You Can Use an Old Laptop as a Smart Home Hub

A compatible old laptop can run Home Assistant as a local smart-home hub. Here’s what to check, how to install it, and when you need a separate Zigbee or Thread adapter.

Yes. A compatible 64-bit x86-64 laptop with UEFI boot support can run Home Assistant, giving you a local hub for compatible smart-home devices and automations. For a laptop dedicated to the job, Home Assistant OS (HAOS) is the simplest route—but installing it this way erases the laptop’s existing operating system and data. Back up anything you need before you begin.

Check whether your laptop is a suitable hub

Home Assistant’s generic x86-64 installation guide covers laptops as well as other computers. The computer must support 64-bit x86-64 and UEFI boot. The guide’s BIOS instructions say to enable UEFI and disable Secure Boot.

Also consider the condition of the machine before relying on it as an always-available controller. Check whether it stays awake with the lid closed or can be configured not to sleep, whether it has adequate ventilation, and whether its battery and power supply are in good condition. Behavior and suitability vary by model; the documentation does not establish universal guidance on laptop power use, heat, or lid settings.

Choose how Home Assistant will run

Home Assistant OS for a dedicated laptop

Home Assistant recommends HAOS for most users. It bundles Home Assistant Core and Supervisor and supports Home Assistant apps, reducing the amount of host-system maintenance you need to handle. On a laptop converted into a dedicated hub, this is the straightforward option.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Hub (newest model), 8", Redesigned with customizable control and Alexa+, Compatible with thousands of devices
  • Echo Hub — An easy-to-use smart home control panel redesigned for your home. Arrange controls on your dashboard to quickly adjust devices, view cameras, start routines, and more.
  • Customize your dashboard — Arrange devices into sections and resize them to focus on what matters most. Create a personalized layout that matches how your family uses their connected devices.
  • Reimagined for your home - With an Alexa+ and compatible Ring subscription (sold separately), get Ring camera event summaries to stay in the know. Search your Ring footage using simple voice commands. Create routines by voice, activate modes to manage multiple devices at once, and chat with Alexa to easily control your smart home.
  • Home security for the whole family — Use Echo Hub to easily arm and disarm your compatible security system, making it easy for everyone in your family to manage home security. Use the Alexa app and compatible cameras, locks, alarms, and sensors to check in while you're out.
  • Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.

The trade-off is that the official installation writes HAOS to the target machine and removes its existing operating system and data. Copy needed files elsewhere first, and take care to select the correct drive during installation.

Container or virtual machine if the laptop must keep another role

If you want to keep the laptop’s existing operating system or use it for other tasks, a container or virtual machine may suit you better. That keeps the machine more flexible, but it puts more responsibility on you: Container users manage the host and Home Assistant updates, and some integrations controlled by apps—including Thread and Z-Wave—do not have out-of-the-box support in that installation type. See Home Assistant’s installation overview before choosing.

Install HAOS on the laptop

The generic x86-64 guide’s recommended route is to boot Ubuntu from a USB flash drive and install HAOS from there. It says this method works with laptops that have internal hard drives. You will need an internet connection, Ethernet for the generic x86-64 setup, and a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up the laptop. The procedure removes the existing operating system and data from the target drive. Confirm that your backup is usable and that you know which drive will be overwritten.
  2. Prepare the BIOS or UEFI settings. Enable UEFI boot and disable Secure Boot, following the laptop manufacturer’s instructions if needed.
  3. Boot Ubuntu from a USB flash drive. Follow the current steps in Home Assistant’s generic x86-64 guide to prepare the installer and boot the laptop.
  4. Install HAOS to the intended drive. Check the selected target carefully; writing the installation to it deletes the data and operating system already there.
  5. Connect the laptop to your network and finish setup. Use Ethernet for the documented generic x86-64 setup, then follow Home Assistant’s on-screen setup process.

Match device connections to their radios

The laptop’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection can provide network access for smart devices that use those networks, provided Home Assistant supports the device’s integration. The laptop does not automatically include Zigbee or Thread radio capability.

  • Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

For Zigbee or Thread devices, Home Assistant lists the optional Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 USB adapter. It is an accessory for those protocols, not a requirement for running Home Assistant. Thread-based Matter devices also need a Thread border router; Home Assistant documents using the ZBT-2 with the OpenThread Border Router app as one option.

Matter devices may use Wi-Fi or Thread. A Thread label alone does not prove that a product supports Matter, so check for the Matter logo or confirmation from the manufacturer. Matter relies on local IPv6 and mDNS traffic; network segmentation or multicast filtering can disrupt device discovery or commissioning. Home Assistant’s Matter integration documentation explains the requirements and setup options.

Know what keeps working without internet

Home Assistant says that its local installation can keep a smart home working when the internet is down: “Home Assistant runs on your own hardware, so your smart home keeps working even when the internet is down and your data stays at home with you.” That does not mean every device or integration will work offline. Features that depend on a vendor’s cloud service may be unavailable without internet access.

When reusing a laptop makes sense

A laptop is a practical choice if you already own a compatible machine, can dedicate it to Home Assistant, and are comfortable with the installation and ongoing physical upkeep. If you need to keep its current operating system, choose an approach that runs alongside it and accept the added management. Home Assistant describes its Green appliance as plug-and-play, while also identifying existing mini PCs and x86-64 computers as suitable hardware; replacing a laptop is not necessary simply to get started.
