut without uninstalling the app

Touch and hold the Home screen icon and choose Remove. This removes the shortcut from the Home screen; the app remains in the App screen. Choose an uninstall option only if you intend to remove the app itself.

Hide an app

On supported versions, go to Settings > Home screen > Hide apps and select the apps to hide. Hiding is different from removing a Home screen shortcut: Samsung’s support instructions describe hidden apps as absent from the App screen as well. The app is not thereby uninstalled.

How do I add or resize widgets without another launcher?

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Choose an app, then select the widget and its available size or type.
  4. Tap Add to place it on the Home screen.

To move a widget, touch and hold it and drag it to a new position. If the widget supports resizing, touch and hold it and drag its edges or corners. Available sizes and settings depend on the widget. Removing a widget removes it from the Home screen; it does not delete its app or the app’s settings.

What changed in One UI 7?

Grid choices

Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance lists 4×6 and 5×6 as the grid choices and says 4×5 and 5×5 are no longer in the default selection. This is a version-specific change, not a guarantee that every Galaxy model or regional software build presents the same menu.

App and widget labels

One UI 7 adds adjustable labels for apps and widgets. Samsung notes that third-party widgets do not receive these labels, and that labels can reduce the height available for widget content.

When is a third-party launcher worth considering?

Try Samsung’s Home screen controls first if your goal is to change the grid, adjust supported labels, organize shortcuts, hide apps, or use widgets. A different launcher is an option when you need features beyond the built-in controls, but Samsung’s documentation does not establish that its settings duplicate every launcher’s capabilities.

Samsung’s Japan support instructions describe switching the default Home UI through Settings > Apps > Choose default apps. That wording is region-specific, so look for the equivalent default Home app setting on your device. The other UI must be downloaded from a store. Samsung also warns that widgets may disappear while another UI is active and return after you restore One UI Home.

Quick choice: built-in Home screen or another launcher?

What you want to do Built-in Samsung Home screen Third-party launcher
Change the documented grid or app and widget labels Supported, with One UI 7 options varying by device and region. May offer other controls; capabilities depend on the launcher.

Before changing the layout

  • Check your software version and the options actually shown on your phone; One UI 7 guidance may not match an older build.
  • If you have just transferred or restored your device, check the grid and rearrange any empty spaces.
  • Make Home screen edits in portrait if you are running One UI 7 and the relevant controls are unavailable in landscape.
  • If you switch to another Home UI, be prepared to restore One UI Home if you want Samsung’s widgets to reappear.
