Start at 0 dB, then try the lower settings if the bass sounds exaggerated at your listening position—especially when the monitors are near a wall. The switch adjusts the speaker’s response; it does not measure or correct the room.
What does ROOM CONTROL do on the Yamaha HS8?
ROOM CONTROL attenuates the HS8’s low-frequency response below 500 Hz. Its three positions are 0 dB, -2 dB, and -4 dB. Yamaha describes the control as a way to reduce unnatural, exaggerated low end that can occur when speakers are placed near walls.

The settings are reductions in the speaker’s response, not a measurement of how much bass your room adds. A -4 dB setting does not guarantee that bass buildup will disappear, and 0 dB is not a claim that the room has no acoustic effect.
Which ROOM CONTROL setting should you use near a wall?
Yamaha does not specify a universal setting or a single wall distance that determines which position to use. The result depends on the room and speaker placement, so use the switch as an adjustment to evaluate rather than a fixed rule.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Begin at 0 dB. Set ROOM CONTROL to its neutral position and place both monitors symmetrically where you intend to use them.
- Listen from your normal working position. Use familiar music or other material with bass you know well. Pay attention to whether low frequencies seem unusually heavy or obscure other parts of the sound.
- Change only ROOM CONTROL. If the bass seems exaggerated, try -2 dB. Keep the material and listening position the same so you can judge the change.
- Compare with -4 dB if needed. Choose the setting that sounds more balanced at your seat; do not assume the largest reduction is best simply because a monitor is close to a wall.
- Recheck after moving the monitors. A placement change can alter what you hear, so reassess the setting from the listening position.
This is a practical listening sequence, not a procedure prescribed by Yamaha. If the bass remains uneven, changing ROOM CONTROL may not address the cause; speaker placement, room treatment, or measurement may also matter.
What does HIGH TRIM do?
HIGH TRIM adjusts the HS8’s high-frequency response by ±2 dB. It is a modest tonal adjustment, separate from ROOM CONTROL’s low-frequency attenuation. Make one change at a time and listen from your working position to determine whether the adjustment suits your setup.

Neither switch is described by Yamaha as an automatic room-calibration system. They alter the monitor’s response, but they do not measure the room or replace acoustic treatment or dedicated room correction.
What the HS8 specifications tell you—and what they do not
Yamaha describes the HS8 as a bi-amplified, two-way bass-reflex nearfield monitor with an 8-inch cone woofer and a 1-inch dome tweeter. Its listed amplification is 75 W for the low-frequency driver plus 45 W for the high-frequency driver, or 120 W total.

| HS8 specification | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency range at -10 dB | 38 Hz–30 kHz | A range stated at -10 dB; it is not a guarantee of in-room bass response. |
| Frequency range at -3 dB | 47 Hz–24 kHz | A separate range stated at -3 dB; keep that tolerance attached to the figure. |
| ROOM CONTROL | 0, -2, or -4 dB below 500 Hz | Selectable low-frequency attenuation. |
| HIGH TRIM | ±2 dB | High-frequency response adjustment. |
| Dimensions (W × H × D) | 250 × 390 × 334 mm | Cabinet dimensions for checking physical fit. |
| Weight | 10.2 kg | Useful when planning placement and support. |
These are Yamaha’s published specifications, accessed in 2026. Frequency-response ranges describe the stated measurement tolerance; they do not say how the monitor will perform in a particular room or establish a suitable ROOM CONTROL position.
Does ROOM CONTROL fix room acoustics?
No. It changes the HS8’s low-frequency response, but it does not assess the room or correct every effect caused by its dimensions, surfaces, or speaker placement. Yamaha presents ROOM CONTROL as a way to attenuate exaggerated low end that can occur near walls, not as a substitute for measurement or acoustic treatment.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If bass varies substantially between listening positions, or remains uneven after you try the switch, the control alone may not solve the problem. Treating the setting as one part of setup—not a complete room fix—keeps its purpose and limits clear.

Do you need the HS8S subwoofer?
No. The HS8S is a separate, optional powered subwoofer, not a required component of the HS8. Yamaha lists the HS8S with an 8-inch cone, 150 W amplification, and a 22 Hz–160 Hz frequency range at -10 dB. It also has level, phase, high-cut, and low-cut controls. Those specifications do not establish how well a subwoofer will integrate in any particular room; adding one does not remove the need to assess placement and listening balance.

When another HS-series monitor may fit better
Woofer size and published low-frequency range can help compare models, but they do not establish that one is universally better. Consider the room, intended listening distance, cabinet fit, and the kind of low-frequency reach you need.
| Model | Woofer | Published frequency range |
|---|---|---|
| HS5 | 5-inch | 54 Hz–30 kHz (-10 dB) |
| HS7 | 6.5-inch | 43 Hz–30 kHz (-10 dB) |
| HS8 | 8-inch | 38 Hz–30 kHz (-10 dB) |
All three ranges in the table are Yamaha’s stated -10 dB figures, accessed in 2026; they should not be read as guaranteed in-room response. The HS8’s larger woofer and lower published -10 dB figure may be relevant if those characteristics suit your space and use, but the specification alone cannot determine which monitor will work best for you.
