Yes. Turning on GPS does not guarantee an exact position: buildings, trees, reflected signals, satellite geometry, atmospheric conditions and the phone’s receiver can all affect the estimate. And if the blue dot is in the right place but a street, address or business label is wrong, the problem may be the map rather than GPS.
Why GPS can be on while your location is inaccurate
A phone calculates its position from signals it receives from satellites. GPS.gov says the result depends on satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions and receiver design. A clear view of the sky generally helps; indoors, underground, near tall buildings or beneath bridges and trees, the phone may receive weaker or fewer satellite signals. Signals can also bounce off buildings or other surfaces before reaching the receiver, introducing error. GPS.gov explains these factors, and Apple notes that GPS accuracy depends on the number of visible satellites.

GPS.gov gives a typical smartphone accuracy example of a 4.9 m (16 ft.) radius under open sky. That is an example, not a guarantee for every phone or setting. The same page’s figure of no more than 2.0 m (6.6 ft.) daily global average user range error, with 95% probability, describes the GPS signal in space—not the accuracy of a phone’s position. Local reception, satellite geometry and the receiver affect what the device can determine.

Phones can use more than satellite signals
A displayed location may be a blended estimate. On Android devices using Google Play services, Location Accuracy can combine GPS with nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular networks and device sensors such as the accelerometer, barometer and gyroscope. Google says this can help, particularly indoors or near large buildings. Apple says an iPhone or iPad may use Wi-Fi or cellular networks when satellite signals are blocked or unavailable. These sources help a device estimate its position, but they do not make every reading exact.

Satellite acquisition can take time
Apple says finding visible satellites can take several minutes, with accuracy improving gradually. When checking an iPhone or iPad, allow time in a place with a clear view in several directions; a reading taken immediately after opening an app may be less settled.
First identify what is actually wrong
Look at the blue dot separately from the map details. If the dot itself is displaced from where you are, investigate positioning and reception. If the dot seems plausible but the road, address, business label or route is wrong, the map information may be at fault. GPS satellites do not supply those map details; providers maintain them separately. GPS.gov notes that maps can be drawn incorrectly, businesses mislabeled, roads omitted or addresses estimated inaccurately. GPS.gov’s map-fix guidance distinguishes map-data problems from GPS positioning.

Checks to try on your phone
- Test in a more open location. Move outside, away from tall buildings, bridges and heavy tree cover, with a clear view in several directions. Wait a few minutes for the position to settle.
- Check date and time on an iPhone or iPad. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and use automatic time settings if possible. Apple includes correct date, time and time zone among its location troubleshooting steps.
- Check location access for the app. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and review the app’s permission. On Android 12 or later, check the app’s precise-location permission separately from the device-wide Location Accuracy setting.
- Review Android Location Accuracy. On current Google guidance, go to Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy. Android setting names and paths can vary by version; older releases may use a different path.
- Compare the dot with the map. If the dot appears to mark your position but a road, address or business is wrong, report the map error to the relevant provider instead of assuming the phone’s GPS has failed.
- Check whether the problem is isolated. Compare the result in another location or app. One bad reading alone does not establish a hardware fault. If satellite reception appears to fail suddenly across locations or apps, GPS.gov points users to its service outage and status reports.
How the pattern helps narrow the cause
- Mostly indoors or near large buildings: obstruction or reflected signals may be affecting satellite reception; test outdoors in a more open area.
- The blue dot looks right, but an address or road does not: investigate the map data rather than treating it as a GPS-position error.
- One app is inaccurate while another is not: check that app’s location permission, including precise-location access where available.
- Several apps show a poor position in several places: check device location settings and whether satellite reception has changed. The symptom alone does not prove a hardware failure.
When a wrong reading does not prove the phone is broken
A single misplaced dot can result from the environment, the time needed to acquire satellites, the positioning method or a map-data error. The cited official guidance supports checking reception conditions, relevant permissions and map details; it does not establish that one inaccurate reading means a damaged GPS component. If the issue persists across locations and apps after those checks, consult the phone maker’s support for device-specific troubleshooting.
