Two haircut choices can make fine or thin hair look less full: removing too much weight with layers, and leaving the ends overly wispy with heavy texturizing or razor cutting. Celebrity hairstylist Alex Pardoe’s advice is about how a cut looks—not about causing hair loss or changing follicle density.
The two haircut mistakes to avoid
1. Removing too much weight with layers
Layers can add movement, but taking out too much weight may make the hair look sparse, particularly toward the ends. “Over-layering or removing too much weight can make thin hair look even more sparse, especially through the ends,” Pardoe says.
2. Making the ends too wispy
Excessive texturizing and razor cutting can thin out the perimeter visually. Very long styles may also leave fine hair looking stringy instead of full, according to Pardoe. The issue is the appearance and shape of the cut, not a change in how many follicles are growing hair.
What to ask your stylist for
Ask for a cut that preserves weight and leaves a strong, blunt perimeter. Pardoe names bobs, lobs and one-length cuts as shapes that can create the illusion of thicker hair. If you prefer layers, ask for them to be minimal and strategic, with enough density left at the ends.

You can describe the goal directly: “I want movement, but I’d like to keep weight through the ends and avoid a wispy perimeter.” Your stylist can adapt the shape to your length and the way your hair falls.
How to add lift when styling
For root volume, Pardoe recommends a lightweight volumizing mousse or spray. Blow-dry the hair in the opposite direction from its natural fall to encourage lift at the roots. He also says dry shampoo can be used at the roots even on wash day to help keep them from getting oily too quickly.

Keep conditioning or smoothing products mainly from the mid-lengths to the ends. Rich formulas, or applying too much conditioner near the roots, can weigh fine hair down and make it look flat. These styling choices affect the look and feel of the hair; they do not increase hair density.
