Yes: the community project gbos-vm adapts a Dell Googlebook recovery image to run in a GPU-accelerated virtual machine on Apple Silicon Macs. It is not a Mac release from Google or Dell, and the project warns that the result is an experimental development VM—not a verified Googlebook. If you want to try it, check the hardware, storage and security caveats before installing.
What this project does
Rather than emulate a whole laptop or install a generic Android build, gbos-vm uses a Googlebook recovery image and adapts it for virtual hardware. Its installer fetches the recovery image and components from Google’s Cuttlefish project, rebuilds the vendor partition with virtual-device replacements, then packages the result in a Mac app. QEMU and graphics components pass Vulkan rendering through MoltenVK to Apple’s Metal graphics framework.

The result is an unofficial way to explore Googlebook OS on a compatible Mac; it does not turn the Mac into a verified retail Googlebook. The October 8, 2026 Android Authority overview also describes it as an experimental preview.

- Apple Silicon only: Intel Macs are explicitly unsupported. The ARM guest relies on the host hypervisor rather than being emulated on Intel.
- Memory: The project maintainer describes 16 GB of host RAM as realistic. The VM is allocated 4 GB, while building and running the project also require memory.
- Free storage: The README calls for 60 GB free and reports approximately 9 GB of downloads.
- Build tools: The documented prerequisites include Xcode command-line tools, Homebrew, Android SDK/NDK and build tools, and a JDK. The README specifies NDK version 28.2.13676358 and Android platform API 34 or newer; consult the live instructions because dependencies may change.
Compatibility reports are limited: the maintainer reports building and testing on an M5 Mac with 16 GB RAM and macOS 27, plus a few successful reports from M4 Macs. That is not a broad compatibility study or a guarantee for every Apple Silicon configuration.

The README says the installer downloads its inputs to your Mac and checks them against pinned SHA-256 hashes; it does not redistribute Google’s or UTM’s binaries. At the time of the documented snapshot, those inputs included Googlebook recovery build 16471258, Cuttlefish virtual-device image build 16373615, UTM 5.0.6 beta, Mesa 26.2.4, libsepol 3.11 and bison 3.8.2. These are snapshot versions, not a promise that later installs will use the same ones. Guest data persists in work/image/googlebook.raw. The app settings include pointer mode, resolution, memory, CPU cores, networking and audio; see the README for current controls and keyboard shortcuts.

Is it safe to sign in?
Do not treat this VM as having the security properties of a verified retail device. According to the maintainer, Googlebook OS expects hardware the VM does not provide, including a TPM, Trusty, Qualcomm DSP and a particular GPU. The project replaces hardware-oriented vendor components with virtual-device equivalents and uses software KeyMint and Gatekeeper. The modified vendor partition cannot have verified boot.
The README states: “This isn’t affiliated with Google or Dell, and it’s not a verified Googlebook. Read System Structure before you sign into anything.” It also advises: “So: treat it like a dev VM.” If you proceed, follow that warning and avoid relying on it for sensitive accounts or data.

Who should try it?
This is best suited to technically comfortable Apple Silicon owners who have the memory and disk space, want to explore the OS, and can tolerate broken or untested features. It is a poor fit if you have an Intel Mac, need reliable Bluetooth or long-session stability, or require the assurance of a verified device. The project README is the place to check for changes to requirements, commands and known issues before you begin.
