The clearest answer is matchup-dependent: the manga presents powerful individuals on both sides, but their titles are not a published combat scale. A duel, a crew-versus-Marine conflict, and a contest over territory are different comparisons.
What do the titles tell us about strength?
Yonko and Admiral describe positions in the world of One Piece, not standardized combat classes. The available comparison does not establish that every person who holds either position has identical ability, nor does it provide a numeric scale for ranking them.

That means the title alone cannot settle an individual matchup. To compare two characters, look at what each actually does in the relevant story circumstances rather than treating rank as a guaranteed outcome.

Fans often point to Whitebeard and Akainu at Marineford, Luffy and Kizaru on Egghead, Green Bull’s remarks about entering Wano, and Shanks’ effect on Green Bull. These scenes are useful evidence for discussing particular characters, but they do not independently prove a rule covering every Yonko and Admiral.
#1 Best Overall
- Whitebeard and Akainu: Marineford is a specific conflict with its own circumstances; a clash there is not a controlled, context-free comparison of all Emperors and Admirals.
- Luffy and Kizaru: Their Egghead encounter involves particular goals and conditions. Its events should be assessed on their own terms rather than treated as a universal ranking.
- Green Bull and Wano: Caution about entering an opponent’s territory speaks to risk and deterrence as well as combat ability.
- Shanks and Green Bull: The scene demonstrates an impact on that particular Admiral; it does not establish how every Admiral would fare against every Yonko.
AllThingsHow’s August 11, 2026 analysis argues that Admirals sit below Yonko, drawing on these kinds of examples, bounty comparisons, and territory. That is one secondary interpretation, not an official measurement or settled canon rule: AllThingsHow’s comparison.
Why a Yonko crew is not the same as one Yonko
A one-on-one fight asks how two individuals fare against each other. A war involving a Yonko also involves that Emperor’s crew and allies; a conflict involving the Marines can draw on an institution and its resources. Comparing those groups does not answer who would win a duel between two named characters.

Keep the scope explicit: individual combat compares fighters, while group conflict compares forces, support, and circumstances. Treating either result as proof of the other mixes distinct questions.
What territory and bounties can—and cannot—tell us
Control of territory and willingness to enter an opponent’s domain reflect strategic risk and deterrence. They can matter to a conflict without serving as a direct test of who would win a fair fight.

A bounty is an in-world reward and status figure, not a pure strength statistic. Even where characters’ bounty figures are used in fan comparisons, they should not be converted into a combat score or treated as proof of a universal hierarchy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does SBS volume 76 settle the debate?
An online claim attributes to Eiichiro Oda an SBS volume 76 answer saying Yonko and Admirals are nearly equivalent in individual strength. The attribution could not be verified against the primary volume or a reliable official translation, so it should not be repeated as an established Oda quotation. Wanted Store’s April 2026 result makes the claim, but its page was not available for full verification: Wanted Store’s article.

- Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, One Piece
- As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks
- But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber
The One Piece SBS Project is a fan-created index that says it recreates reader questions and responses. It may help locate material, but it is not a substitute for checking the licensed volume. No verified, attributable statement from Oda or an official source in the available material resolves the comparison.

How to judge a specific matchup
- Name the fighters. “Yonko versus Admiral” is too broad to predict a result for every possible pair.
- Separate the conditions from the title. Identify the goal, setting, allies, and circumstances of the encounter.
- Use the actual events as evidence. Describe what happens in that matchup without turning one scene into a rule for the whole rank.
- Keep the comparison in scope. A duel, a crew-versus-Marine conflict, and control of territory answer different questions.
- Distinguish canon from interpretation. A fan analysis can offer a case, but it does not become an official ranking or author statement.
