The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc drive; some later Digital Edition models can use Sony’s separately sold drive, but compatibility depends on the console’s exact model number.
Which PS5 models can play movie discs?
A PS5 with an installed, compatible disc drive can play video discs. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition has no disc support. Sony says its CFI-ZDD1 add-on drive can be used with specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups; Sony’s US product page identifies compatible slim Digital Edition groups including specified CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 models. Check the CFI number on your console before buying a drive, rather than relying on the “Digital Edition” name alone. Can PS5 play 4K Blu-ray movies?
Yes. A PS5 with a compatible disc drive supports Ultra HD Blu-ray as well as standard Blu-ray movie discs. Sony’s FAQ confirms video playback from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs on the console version with a drive. “4K Blu-ray” here means an Ultra HD Blu-ray video disc; it is distinct from streaming a 4K movie. Yes, provided the console has a disc drive. Sony lists DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and AVCHD among supported media. Recordable DVDs must be finalized; an unfinalized disc is not supported. Sony’s format and playback guidance and CFI-21XX instruction manual provide the format details.

Does the PS5 Digital Edition need internet to play discs?
If you add Sony’s compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive to a supported Digital Edition, an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Sony does not say that ordinary movie-disc playback requires an internet connection every time. Keep that setup requirement separate from other online features or updates: Sony’s manual notes that some PS4-format Blu-ray functionality may be absent on PS5, may require a system software update, and requires internet for that compatibility note. Sony’s drive page and manual explain these separate requirements.
How to start Blu-ray or DVD playback
- Insert the Blu-ray Disc or DVD into the disc slot. Sony says the Disc Player appears in the media home when the disc is recognized.
- Select Disc Player from the media home to start playback.
- If the disc is not recognized, check its format, condition, finalization (for recordable DVDs), region compatibility, and whether the console’s drive is installed and supported.

Which discs will not work, and what can interrupt playback?
Sony lists these media as unsupported:
- CDs
- BD-RE version 1.0
- BD-R/RE XL
- DVDs that have not been finalized
A supported format is not a guarantee that every individual disc will play. Scratches, dust, recording quality, the recording device, manufacturing variation, or encoding can interfere with playback. Sony also advises against inserting 8 cm, non-circular, cracked, deformed, repaired, or labeled discs because they may damage the console. Will an imported Blu-ray play on PS5?
Do not assume every imported disc will work. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual explains that BD and DVD region codes may be assigned based on geographic distribution, and that the console’s BD/DVD region code can be changed to match a disc up to four times. Playback therefore depends on the disc’s region and the console’s region settings; the manual does not promise compatibility with every import. Does PS5 play 3D Blu-ray?
No. Sony says PS5 does not support 3D stereoscopic output. That limitation is separate from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray support: a compatible PS5 drive can play 4K UHD movie discs, but the console does not provide 3D stereoscopic output. Sony stated this in its PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020.
