YouTube has redesigned parts of its interface repeatedly, from its homepage and video page to player controls, icons, navigation, saving and comments. A changed screen may be part of a broad rollout—or a limited test—so what you see can depend on your device, account and timing.
What “YouTube’s layout” includes
There has not been just one redesign. The term can refer to how YouTube arranges its homepage, navigation, watch page and channels, as well as the appearance of icons and the way controls for playback, saving and comments work. The changes have come in stages across different products and devices.

How YouTube’s interface has evolved
| Year | What changed | Scope and context |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 | YouTube simplified the homepage masthead, organizing search and browsing on the left and subscriptions, viewing history and uploads on the right. | An example of organizing the homepage around discovery and personal activity. YouTube Blog |
| 2010 | The video page was reorganized to emphasize the video and creator engagement. Changes included grouping video information, streamlining the action bar, moving next-video discovery to the right and adjusting playlist navigation. | YouTube said this version was rolled out to all users after earlier feedback and research. YouTube Blog |
| 2011 | YouTube announced a connected refresh of its homepage and channels, with a consistent background, larger thumbnails, a cleaner watch page and redesigned channels. | A broader visual refresh spanning several parts of the site. YouTube Blog |
| 2017 | YouTube previewed a desktop redesign based on Material Design principles, with simplicity, consistency with the mobile app and visual polish among its stated goals. | During that preview, participants could choose “Restore classic YouTube” from the Account Menu. That was a control for the 2017 preview, not evidence of a current general-purpose rollback option. YouTube Blog |
| 2022 | A viewing-focused refresh added ambient mode, a darker dark theme, color treatment for playlists, revised watch-page controls, pinch to zoom and precise seeking. | YouTube said it wanted to bring focus back to the video and minimize distractions. Its post said it gathered input from “thousands of viewers around the world,” without giving an exact count. YouTube Blog |
| 2023 | YouTube redesigned more than 450 system UI icons. | Art Director Amy Yip described goals including legibility, consistency, accessibility and internationalization. YouTube Blog |
| September 2025 | YouTube announced a Hide control for end screens on the video currently playing and removal of an extra desktop subscribe button that appeared when hovering over a video watermark. | YouTube said the subscribe-button change was intended to simplify viewing. In a global mobile experiment from March through July 2025, offering the option to hide end screens was associated with less than a 1.5% decrease in views from end screens, according to YouTube. This is a narrow experiment result, not a measure of overall satisfaction with redesigns. TeamYouTube announcement |
| October 2025 | TeamYouTube announced an updated player across mobile, web and TV; less intrusive double-tap seeking; smoother mobile tab transitions; custom like animations on select content; refreshed video saving; and threaded comment replies. | The announced rollout was to begin globally the week of October 13. That timing does not mean every viewer received every feature simultaneously. TeamYouTube announcement |
| 2026 | YouTube’s experiment log described a mobile navigation test that moved Subscriptions to a swipeable top area, as well as a separate YouTube Studio Insights test on desktop. | The mobile test was for a small percentage of Android and iOS viewers globally; the Studio test was for creators, not a universal change to the viewer interface. Experiments are not proof of a broad release. YouTube experiment log |
Why YouTube changes its design
YouTube has described simplicity, consistency and visual polish as goals for its 2017 redesign preview. In 2022, it said it wanted to make the video more central and reduce distractions. In 2025, TeamYouTube described its announced updates as intended to make the experience more engaging, easier to navigate and more fun to interact with. These are the company’s stated aims; they do not establish that every viewer finds a change easier or better.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Some changes also have specific evidence attached to them. For example, YouTube reported the end-screen view result from its global mobile experiment; that figure applies to that experiment, not to redesigns as a whole.
Why your YouTube screen may look different
Seeing a different arrangement does not necessarily mean YouTube has changed the interface for everyone. The platform’s public experiment log documents tests that may be limited by device or viewer group, while its viewer updates page lists dated updates whose availability may depend on device, membership or eligibility.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Platform: web, Android, iOS, TV or YouTube Studio.
- Availability: a feature announced for rollout or one being tested with a limited group.
- Interface area: homepage and navigation, the watch player, saving and comments, or icon design.
- Timing: when the change was announced or observed.
A test on mobile and a desktop rollout are different experiences; they should not be treated as the same release.

Can you switch back to the old YouTube layout?
YouTube documented a “Restore classic YouTube” option for participants in its 2017 desktop redesign preview. That historical control does not establish that a general-purpose option to restore an older layout is available now. An April 2024 YouTube Help Community thread shows users asking how to revert an experimental desktop redesign, but the question itself is not confirmation of an official rollback setting. Check YouTube’s current viewer updates or experiment information for a control that applies to your specific change rather than relying on old instructions.

YouTube’s layout has changed repeatedly, but not as a single, uniform redesign. The homepage, watch page, channels, player, icons and interaction controls have evolved at different times, and some changes have been tests rather than permanent releases. To understand a difference you notice, identify the screen area, device and date, then check whether YouTube described it as an experiment or a rollout.
