Chrome’s Help me write suggestion is a generative-writing prompt that can appear when you type into certain text fields. You’ll typically see it as an offer to draft, rewrite, or improve what you’re composing—often tied to Google’s AI experiences.
If you find those prompts distracting (or you simply don’t want AI writing suggestions), you can turn them off. The exact toggle name can vary by Chrome version, but the paths below cover the practical cases that show up most often.

What Chrome Help me write is (and why it shows up)
When enabled, Chrome can surface a “help me write” style suggestion inside compatible places like web forms, mail compose boxes, and some productivity experiences. The goal is to reduce typing and improve clarity, but it can also interfere with your own drafting flow.
In most setups, the prompt is triggered by one of two sources:

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- A browser-integrated AI feature (controlled by Chrome settings and Google account controls).
- A website-integrated AI feature (controlled by the site, not Chrome—though Chrome can still show a prompt when it supports the experience).
Before you change settings
To avoid confusion, confirm two things first:
- Which device are you using? Desktop Chrome vs Chrome on Android vs Chrome on iPhone/iPad.
- Does the prompt appear everywhere or only on one website? If it’s one site, you may need site-specific steps (cookies/data) or a different setting than you’d expect.
Also make sure you’re signed into the same Google account you normally use. AI-related controls often follow your account settings.
Turn off Help me write on Chrome for desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Use these steps first. If your build includes a generative writing toggle, it’s usually the cleanest way to stop the suggestions system-wide.
Method A: Disable the generative AI writing features in Settings
- Open Chrome.
- Go to Settings (type
chrome://settingsin the address bar, then press Enter). - In the left sidebar, open Privacy and security.
- Look for a section related to generative AI, AI features, or Chrome’s writing help.
- Find a toggle for Help me write or writing suggestions and switch it to Off.
- Reload the page where the prompt appears (hard reload: Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows/Linux, Cmd + Shift + R on macOS).
If you see multiple AI toggles (for example, “assist with writing” and “assist with reading”), turn off the ones that mention writing, drafting, rewriting, or generative suggestions.
Method B: Turn off site-level assistance prompts
Some prompts are driven by site behavior (or a saved permission-like setting). If the suggestion is only happening on one domain, do this:
- Open Chrome and go to the website where you see Help me write.
- Click the padlock icon (or site information icon) in the address bar.
- Check for any options related to AI assistance, autofill writing, or enhanced features (names vary by site).
- Turn off anything resembling writing assistance or stop the site from using enhanced prompts.
- Refresh the page.
When the site is the cause, Chrome’s global toggle won’t always remove the prompt by itself.

Turn off Help me write on Chrome for Android (and iPhone/iPad)
Mobile settings are more compact, so you may need to use search inside Settings.
Android steps
- Open Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap ⋮ (three-dot menu) > Settings.
- Tap Privacy and security.
- Use the Settings search (if available) and search for AI, generative, or writing.
- Turn off the toggle for Help me write / writing suggestions / AI writing features.
- Close and reopen the app/site where the prompt appears.
iPhone and iPad steps
- Open Chrome on iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Settings (tap the ⋯ menu first if needed).
- Tap Privacy and security.
- Use search and look for AI, generative, or writing.
- Turn off any toggle matching Help me write or writing suggestions.
- Restart the page where the prompt appears.
If you don’t find a relevant toggle on iOS, the prompt is very likely site-driven rather than browser-driven. In that case, the workaround section below will help.

Chrome feature names change as Google rolls out updates, and not every user gets the same set of controls immediately. If you can’t find the exact setting, use the checks below to regain control.
Update Chrome and refresh the settings page
- Desktop: go to chrome://settings/help to check your Chrome version.
- Update Chrome if a newer version is available.
- Revisit chrome://settings and use the search box for AI or generative.
- Reload the affected webpage.
On many systems, the AI-related toggles only appear after the new UI/control set is pushed.
Check whether the prompt is coming from a site or a browser feature
Try this quick test:
- Open an unrelated website with a text field (for example, a basic form page).
- See if Help me write appears there too.
- If it only appears on one site, treat it as site behavior.
Site behavior often persists even when you disable Chrome’s feature because the website itself is generating or inserting the prompt.

Disable extensions that add writing tools
Extensions are a common reason you still see writing suggestions after turning off Chrome settings.

- Toggle off extensions that mention writing, AI, rewriting, grammar, or “assistant” features.
- Refresh the page where the prompt appears.
If the prompt disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time until you find the culprit.
Clear site data for the triggering website
This resets cookies and site permissions that can keep the prompt alive.
- Go to chrome://settings/content (or Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data).
- Find See all site data and permissions.
- Search for the domain that triggers Help me write.
- Select it and choose Delete (or remove the stored data).
- Reload the site and check whether the prompt returns.
Troubleshooting common problems
Help me write keeps coming back after you disable it
- Reload and confirm the state: after turning off the toggle, refresh the page (hard reload if needed).
- Check extensions again: one extension can reintroduce an assistant UI.
- Clear site data: stored preferences can make prompts reappear.
- Confirm you’re logged into the right account: Chrome AI settings can differ across accounts.
The suggestion appears only on one website
If it’s only one domain, it’s usually not (only) a Chrome setting. Try:
- Clearing site data for that domain.
- Disabling relevant extensions.
- Looking for website controls like “Turn off writing assistant” inside the product UI.
Keyboard/autofill suggestions still appear
Turning off Help me write may not disable plain autofill. If you still see autocomplete-style suggestions, distinguish between:

Alternatives if you still want writing help
If the feature is useful but you want it on your terms, consider limiting it instead of fully disabling everything.
Use the feature only in the site that offers it
Some tools let you control writing assistance inside the product (for example, toggles in a web compose box). That keeps your browser settings clean while still giving you help when you want it.
Switch to a text editor workflow instead
Draft in Chrome without prompts, then copy into a dedicated editor or assistant you control. This avoids “in-field” distractions and makes it easier to review what was generated.

FAQs
Does turning off Help me write affect autofill and password suggestions?
No, those are separate features. Disabling AI writing assistance should stop generative prompts, but it shouldn’t change autofill, saved passwords, or form completion behavior.

Will I still see Help me write on Google sites like Gmail or Docs?
Possibly. Google’s own apps may provide writing assistance with controls inside those products. If you see the prompt in Google environments, check both Chrome settings and the site/app’s writing-assistant settings.
I turned it off, but I still see the prompt—what’s the fastest fix?
Disable extensions first, then clear site data for the triggering domain. Those two steps resolve the majority of “it won’t stay off” cases.
Why is there no toggle in my Chrome settings?
Feature rollout varies by version, account, and region. If you can’t find the setting, treat it as site-driven: clear site data and check site controls.

Bottom Line
You can turn off Chrome’s Help me write suggestion by disabling the generative AI writing option in Chrome Settings when it’s available, then reloading the page. If the prompt doesn’t go away, it’s usually either an extension or a website-driven assistant.
Start with the Chrome toggle, then fall back to disabling extensions and clearing site data for the domain that triggers the prompt.
